1/48 Tornado GR.4?

Post by Gav0909 »

Does any of you fine gentlepersons know if there are any 1/48 scale Tornado GR.4 kits available. I know there is an ADV kit (F.3 in RAF service), and possibly a GR.1 kit, but I am after a GR.4.

Any help appreciated.

Apparently, the forthcoming Revell kit has a modular design , to allow the F3 to be made ,albeit in a later issue..

So is this a new tooling from Revell? Of various Tornado variants in 1/48? Any links to this info?

I've made a couple of Airfix GR4/GR4a's they require a bit fettling to make OOB even more to make them accurate.

The Revell version which is due for imminent release appears to be the pick of the bunch and may be worth waiting for unless you are desperate.

No not desperate, just wondering. As I have a stash of the common modern US jets, and a Eurofighter. Would have been nice to have a 1/48 GR.4 to go with that lot.

Hi Gav.

As a Tornado GR4 fan who lives near RAF Lossiemouth that fly them and also from when I used to build 1/48 a good few years ago I did do some research on kit availability and the general consensus of opinion was the Italeri IDS was the best basis to start from even over the Airfix kit (unless its a new tool one?) apparently the Airfix kit did some things better or more accurately in shape, the Hindenburg tanks maybe? a kit bash basically ... so you might want both kits. There was some good resin available back then for a 1/48 GR4 by Paragon, but the guy who did this has packed it in I think?

I'm out of touch in 1/48 these days, so if there is a new tool 1/48 GR4 Tonka on the cards it might be worth waiting for?

Myself, as a 1/32 convert ... I still want an RAF Tornado GR-4 and the best kit to start from in this scale currently is the Revell one, but it needs a lot of resin and other parts to do a good GR4 conversion, have watched Ebay over the years for the out of production Paragon resin and bought the Relish Resin parts too and have almost all I need now, just the resin air brake bays from another company I think?

Going back to 1/48, make sure good decals are still available in 1/48 (I'm sure they are) there are a lot of great tail fin schemes for GR4's, especially 617 Dambuster ones.

Have a Google (have a look on Ebay too) on 1/48 Tornado GR4's, there should be great builds and advice out there much better than I can give :th:
