Global Scale Modeller

First up, apologies that there are no box or sprue shots, let alone any pics of the build progress. I actually started this model back in June just before joining ISM and hence the WIP starting halfway through. Before joining the forum, I had very little idea of how a model should be built (what makes you think you do now I hear you cry!) and the couple that I had done were literally a case of glueing it all together, paint it as per the call-outs, slap the decals on and it was done. The second model I built was a Tiger 1 early version and my intention was to show the two side-by-side to see if I had improved any.

I decided to bling this one up a bit so bought some Fruil tracks along with the zimmerit kit from Tamiya (again, apologies there's no pics ). The zimmerit kit was the sticker version and I was in two minds as to whether I should use it or not, but in the end decided to take the plunge. It needed a bit of trimming here and there, but on the whole it fitted better than I had first expected. I think the final detail is a bit soft and even adding a wash didn't improve the contrast greatly (maybe I should have made the wash a bit heavier?).

Anywho, here is the tank with its base coat and camo done. I used Mr Hobby Aqueous paint and I really like the deep finish these paints give. My daughter saw it and said, "like the psychedelic tank dad, are you going to paint peace & love on it!". My response was to tell her to peace off! (don't panic, she is 23)

Unfortunately I have only got one pic - could have sworn I took a couple more!



Straight into the next update, as since then I have painted in some details, added the decals and applied a wash and filter. The wash was a diluted mix of burnt umber oil and the filter was Tri-tone camo from MIG.








The wash and filter is starting to tone done the camo a bit, but there's still more to do. The next update should follow quite quick as I have already done the next stage.

I did say the next update would be pretty quick!

I used a light layer of Tamiya buff to dull down the colours even further and hopefully tie it altogether a bit better. The tracks were dry-brushed with Mr Hobby stainless to pick out the high points etc. The exhausts were painted with Vallejo Model Colour dark rust and light rust and then some MIG ochre rust pigment was added. I started to add some chipping with Mr Hobby metal black, but I wanted to keep it really light, so decided to stop and go back to it later.









It was when I was reviewing this last load of photos that I noticed my glaring error (no, the really glaring error, not all those other ones!!) - I haven't put on the cupola hatch!!! Not quite sure how I missed that, but easily rectified!

I'm a bit stuck now as I don't want to do too much more to this one, but feel it needs something else - so any suggestions will be greatly received.

That's a nice looking Tiger. Probably my favourite tank of all time. How about some dust pigments around the running gear?

I too reckon some dried mud/dust on the tracks and running gear.

Couldn't agree more, the running gear definitely needs some more work - plus it still looks too "clean" to me.

Still, weekend coming up, so should get it finished!

Looks really nice mate. The camo is lovely. Careful now, as the thought of "I like it how it is but feel it needs something else" can be a recipe for doing too much and ruining it.

So just take care is all!

Thanks Gav and you couldn't be more right - less is more. I'm probably going to leave it for a few days and then go back to it.

If you're planning a wee vignette Alex then I'd suggest a bit of placement weathering to marry it to the base. But if she's to be a stand alone display then just go with the static weathering as Gav and Paul suggest. Just take some earth tone pastels to the tracks and wheels, then around all the lower areas. You can fix it with some x20a if you like. If you have some of those over the counter powders you can use those too.
Like Gav said a wee bit goes a long way.

Thanks Mike, appreciate the kinds words and really appreciate the advice.You're all defo right about adding some dirt effects to the running gear etc., but I've been a bit worried about overdoing it and hence leaving it for a bit. Love these big cats and this is only the second one I've done, so wanted to try and do a half-decent job on it.

Start small Alex. Practice on the bottom or the back of the wheels first. Get a feel for how the product works first. It will help build your confidence.
Dragon kitties are expensive... some are priced off the charts because of collector but heads.
There are a couple that are affordable though.

Thanks Mike, I picked up that advice from one of your vids when I first joined the forum and it's probably been one of the best bits of advice that I've picked up. Kinda reminds me of the old wise story of the old bull and the young heffer - not heard it??, well here goes.

A young heffer and an old bull are walking along the top field one day when they notice a herd of cows in the next field. The heffer turns to the old bull and says, "hey, how about we run down to the next field and impregnate a couple of them cows!". The old bull turns to the young heffer and says, "nah..........lets walk down there slowly and impregnate them all!!!!"

...or the milkmaid who remarks to the farmer that 'this ones always the first in the queue for milking each morning' to which the farmer replies 'yes, never did have a smarter bull'

The other night I noticed that I had missed off a load of the tools as well - was wondering what those holes in the upper hull were for!!
