Airfix 1/76 BOFORS 40mm and Tractor....A Nigel Wells GB

A Nigel Wells North Africa GB entry build...

Okay so I chose to do a last minute entry into Nige201980's YouTube GB and started a "First" attempt at posting slideshows on YouTube...
Part 1 can be found here.....

I don't really do any YouTube activity except watch you wonderful guys post up etc.... so please be kind..

So as the title suggests this is a tiny little piece again from Airfix, and includes a nice little 4x2 Morris CD/SW with driver and 4 additional figures with the gun.
It seems a very clean moulding apart from the Pin marks on the insides of parts, Drivers canopy, wheel arches etc...
even the flash is fairly sparse. Not bad for a reboxed kit from 1976. :wtf:

This is a very quick build with around 107 parts ...

Image

Image

Image

Clean decals...
Image

A gunner had fell off the sprue but was in the bag loose...
Image

Image

Image

Paint scheme for the 15th light anti-aircraft regiment, 7th Armoured Division, North Africa 1940.
Image

Number 11 blade to open the bag.....
Image

...and we're in and started...
Image

First pieces of the suspension...
Image

Image

Image

Built up......
Image

Next part.....
Image

Image

Teeny tiny parts....
Image

Image

Time to add them to the chassis...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Cab build up time so will need to add a splash of paint...
Image

Image

Image

Driver first coated...
Image

Cab too.... Tank Ochre 1943, not exact but this is on the inside.... outside will be more desert yellowish...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

The eagle-eyed amongst you will have spotted I have painted him short sleeved but he is wearing long sleeves... Shhh ! :shhh:

Cab hood and bonnet pieces can be seen here...
Image

He's in...... though I may have to sand a toe or two off to get the bonnet etc.. to fit nice!! :wall:
Image

Image

Image

Bonnet is on and only needs minimum filling around the front.... Excellent.... :thumb1:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Headlights and crank handle on.....
Image

Image

Image

Image

...and that's it for this post....
Part 2 is up on YouTube for a sneaky look at the built up Morris, or you can wait for the follow up post here...:
Thanks for taking a look guys, drop a comment or sub me on YouTube if you visit please.... I only have 14 subs so far...

As always.....take care and Happy Modelling.. :th:

Sweden is such a peaceloving country.. yet they produce some of the best weapons in the world! An odd combination, that.. :)

Great progress on your little Bofors there... :) :)

Thanks Rob, yeah Sweden built a cracking piece of AA gun.... Airfix didn't do too bad a job replicating with plastic in teeny 1/76 scale either.LOL.. :D
Thanks again dude, more updates soon!!

Okay back again to catch up with part 2 on YouTube.....

Thanks Ben for dropping by buddy...

So where was we??
Continuing to build up the Morris...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Sides are on..... most of this and the passenger compartment are nothing more than canvas and framework. Wouldn't offer much protection against bullets and shells....
Image

Image

Storage boxes on...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Plastic canvas effect parts cleaned up ready for installation.... but first we will sort out that teeny front fender piece..
Image

Image

Image

Image

Not bad??: Time for those canvas bits....
Image

Image

Image

They don't line up very well but that is probably down to my poor squaring up and gluing of the backboard...
Image

Front mudguards and rear stowage boxes next......
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

...and we all done till next time guys...
I will paint up the wheels separately and mask off the cab to preserve the driver and interior..
Next time I will build up the BOFORS and work some little soldier painting, complete with moustaches.... :D

All comments welcome guys.....
Thanks for sticking round till the end..
As always, stay safe, take care and Happy Modelling..... :th:

.....Oh and check your Facebook ISM page.... Ours is the Double L( ModeLLer) not single L (ModeLer).... :shifty:
Thanks again....

Haha Andy, genuinely without knowing you were doing this kit, I also bought it as a last minute entry to Niges GB. I built this kit as a kid, so its partly nostalgic. However how I built this kit with all its tiny parts when I was 12 or so I don't know!

Yours is looking good mate.

