So this will be my next build,

Its the brand new Eduard Bf 109 G6, I have been following the development of this model for a while and as soon
as it was released just had to buy it. As you can see the Box art is pretty impressive. Ive also filmed a YouTube
Video review which I've inserted below, (hopefully)

I buy also this Kit from Eduard , it was sent to me last 06/05 , i'm waiting for it, should arrive next week I believe , I would like to do the 'Ofw. Alfred Surau, 9./JG 3, Bad Wörishofen, September, 1943' version that it is in box , as it is form the same JG from my FW 190 A8/R2 , and this was the fighter that provide the escort for those 'ramming' FW's , I'm thrilled to have this kit as it seems very nice and complete kit .

António, The version I'm planning on doing is the one from JG 50, as it was involved in intercepting Mosquitoes for a while. The kit is very nice and i hope it arrives soon for you, guess i was lucky living in Germany and it not having that far to my house.

Ok first update, and as promised here are the contents of the Kit,

First up is the left and right fuselage parts ,



Then its upper and lower wings,




If your thinking of getting this model, it has great detail all over, and the rivet detail is very well done,
also thankfully the parts count is a lot less than there FW 190s which i think is a bit of a blessing.

Next up is parts 1 & 2, these two spruces contain all the parts necessary to complete the build,
but has a lot marked not for use.





Included is some PE, which is again nicely done, and has a multi part instrument panel that you stick together
which should look good.



The glass parts are crystal clear, unlike my photography some times.



The next parts do not come included but i purchased them as they look great.



Even has the Continental marking and serial number moulded onto the tyre wall



Decals are printed by Cartograph in Italy, The stencil set are from Eduard though.

Now its time to start the build.

Great choice on the scheme, with the white an yellow.

Well after more than a few hours and an Ikea build to contend with, i finally have finished the bits that i wanted to,
and now its on with the first build update.

Starting with labelling of the paints that i will require with the RLM number. I find this makes it easier for me,
than referring to the charts mid build. The keen eyed amongst us will notice a few colors missing,
but don't worry, they are on order.



The interior went together easily enough, but the PE is a lot of effort for not much reward, as when the canopy is on you will not be able to see it. But never mind, its still fun right?

Then its out with the primer and in with the Pre shading, all colors used are from Vallejo. I like spraying
with these as they have a great range and spray well.



In this period of the war, BF 109 cockpits are sprayed RLM 66




Once the RLM 66 was applied it was time to install the last of the PE parts, and the multipart instrument panel,
which incidentally looks very nice.



Next up its time to join the two fuselage sides together, with a little patience and help from some clamps,
all is well.





Once dry you can move onto dealing with the front of the aircraft, time is the key here to insure that a reasonable fit
is achieved and to limit the sander and surfacer work that you might have to conduct later on.

Hi Will,
yes it's a complete new tooled model from Eduard released just the other week.
The detail is very nice indeed, nice panel lines and rivet detail throughout.
It's a speedy build once your over the PE cabin.

So for my next update I'm afraid there are a few problems starting to raise there head, but nothing to serious.

Once the rear of the aircraft is dry, i started on the nose section, using careful application of extra thin,
to get good results. And to help the join along the way, a little Tamiya tape.



After a few minutes all is well in the join department, and its onto fitting of the Cannon insert on top of the nose.




On test fitting of this part, you will find an extremely tight but very rewarding fit.



And applying a little glue from the underside of the part is all that is required to secure this piece.



Next up, its time to cut the lower wing section of the spruce carrier and open the holes that will be required later on
in the build for the external canon pods. For this i found a 0.80 drill bit was an exact fit.





Next is this cheeky little part, No H55 & H56 Caution is advised here, the parts are not a good fit, but with force will
seat in the provided grooves, however this should be avoided as it throws out the alignment of the lower wheel well.
So all that is required is a few passes of a sander and yo will be presented with a nice fit.



when all is well it was out with the Airbrush to start applying a little paint.
The inside of the wheel well is a mixture of RLM 02 and tyre black, on the canvas interior.



Once painted i began to assemble the two wing section complete with parts that make up the wheel wells,
which were held in place by some clamps while they were drying.



Finally it was time to mount the wings to the body of the 109. Test fitting showed a little area under the nose that
required the attention of the sander to get am acceptable join.



Once id committed glue all that required was a little downward force to guarantee a good wing route join.





And then before you know it, you have the model starting to resemble a 109 G6, the picture makes it look as
though the joins are not very good, but in real life they are extremely good.



