Academy Da Vinci Catapult

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to share with you this fantastic kit I found by Academy of a catapult based on Da Vinci's own drawings. The kit is excellent for what it is supposed to be. It's fully functional firing and has designed in it easy adjustment for projectile trajectories. I really wasn't expecting this in a kit but I found it. Plus, at about $20 a kit, it's a real fun nice find.



The plastic has this wood finish, that is thick so you don't just scrape off the top layer when sanding/finishing. There are heavy seam lines in the large beams though and the a few injection marks. But I've seen aircraft and tank models with WAY more problems. Detail is of course a bit simple from a traditional standpoint but these are all components of a catapult, not a modern engine, so there wouldn't be that much detail in the first place.

But as you can see, she's beautiful coming together. Instructions are straightforward and the design I think is very nice.



The pin mechanism is wheel done as well as the crankshaft.





For range and trajectory adjustments there are these easy to move knobs. Turn and lift it, move the block under it and then stick the knob back in and turn to seal it.











The last step I need is to complete the accompanying projectiles. I've test-fired her many times with other small objects. Works great and is a lot of fun!

That's pretty cool! The styrene that the parts are molded from is known as "Blown Styrene". A blowing agent of between 1% and 2% is added into the mix when molded. This agent allows for thicker sections to be molded without sink marks appearing, and, gives the outer surface appearance of a grain.