:thumb1: So true...Gentleman's scale indeed.....oh and the fact i don't trust myself with anything bigger yet!!
Storage too is at a premium in my house...1 Wife, 3 Kids, 1 on the way and a little Westie dog. There aint much room left for me and my "Crap" as the Wife puts it!!
Amazingly plenty of room for more clothes and kids toys though??:

Yay a build buddy...... mind i am already primed up and awaiting time to waft some Vallejo on.... Oh and you now work and i unfortunately am a lazy assed House Husband doing kids dinners and school runs and house worky stuff now so get bags of ME time to build if needed...
....well i try anyways... its hard work doing the Daddy/Mummy job at home while the Wife plays in Nursery with a few kids for 7Hrs a day...
Then she comes home telling me its been a long tough day???
Oh well.... Looking forward to your take on these teeny pieces mate.
..and yeah, where and how did you find the time and patience as a young teen to build this fiddly Airfix kit??
Big Well Done dude...
Thanks for taking a look guys.....More soon.. :th:

Hey guys, back again with another update to coincide with part 3 of my build on YouTube...

This time its just a quick build up of the gun...
Not many parts but still fairly well detailed at this scale... :thumb1:

I have a few ideas being created for this little kit so stay with me, you will be pleasantly surprised when we finish up!!
Gun time then....
Image

Image

Image

Image

Gonna build her in the deployed position to make use of the supplied figures....and to make the diorama more exciting... :shhh:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Main A.A gun time.....
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Options to build with the loading breach with ammo or with cover on for transit...... Best load it, give the loader guy something to do?
Image

Barrel drilled out...
Image

Image

With Morris...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Seats on and rotating handles and main gun shield.....
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

...and that's the BOFORS gun all built ready..
Next time we will take a look at the gun crew, loader and spotter, but for this post that's it..
Told you it was a short one....( well it is for me!)
Thanks for taking a look, give us a sub if your over on YouTube... I have a couple more video's up for you to take a look at..
Cheers Nigel for all you do for the guys, and good luck with that Chally mate..

Thanks Nige....
Nearly done now just trying to drag the build out for fear of "spamming" my channel with build video's...
Part 4 is ready for upload now so may chuck it up later or tomorrow some time.....
I am saving the diorama build slideshow for next to last as I don't wanna spoil the surprise....
I like it, some may not, but its how I think it would have been.... Like I have seen portrayed in the movies... "The Desert Rats" for instance... Recently re-watched just to put me in the mood when I was building the Matilda II..
Talking of Matilda.... She fits the Dio well too!!
1/76..... Gotta love building diorama's in this scale!!
Thanks again buddy.. :th:

Hi guys Part 4 time....

So this time we are going to sort out some teeny figures and get a grey primer on the Truck and gun..

Right on with the figures...
Faces and hands first with some skintone...
Image

Image

The uniforms will be Khaki with Hemp belts and putties, black boots and some brown/black hair and moustaches where needed.. :thumb1:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Sorry the pictures are so blurry. My camera phone just hates macro/close up photo's. The autofocus is rubbish..:
Grey primer time then....

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

...and that's your lot for this update.... another quick one....:thumb1:
Hopefully next post will be top coating and starting to detail the bits a little..
Thanks for dropping by for a look, and thanks to all you guys looking in over on YouTube, I am eternally grateful for your support.. Thanks..
as always, comments welcome...... take care and Happy Modelling.. :th:

...and Nige, cheers matey, yeah I think you'd said before you was a "Rat" mate...

As for the dio.... Erm....its hard to explain its layout/design... I may send you a sneak preview of the finished build to see what you think... Probably across Facebook PM..
Let's just say I am thinking of naming the build...."Hide and go seek!" As I believe the rats were known for their digging in and hidey hole tactics. :shhh:

Well my guys have gotta hide from Longlance67 Shane's bf110 .... Hahaha.... :D
Thanks again for having a look and for sorting the GB out mate...

Back again guys..... Thanks Connor for dropping by, and Nige, glad you like it mate.... :th:

Right get some paint on time...
Paints used will be Revell Aqua 88 Ochre, thinned and applied over everything... Vallejo model air German grey for the tyres and a mix of Model air Sand and white for the canvas colour...
Just a quick update then.....
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Yeah...... this is quite small..... :wtf:
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Time to glue on the wheels....
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Now the gun barrel is given a quick rub with some ground pencil lead to give it a worn, metal finish.... think it worked quite well to say I just used my fingers and a normal pencil rubbed on sandpaper to create some lead dust...
Image

A small amount of chipping painted in aluminium paint then the shells painted as per some images I had seen on the net of 40mm rounds....
Figures glued in place ready....
Image

Image

Image

Image

...and we will finish there for tonight, don't want to bore you too much...
Next time decals and weathering....but until then, Thanks for taking a look, all comments welcomed and I appreciate you taking the time to do so.... Cheers.. :thumb1:
As always, take care and Happy Modelling guys....

