Tamiya 1/48 De Havilland Mossie FB Mk.VI Final Reveal Video!

Hello everybody,

I created my final reveal video last night before getting into bed and it has just gone through on YouTube!

This was my 7th build, was built "out of the box" and I think I've learned a lot from the model making videos presented by Paul and Lee since I started....I mixed my own colors and tried oil paint washes for the first time! They are awesome to use and if there's too much on the model, you can always remove it because it takes a while to dry.

I did pre-shading and post shading with a mix of black and white oils, mixed with a grimy wash by Model Masters, and, for the reddish hues, I used a bit of Humbrol # 70 Brick Red. For the first time also, I used Isopropyl Alcohol for thinning paints down....this stuff is incredible; it makes the paint go on in a nice even and thin covering making things look a little more realistic, well in my eyes it did.

For the Upper Dark Green I used Model Masters 4726 mixed with Flat White and Yellow at a 10:2:1 ratio.
For the Upper Dark Grey, I used Humbrol 106 mixed with Flat white at a 10:3 ratio.
For the Lower Light Grey, I used Humbrol 165 mixed with Flat White at a 10:3 ratio.

When weathering, I created my own dirty wash using a Mix of Isopropyl Alcohol, Model Masters Sand Wash and Model Masters "Light Olive" at a ratio of 20:3:1 brushed over the upper surfaces, allowed to dry, then buffed down to change the overall patina of the upper camo tones, adding a sandy hue to the Upper Dark Green making it look more realistic and life-like to the actual color.

For the gloss varnish, I used Model Masters Gloss clearcote mixed with 20% Model Masters thinners, prior to decaling and weathering. To finish her off, I Air-brushed two coats of Model-Masters Matte/Flat clearcote.

I tried loading images on here after uploading the video to YouTube and when signing into my Flckr account, it took me to Yahoo.com, which thendidn't recognize my sign in details, so, I hit the help me, I'm having trouble signing in and it sent me an email to help me do so. I put in the new password and it took me to someone else's account?!! So, I can't access flckr and upload the images.

I tried Photobucket again, but after uploading the images onto there, I clicked te share link to access the URL codes, but when I do that and click on the URL's nothing happens, it freezes. FRUSTRATING!!!

So, I'm going to try another, the third Photo sharing website, later today. I's only 9.00am here and I just got out of bed. It was 1.15am when I finished the video on YouTube!

Hey, Tim, thanks for looking and commenting, greatly appreciated mate!

You should make a start on yours, you won't regret it, she's a joy to build right out of the box. My only criticism would be that the ailerons and flaps are fixed and they would be nice if they were movable. But, that said, there is the option to cut them out and refit in a down position.

This was my first time using oil paints and Isoproply alcohol to create washes....I was nervous to put a mess all over the plane, but it brushes off easy and you leave on what you feel comfortable with.

I'd love to build this kit again, only the next time, I would buy some after market additions like the resin engine sets, cockpit set and guns, and cut the ailerons / flaps out to position them, to make it even more realistic looking. That would be a large project, but well worth the time.

Hello Martin, thanks for watching and commenting, greatly appreciated! It's my 7th build to date and my favorite now. I used oil paints for the first time to do the subtle weathering shades and was nervous about ruining what I had done up until that point, but, there's no need to worry because if it looks too much, it can be simply rubbed off and then you start again. I'm looking forward to doing my next build now I'm comfortable with the technique!

Glad you liked her...she's my fave now!

I was pleased with the outcome of the mixes and the wash that I put on top to tone/weather the dark green down. I want to make another one now, only next time, I'll buy the resin engine sets, etched brass cockpit details and movable aileron/flaps and rudder to ad more realism to it.
