Airfix 1:72 Short Stirling (A07002)

Post by Johni044 »

Here's where I'm up to on this build. Remember making it in the 60's when it was new!

Yep Airfix box art made you want to buy the kits and IMHO the CGI art on the new boxes are a return to them iconic times.

Sanded the filler back last night and attached the engines and perspex's. This afternoon applied the first coat of Hu29, and sort of looks awful now.

The second coat tonight should smarten it up a bit.

Had a bit of an issue with the Humbrol Hu29, the paint was very viscus, indeed it looked a bit like sludge and had to be thinned quite heavily to get it to flow easily with a paintbrush. However the thinners were affecting the first coat and lifting it, the second coat was better but still very patchy, I was concerned about the number of coats that were going to be required to get a decent finish.

So I put a layer of Klear over the brown before the 3rd coat and it seemed to work as this was the result.

And today two coats of Hu163 have been applied, now just going to get it masked up to get some black on.

Coming on nicely, how was the build considering the kits age?

It's certainly a kit of it's time, the parts were a bit flashy but nothing excessive and the parts bye and large fitted fine. It's now been gloss varnished, decals applied and mat varnished.
