Junkers Ju87R-2 (1/72 Scale AF)

Well this will be my first (of many i hope) GB.
The reason i picked the Ju87 dive bomber was well .....to be honest i kind of panic bought it after seeing that my first choice (Flying Fortress) was being chosen by (what seemed like) everyone else.
Didn't want to do the same model as the majority for 2 reasons.
1. Makes the threads a wee bit tedious when they are all the same plane and
2. Didn't want to show my weak and relatively untrained modelling skills in comparison to the experienced modellers roaming around this forum lol.
I will be building this model as a JU87R-2 Italian version. Anyway enough jabber from me.... on with the sprue shots and quick kit review.
The kit is quite honestly very poor in my eyes, raised panel lines, lots of raised and over exaggerated rivets, weak/no cockpit detail and horrible looking mold lines. (teaches me for panic buying a cheap crap model for a GB

)
My Plan
- Remove all raised details, re-scribe the entire plane to blueprints i have managed to source.
- Scratch build some cockpit detail.
- Try to not screw this up too badly as i have never done any of the things above before.
- Enjoy the build

Good luck dude, look forward to seeing how you tackle the raised sections of the aircraft. Remember, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger...

I'll be watching this one, too. I love the Ju87 and hope to build the one I have (that I've had for many years!) some day.

This sounds like it will be a challenging build. I hope it goes well.

ok so finally made a start on this build. First step was to build the cockpit and see what was missing.
A few reference pictures and some sprue/wire cutting later I have added more detail to the gunner side of the cockpit which was easily the blankest part of this plane.
a couple of junction boxes and some cable/pipes have made it a little more interesting to look at from the view when assembled in the fuselage. I have also done this to the pilot side along with an attempt of a seat belt using cut down masking.
Next i started to sand the fuselage down to remove the raised detail ready for marking and scribing. Top half is normal, bottom is my sanded down version. The plastic on this model is relatively thick so provides and excellent base for sanding down and scribing without compromising its integrity.
Next steps are to sand the rest of the plane while waiting for some extra kit to arrive that i have ordered to help with this project. More pictures to come.

Nice start
The extra detail will really help spruce up the tub.

Got a little carried away scratch building and made more cockpit. Should hopefully look better and blend in when painted.

I have been reading some really interesting stuff lately in regards to the "stuka".
My next post I will definitely be adding a little history about this plane, in particular its attack tactics.
Not really been able to give the project much attention but I have been toying with scribing the new panel lines, very hard not to make them too thick on a 1/72 but still keep the lines nice a clean.
Let me know what you think.

I was also very worried about it but it's definitely worth trying as it's very rewarding,
I'm hoping it all pulls together nicely with the painting. The way I see it, a little patience and practise then you have a truly unique model

Fair enough!

I was thinking about doing it for my build, but chickened out...keep it up!!

Looking good Raptor. I like seeing these kinds of kits (cheaper, its what I like to buy) evolve with a little extra work.

As promised a few facts about the Stuka that I found interested and you may or may not already have known.
The Junkers Ju 87 (or Stuka) from the word
Sturz
kampfflugzeug, meaning "dive bomber", was a two-man German dive bomber and ground-attack aircraft.
Due to the attack pattern used by the Stuka is was designed to include several innovative features, including automatic pull-up dive brakes under both wings to ensure that the aircraft recovered from its attack dive even if the pilot blacked out from the high acceleration.
Update on Build
Painted, detailed and dry brushed the cockpit. Just need to add a few finishing touches and will start on the fuselage build.

Update
Well just a quick update, unfortunately work is taking up so much of my time as of late and I have a week long course next week, so there is literally not enough time before the end of this GB to finish this build.
Perhaps if I had realised the gargantuan task of making the truly dogturd kit anything halfway descent, I may have bought another model for a quicker GB project...live and learn
I will however be doing my best to finish this but I will not compromise the integrity and detail of what I set out to achieve for speed.
Anyway here is the masked canopy that I have been working on for the past 3 nights when I have had time (a fair few solid hours).....
....and I am SO GLAD its done, this was the worse canopy I have ever seen for masking as there is literally no raised edges only a scored out pattern which you have to individually cut the masking to fit. I tried 100 different ways first but this unfortunately was the only way that seemed to work.
Until next time, peace out

I take it back this GB finishes a month later then I thought it did. Maybe I will get finished on time.

Let's hope I have will only find out at the very end of the model.
