So same kit as the Gupster, I've got three weeks before the D Day GB and with the F-16 out the way i thought i would build this. Ive wanted to build a 1/48 Me262 for a while having built a hasagawa 1/72 a few years back and this good looks great for the money. :cheers2:

It seems a great kit, fit is very good although some parts are way overcomplicated but it adds to making an enjoyable build :thumb2:

Please ignore the moose boy in the background i was skyping with him when i took these pics lol
Image
Image

Progress is fast i built most of these while doing a google hangout last night with Seb, Stefan, Devon and David :eeek:

Cockpit and fuselage sidewalls ready for paint, like i said progress was fast. The level of detail is good too :thumb2:

Image
ImageImage

Today i assembled the lower wing and landing gear well front assembled, and sanded the engine cowlings ready for some mr surfacer tomorrow.
ImageImage

Everything painted up, i decided to follow the kit colour callouts for the cockpit (RLM 66) and fuselage (RLM 02) as theres various discussion about the actual colours.
The gun bays where also painted with MR Hobby Buffable dark iron seen top right

Image

Once dry i used cotton buds and micro brushes to buff it up.

That gun bay is amazing. Which thinner do you use for the buffable Mr. Hobby, if any? I picked up some recently, but still need to get the correct thinner for it.

Cool buddy,

Seeing yours made me realise I did the cockpit the wrong colour lol.

Thankfully I haven't finished the interior yet.

Are you going to do the paint scheme in the box?

I would like to do the scheme on the box it just looks a little odd to me will see what other schemes I can find, will send you some links if you want.

I had a bit of a disaster with my kit I'll explain later when I post an update

your bad moment wasn't the same as mine i hope
i tried to paint the canopy but it seems that there was mold release stuff on there judging by the pudles of paint
it explains why the tape.wouldn't stick all that well either
good luck finding a nice camo scheme for your build
cheers Mark

My bad moment involved superglue kicker (I used superglue the repair a mark from a slip of the rescriber) when I sprayed the kicker on it reacted with the tamiya glued joint on the top of the fusalage and it all ripped open again, and try as I might I just couldn't get it to glue together properly. So I took extreme measures, ripped the fusalage fully apart, rescued my cockpit and gun bay and went out and bought another kit and used the new fusalage halves and started the process over again.

Never had a problem before and I'll not let kicker near seams ever again lol, it's a shame as the seams were all filled, sanded polished and rescribed. :( ah well round two :thumb2:

Sad to hear of the problems, but great recovery and thanks for sharing your experience; I'll definitely be more cautious with my future use of kicker. I doubt I'd have been as calm as you've appeared to be.

Cheers,

So after the disaster of the ca kicker splitting open my fusalage I got a new kit a after a couple days work I'm back to where I was and even further now.

Ive filled polished, rescribed the fusalage seams, got the upper and lower wings on, the horizontal and vertical stabilisers, the rudder and the front cowling and lower cowlings on too, just need to let the glue dry over night and then I'll polish it all and see what filler is needed and rescribe any lost detail. Again the flexi file touch and flow system has proved invaluable leaving really nice neat glue seams all round. :thumb2:

Image

Image

Also with having another kit I redid the engines as I wasn't totally happy with how the other turned out (I was a little heavy handed when sanding) so this is ready for some mr surfacer and then polishing and again adding any lost detail.

Image.

Again with having spares from to other kit, I've decided to leave one of the gun bay doors lose so I can have one closed and one posed with the hatch arm showing both closed and open positions

I'll glue this in temporally with pva glue and remove once all painted
Image

I need to re spray a little of the mr hobby buffable as some has rubbed of due to handling the model this will be done before buttoning up the cowling. There's also a small step the needs sanding I the front panel.

What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.

Great recovery Paul. :th:

One question; I've read somewhere that on the real plane, all te panellines were filled to make the plane as smooth as possible. Then how come there are panellines in the model?

Well, there could be many reasons. Testing, ferrying etc. They were built all metal and the seams were puttied as protection.
Most often RLM02 was used as primer all over and undercoat. So internals was often RLM02 or bare metal. Or a thin/sloppy coat of 02 where the metal shines through/seen in places. Cockpits most often RLM66 and occasionally some internal parts.
At the end there was no time to paint some, whole or partially, still off they went to service.
As such there are many records of 262s in all stages of paint. Especially encountered by the allies as they advanced. Also with more or less finished camo. It was also common that replaced or repaired parts incl, fuse, wing(s) etc was not painted. (no paint or no time)
Finally the 262s can be found in the most fantastic colors/camos. (they used what they had available)
Alltogether makes the 262 an Amazing subject for us modellers...

Half finished

So all the fuselage is filled, sanded, rescribed etc. Canopy was masked and then it was primed with AK grey primer.

It was then Preshaded

And the underside and side of the fuselage where airbrushed in Mr hobby RLM 66

Thanks Patrick :thumb2:

Done some more work this evening :cheers2:

Got the rlm 75 freehanded on

Image
Image

Then using the colour callout as a guide i made up some plasticard "masks", i didn't want a full hard edge camo so by using the card and raising it up a couple of mm with white tack its given a semi soft edge camo scheme which i like.
Image
Image
ImageImage
ImageImageImage

Still got the rlm 65 black green to do on the tail and nose, then ill fade the paint work and post shade. Plus the mottling and lose the tidy transition from the upper fuselage colours to the rlm76 blue adding a random pattern as its too neat.

Criticisms and opinions are welcome as its the first time I've done splinter camo this way :thumb2:

Looks great Paul
But wich brand of paint did you use ?
I painted my heinkel he-111 with vallejo model air and the black green turned out a lot darker then yours
I do like the camo though
Mig jiminez use templates like that for some camo's and modulation work
It looks like a fast way of working and with good results
Cheers Mark

Mr hobby aqueous, That RLM 65 black green isn't on yet Marc, probably why it doesn't look as dark lol. That's if you meant Rlm 65

As for the templates being fast I wouldn't say that, it took me three hours doing this lol

And 3 hours jeez
Normal masking would have been faster
But Mig does it for a living so it would look bad if it takes him hours
And practice makes perfect

Mammoth masking task on this tonight, for the rlm 65 on the tail and nose and also for the silver engine cowlings. i used mr hobby for the rlm 65 and citadel Mitheril silver for the cowlings.

I also got the mottling done to the side too, using the colour callout as a guide. Ive put a few photos up as I'm not sure I'm happy with the mottling :

Ive removed two of the antenna supports of the nose now so i know where they are lol, ill stick them back on once I'm ready (to not knock them off again ha ha).

Oh and btw that right hand gun bay cover has just been lightly glued in place once complete ill display it open ;)

Next up, panel & paint fading, and post shading.

Very nice painted Paul ! Looking good this build ,

as for the mottling I buy on ebay one template for 1/48 scale from Eduard some weeks ago ...I will have some mottling to do in a Heinkell 219 UhU and in a ME 410 ...I only have done it Freehand in the FW 190 it was more or less ok , but now will try to use this template ...I'm wondering if it will be really usefull or not as I must test it first in some carton , suppose that in round fuselages that doesn't work that well .

Well in your build seems tha tyou doesn't need this templates , it is very nice painted , and this model is great , I like the German WWII camo schemes a lot !

Can I ask what nose weight did you use and where did you put it. I love the Me 262 but I'm afraid to do it because I don't know where to put the nose weight or where to put it. Your doing a fantastic job on it. Good job. Love watching this model come to life.
