Hi ISM modellers,

What glue(s) do you use for adding/gluing your photo etch parts to your models, that is, other than super glue.

You can use pva glue, which gives you much longer time to position the parts, but it's not as strong a bond as ca glue

i use ca glue but the gel type this is much thicker but the parts can be moved longer then with regular ca glue
it is better to use with resin aswell for the same reason

but are you and Paul neighbors? just saw you are both from Wirral

What about gluing PE onto clear parts (Canopies, etc)?
Will Ca not frost it up?

Paul, is that just ordinary PVA/white glue you use?

It's microscale crystal klear, which is just a pva glue really, you could use normal pva too

Thanks Paul. I have some of that so I'll give it a try

For tiny details, try using Future to bond to clear canopies.

I have a hard time with extremely small pe parts. Been doing my first real pe work on a 1/72 morser Karl and I seem to "over" glue the parts. Where I get a glob or mound of ca that endsups covering the tiny part I am adhering and then will look bad when painted. Not sure how to put such tiny amounts of ca on pe. Or at least haven't figured it out yet.

You can buy little kits for applying CA, consisting of a base of plate and an applicator. I just put a bit of cheap masking tape (not wasting expensive Tamiya tape) on the table and put a drop or two of CA on it. I then use toothpicks (cocktail sticks) to pick up glue from the tape and put it on the part(s). When done I pull up the tape and throw it and the pick/stick in the garbage so I don't risk putting something (or myself) into the remaining glue.

Forbes employs the same method that I do....applying with cocktail sticks is accurate getting a small spot at the point you want it. You can even sharpen the end of the stick even more with a blade to reduce the surface area of contact for the glue to stick to.

steve zaloga uses kneadatite epoxy for small pe....more durable and not brittle. That is etch to plastic. :th:

I usually solder larger parts such as fenders it creates a much stronger bond than CA glues and is fine once you get the hang of it :thumb2:

Great advice guys, just what I was looking for. Just about to attempt to glue internal PE to the canopy of my Su-27 Flanker. Fingers crossed :)

Hi there mersey trainz,

For the application of PE I use several different types of glue. I also use soldering it all depends on what and where I'm working on.

watered down PVA, used for large peaces that require some fiddling to get the correct placement.

straight PVA, used for scratch building modern canopy frames and small parts on clear parts.

quick type CA, used for the placement of small PE parts on non clear parts.

Soldering, used for stuff like small ammo boxes, structuralish parts like flaps speedbrakes and some gun barrels. I use this methode simply because of the strength of the bond. It also has a big advantage that it will react with burnishing and blackening agents so that they end result is just awesome.

No it is not exactly the same
But close though
Pva is what we call white glue or knutsel lijm in Dutch
Allthough wood glue or carpenters glue contains a lot of the same substances it is stronger but turns yellow
Pva stays white or turns in to a milky white
Cristal clear from micro scale is a pva aswell but that turns in to a clear layer once it is dry