Back again for some decal and weathering...

Now this isn't gonna be pretty, nor is it gonna be clean....
I am going to use a quick and simple method of weathering. Black artists oil paint thinned to a wash with turpentine, then a dusting of black, white and grey chalk pastels fixed and muted down with a Matt Vallejo finish..

First lets add the tiny number of decals supplied for the Truck....
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

There....that was easy.... now to go mad with the wash and pastels......... :eeek:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

....and unfortunately all the other shots of the weathered and finished builds were taken on the diorama, which means you have to wait a little bit longer for the good pictures.... :th:

Next time we build the base and extra little bits needed to dress this up.....
Thanks for dropping by for a look.....
...and as always, take care and Happy Modelling guys.. :thumb2:
:cheers2:

Glad your okay Nige, also glad your keeping busy working mate...
Fingers crossed you get some time this bank holiday weekend buddy....

Right back to this build for the ISM watchers.... and this update is for the diorama base...

And as is customary I will now show some pictures and write a few pointers as to what I am doing or using... :th:

Starting with a piece of MDF cut to size....
Image

Image

Using some polystyrene I bulked up the base to create a desert landscape...
Image

Image

Image

..and a quick size test...
Image

Edged with cereal box and off cut latt pieces set to allow for some depth to the desert....
Image

Image

To create the desert I use some ready mixed tile grout, old broken pieces of ready mixed filler, and some fine small grain aquarium sand..
Image

Image

Image

....and a desert base!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Vehicle tracks added....
Image

Going back in to apply PVA and water 50/50 mix to fix everything and to allow a little more sand to be added...
Image

Image

Still wet.....
Image

Image

Image

A ball of old roots was dug up and dried ready to create some twisted old near dead trees and foliage.
Some trimmings from a hanging basket liner and some lichen were also used to create the sparse vegetation....
Image

Image

To make a shelter I cut a piece of old tea towel up and ripped and frayed up the edges to simulate a desert type camo screen...
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Paint time, and I use a mix of Vallejo sand, white, grey, Hemp, Revell Ochre 88, and adjust accordingly to get the desired colours...

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Time now for a little scratch building using the salvaged drinks stirrers and some thin copper wire and just a little bit of artistic licence to create some ammo crates ..
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

What gun emplacement?? :shhh:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

...and we will end it there so as not to bore you guys to tears.....

Hope you have enjoyed this little desert diorama build and I have given you some tips and ideas how to build your own 1/76 scale Desert display bases..
Thanks as always for taking the time to have a look.
Comments always welcome..

Last post next time when I add it all together and sort those pesky low flying 110's out! :thumb1:
As always, take care and Happy Modelling ISM'ers.... :th:

wow Andy, that's...that's.... AWESOME!
I love every bit of this dio mate.
Just jumped in this build, but, wow... :eeek:
Love that idea of using a kitchen towel.. Might steal that idea from you.
Just don't tell my wife, for we don't have old towels.. So she might find a towel with a hole in it soon.
"what hole honey, wasn't it there all the time?" lol

Happy modelling buddy :cheers2: :cheers2:

Thanks for taking a look Paul.... At 1/76 its a tad small but being a new tool it went together pretty well.
I think adding a little dio definitely worked with this kit, just lucky it all went well.. Thanks again mate, much appreciated.. :th:

Hahaha... yeah i'm just lucky I save old kitchen towels as rags for when I am decorating, they become old and fray then I hack bits off them for camo netting.. :th: lol...
Don't forget to soak the towel in PVA to stiffen it up a little so it doesn't just sag and lay on the model you wanna cover..
Forgot to mention that bit in my write up...
Thanks again for dropping by for a look matey, much appreciated..
One day I hope to be a good modeller! Until then, I will continue to try and better my builds.. Loads of ideas, just lack the skills....
Just call me "Padawan Andy!!" lol..... :D
Take care buddy, Happy Modelling .. :th:
