I always said I'd never do anything bigger than 1/72 and I'm not much of a spitfire fan but.......

When a shop owner walks you to his kit section and tells you to pick something for free It would be rude to say no, so....
I will post an inbox review soon but for now Ill say it is a revell repop of the 2012 special hobby kit. There is some lovley detail on it.

First things fors, study the destructions and annotate with colours so I won't have to keep looking what 'K' or 'N' mean.
And on with my first 1/48 cockpit.

Can't wait to see more of this build as I've been looking at the kit for ages and can't find many reviews or build logs on the internet.

On the plus side, I decided to do the cockpit walls and wheel wells.
So far it is a beautiful kit to put together, only let down a little by Revell's rather vauge destructions.

Ooo nice kit mate, can't beat a bit of Navy flying. Looking forward to your review....

I made a 50/50 mix of green chromate and white for the interior
Difficult to see in this picture but the insides of the oleo bays are the same green.
As well as the main gear And tail wheel doors, cockpit door, canopy frame and cockpit sub assemblies.
Once I have done the detail painting I wqas toying with the idea of belts and a few extra wires but in that this build is not for me.......I'm not sure.

great colors - very interested in the Seafire, and other WW2 FAA aircraft - keep going!

Thanks, strqngely spit/seafires have never really interested me, neither has the FAA but this is one of those kits I could just sit and build until 5 in the morning.

im about to start an Airfix 1/72 Vought Corsair FAA version - might use the same color scheme on the internals as you have, will have to check if thats right...

what paints did you use to mix it if i may ask?

I have never been a stickler for colour accuracy but this is a 50/50 Vallejo model air Green Zinc Chrome/White mix.

I gave the internals a dark green wash and then painted the details and seat and home made seatbelt. I then added the instrument panel decal but I did not like the look of it. I decided to remove it and paint it myself.
It is not the neatest job but I think (and it is my opinion that matters to me) it looks better than the decal option.
then I placed them and attached the wire from my home made Sutton harness to the rear of the glazed area.
now to sel it up and get on with the main construction.

Your right mate the instrument panel looks loads better than the decal. The rest looks great to buddy how you finding 1:48?

I do not want to admit that I am really enjoying it.

Looking good so far, the cockpit looks cool, you've made a good choice with the colour.

Well the fuselage halves were put together and the wings put on
The fit was not good at all. Even though the cockpit/canopy edges fit with no issues, it was clear to see all down the nose of the aircraft that things just didn't line up. by the very front of the fuselage it was about 1/2mm out. that might sound a little rivet countery but it is quite a step when there are panel lines and access hatches to line up.

This meant twisting the fuselage straight until the mr cement had done its job, a truly herculean effort on my part

There was still a fair amount of filler needed. even with the same amount of effort on the wing roots there were still some hefty steps to fill with squadron white
The (I think carburetor) air scoop comes in two halves that are not very neat (this seems to be the messiest part of the model so far
so some filler was even needed on this as well

there are no locating pins, recesses or slots for the placement of it, just a vague panel line to match it up to
Next on to the empennage, the arrestor hook on a Seafire XV in incorporated into the vertical stabilizer and does not move with the rudder which I placed at an angle to give a little interest.
Here though, the join between the horizontal stabilisers and the vertical is molded so that you cannot get the angle wrong, I think it helps that this version appears to have strengthening around the joint.

The ailerons are separate as well and I decide to put these slightly 'off'
Next to finish the finer sanding where I have scuffed the kit with the course sanding to get the fit correct and addition of the little details, cannons etc.

So...... .......I had a little accident and the 3 piece canopy of the Seafire is now a 4 piece canopy.

The bubble canopy split in two, there are three suitable replacements here though so not too bad.

This little beasty is now assembled and primed. I am hoping to get a better finish on this that I have ever gotten before as I used my Ultimate polishing sticks for the first time.

I must admit to being a bit of a sceptic when it comes to such products and this may make me sound like a Ultimate fanboy but these things are the dogs danglies. The finish on the seam lines and Polishing out a slight over aplication of glue is fantastic.
A forrest of cotton bud sticks. I'll just have to have dirty ears!
Then the underside colour model air 008 blue

One of my works in progress is an ICM spitfire again beautiful detail but a lot of sink marks and poor fit so a lot of test fitting / sanding to knock her into shape. Hopefully get new man cave soon to finish her off. Think Revell and Italeri who have reboxed Special Hobby / MPM kits should have an advisory on the boxes to let the customer know that moulding technologies are ltd run and suitable for more advanced modellers.

You can find out if a revell kitis a re-pop on the net but that might not help you when stood in the shop trying to decide.

As for you ICM spit, come on then! lets see it!

More to keep this thread current than any real progress, here is what has been done.

Basically the undersides have been masked and then oversprayed with the colour underneath (a trick I picked up from chancer) this 'should' I hope limit bleed through, and if there is any bleed through, it is the same colour.

Excellent work! This is a kit I have on my wants list.

Thanks Darren. The kit isn't 'too' bad but I suspect the airfix MK XVI is a better kit.

Am I interpreting this correctly?

1: Spray the underside light blue.
2: Mask off the blue "edge" where you want the topside colour to start.
3: Spray the unmasked area the same colour light blue.
4: Spray the unmasked area in your chosen colour (green, brown etc).

The idea being that if any paint leaks under the masking tape, it will only be the first spray of light blue and will not show. This will also seal any gaps in the tape so the top colour will not then bleed through.

That is the plan. No idea if it either works or is even necessary but I know that masking is one of my failings so I hope it will help.

I had best get on with this one, otherwise I'll be getting a choke point of kits at the start of May.

With that in mind, all the main 3 colours are done and the masking is off.
I'm really pleased with the look of it.

next for the details, exhausts etc...
