Diorama style bases

Now my completed collection of models is slowly building and invading every square ft of my home office I'm looking for something more interesting to put them on other than the wood of a cupboard or worktop. What I'm after is say a square of wood etc I can spray to resemble parts of a runway.

Any suggestions on the wood/material to use to resemble Asphalt(was thinking of spraying mr surface 500 on wood) and suitable Asphalt looking paint?

No need to spray , you can use emery cloth, sand paper will also do , if your thinking of modern concrete runways maybe Mr Surfacer with a suitable colour on top, just thought belt sander will give you longer strips to work with, good luck , scale will determine which grade of paper.

ah so you use the sheet of sand/emery paper as the 'runway'? Clever ... Any suggestions as to what grade goes with which scale and how long each marking should be also?
