Global Scale Modeller

Greetings folks.

Like many or most, I recently returned to the hobby having made a few kits as a young boy. I built a few kits out of the box but scratch building sparks my interest.

Growing up in Portugal, before the €uro we had the good old Escudo. The 20 escudo note used to show a Fairey floatplane, flown by Gago Coutinho and Sacadura Cabral on the first southern Atlantic crossing by air.






I am attempting to create that, from this;



(Cheap Russian kit i got on ebay. Too big to be 172)
and when i figure out how to post pics from my phone instead of links I will show and tell ( mostly ask advice I think)

I am already quite a way in to the build. I will try to get these in the right order


The decals i ordered separatly. From a blackburn shark i think.

Not a great kit. Lots of flash and pin marks...

Build started

No cockpit details. Comes with 3 figures which are badly molded.


Fit issues to deal with



The area for the 3 airman and the machine gun will need to be covoured.

Machine gun area covored and filler applied



Primed with tamiya white


3 blade Propeller replaced with a 2 blade



As is plainly visible there are many differences in the kit to whats in the photo. The floaters, engine etc. Ill make it as close as i can.

Painting up some details.

I have moved this to the plane WIP area for you since this is a build log.

Some nice work there, shame about the fit issues though.

Also thanks for your kind words. Its a cheap bad kit but ill do what I can (which isnt much as Im kinda new to the hobby)

Painted a piece of wood blue, dabbing the brush instead of strokes to try to get a non-uniform look.
The edging is just electrical tape. Its not permanent.





Then added some silicone and whacked it with a plastic spoon to lift some waves. First time im doing this so unsure of the results.

Nice job with the conversion so far, and I love the base you're creating. Impressive use of the "Spoon Whacking" technique!

Thank you very much Fishbowl. Spoon whacking is also a great way to unwind after a stressy day at the office.

Building up the water where i want it to go up the sides of the floaters.



The silicone im using is supposed to dry transparent, but its taking days to do so.

Applied a few of the decals just to make it look better.


Had to order a new decal sheet as the fisrt ones disinterate on my fingers...

Well, so far thats where i am, but its gonne be a rainy weekend. Perfect for the hobby

Hi all.
Sorry for being slow progressing this build. Been busy at work and been working on easier builds after work as stress relief. Stressed mind doesnt allow me to enter the frame of mind required for this one. Also just got my first Chopper kit so excited about that...
Anyway, progress so far;

Need higher waves around the plane but want the plane to remain removable so the waves cant actually be attached.
Cut up a plastic cup. Stuck together with electric tape on top of aluminium foil


And cut out




Adjusting fit





And painted



more silicone to cover and fix in place

After drying i applied some colours with the airbrush.


Not sure if i like how it turned out. Might do a bit more white by hand the another layer of silicone over that... does anyone know if you can thin silicone?
