tamiya ChallengerII

Post by Ozzie21 »

I decided to rescue my Tamiya Challenger II from the darkness of it's box and see if I can save it from doom as I can't find a Trumpy Challenger II to buy :(
I did find a reasonable picture to use as basis for this tank.

This meets all the parts if you like of the Tamiya Desert Challenger II. Hopefully it will turn out like the picture.

An update on my Challenger 2. I've built this as an out of the box so no PE or workable tracks. God that's awful. I am waiting on a couple of bits to arrive so I can continue with the paint and fix the lights up.

Image
I made the tow cables out of copper wire. Just have to get them to sit right.

Image
I did the lower hull long before I started the upper hull/turret, that's why it has paint.
Image
I did fill the spaces under the turret bustle/stowage with plasticard strips so it wasn't see through.

Image
A little research pays dividends. I removed the overhanging edges on the turret stowage thinking it was just a poor fit problem. Then my Challenger 2 book came  if I paint it no one will notice.

Image
A little filler around the main sight. Still being worked on.
Image
Finally got the two drunk blokes in their proper holes. Looks big even here.

Well that's it so far. Postie just dropped off a parcel but not the one I wanted so I can finish the Challie, need translucent paint to finish the sight and lights lenses and more paint for the upper hull.

At last the time was here for painting. I also assembled a set of AFV club tracks for the Challie as there are no Fruil ones. I just couldn't bring myself to use the kit tracks.

So I gotten some green paint on it at last but it turned out different to the paint I used on the hull. When I did the hull I used Aqueious H65 black green which dried to gloss finish. For the body and turret I use same make but H423 Dark green which dried to flat finish. The only thing I did differently was I used Vajello thinner with the black green and Ultimate thinner with the Dark green. Doesn't say on the bottle if the Black green is gloss or not. Not to worry you most likely won't notice it after the camo goes on and I weather the thing.

It's a big beast and I don't think I'd like to get in it's way. Anyhoo have to airbrush the black camo then do the detail painting then weather for the first time. Then the figures have to be done which will be fun

Looking good Ozzie. I did mine in black green camo but with the extra armour in sand. Was a unique look.

Looking forward to seeing this completed.
