Revell 1:48 Chinook HC MK1

Post by Neils »

Kinda a shelf of doom project. My son brought this with some birthday money a few years ago, and started it before as he put it 'running out of bother'

It was my first attempt at a helicopter, so I'm pretty pleased the way it turned out. It also gave me a chance to practice some new technics(using white-tac worms for camouflage, trying to improve my canopy masking and practicing filling and sanding)

The kit itself wasn't bad. loads of little fiddly aerials, winglets and sensors to keep getting knocked off and fitting the main shell together needed lots of patience and quite a bit of filler. Somehow my canopies went cloudier when spraying future on them. I'm hoping some ammonia will get it off as the effect is quite bad. It's odd that brushing it on it goes clear, but via the airbrush it doesn't. Since I'm using an old Chinese knock off for doing it I suspect it's brush that's somehow spraying contaminants even after 3 days sitting in IPA. Anyway, got some spare clear parts so going to test on that.

Back to the kit. It's huge, nearly as big as my 1:48 A10 and it has a reasonable amount of external detail although it's a shame the interior detail isn't seen very much. It was also my first go with Mr aqueous color paints which I found just as easy to use as Tamiya and having a nice range of colors. So I think these will be my go to paints from now on.

As an introduction to helicopters I enjoyed the challenge, and the best thing about it was presenting it completed to my son who was delighted with the outcome. Esp as he had spent his birthday money on the kit years ago and I know he secretly wanted It made so he can look at his favourite helicopter I hope I did his imagination and expectations proud :)