So far I'm really enjoying this build, and it is going together extremely fast, with not many fit issues that
cannot be overcome with some patience and a sanding stick.

Yeah, my bag as i haven't included a cockpit pic.

But here it is. Eduards cockpit looks great, and is built up with 3 layers of PE no less.

Those Wheels do look very nice...Im also tempted to get the Brassin cockpit...

The wheels are great, and worth the money in my opinion.
The Brassin cockpit is also very well done, but to be honest I was in the same situation and decided on not buying it. The 109 cockpit is quite dark, and not that visible, If I could id replace the cannon pods with the Brassin offerings, but it's to late for me to do that. But if you did add the cockpit it would look stunning!

Ordered the Wheels, and cockpit...
Will go to Town on this one since the 109 is my overall favourite Aircraft and also its a special build with a theme.

Not started my thread yet, will do it later today.
Have however started the Brassin/PE cockpit and have cleaned up the fuse halves.
The Amazing detail on these next gen kits are cool, but I have concluded that no matter how hard you try, its almost impossible to clean up the injection gates without obliteration of detail. And since its so fine, its extremely hard to restore (so it blends with the rest).
Gaps, filler and sanding must be avoided on these kits as much as possible in my opinion since the complex detailing is everywhere.
Spending lots of time on test fitting and then careful gluing is a must. Better to leave a tiny gap here and there. (since real WWII aircraft had gaps everywhere anyway)
Also NOT sand by habit, since fit is extremely exact and tight there are no margins, sanding Before test fitting can create gaps where there were none...
Kits like this really makes you think about how you do stuff...

It looks like You have succeeded well in your build, looking good!

Hi Guys, thanks for all the trouble that you take to support this build, Its taking rather longer than i would of hoped, not because of the model just because of my work load at work.

Patrick you are quite correct in what you say, building this does make you think a lot more, especially around the cannon pods and the installation of the wings to the fuselage. At the end of the build i will be uploading a video onto youtube which should explain how i build a little better, rather than me sat here typing away.

Next on the build list was installing all the various flaps, built up of 8 parts for the whole aircraft



Looks good when finally installed, but will require careful masking to preserve the RLM 02



Next up was to tackle the Spinner and prop, at first look, the parts look nice, but on the reverse side of the prop
there are three nasty sink marks to deal with! you also have to be extremely careful when trimming the spruce gates from the prop.



Sink marks were filled and sanded, took about 20 mins to get a completely flat and acceptable surface.



Once all was in order i decided to prime and paint the parts so they could be returned to the box for safe storage. The parts were mounted on cocktail sticks to aid painting.



Once primed with Vallejo primer, the spinner and prop were painted with Vallejo RLM 70



Then i masked off the spinner for the White marking to be applied. Used Vallejo 71001 White for this process.
The masking took some time to get right but I'm impressed with the way it turned out.



The Canopies are clear with the Eduard kit, but thought a nice future dip would make them stand out even more, and i was right. This is the only time i use future as i do not like spraying it as a gloss goat over the model.


As you can see the results are pretty impressive.

Next up was to begin the masking process, Blue tac for the wheel wells and the small bits of cut out foam for the radiators.


This is a pretty poor picture of the final stage of the main build, before i move onto priming and finally paint.



Well now its onto the painting stage.

ok well this is my first update for a while, as I've said before , unexpected work and holiday commitments bit hard, but here we go.

also the picture quality is not up to normal standards as most are done with the iPhone

finally got the canopy all Masked up to protect it whilst spraying, this job was made easy thanks to Eduards included pre cut masking tape.



Next up was the primer coat, here i used Vallejo Surface Primer 73601, which is grey in colour, i do like this product and find it very easy to use, I'm not one for a rattle can as you tend to not have very good control of the flow. Also the pre shading was added after the primer coat had dried.







Next up was the first application of the camouflage, the first colour used was the RLM 74 from vallejo which is 71054 Dark Grey Blue.

The pictures don't do the painting justice as you can still see elements of the pre shading,


Then it was time to paint the light camouflage which is RLM 75 Vallejo 71052 German Grey,
Tamiya tape was used to achieve the sharp demarkation lines.



After this selected masking was applied so as to achieve the correct coverage and the light blue of RLM 76 Vallejo 71046 Pale Grey Blue was applied, The mottling was a combination of RLM 75 and RLM 74 sprayed free hand, achieved by low air pressure and heavily thinned paint so as not to get lots of splatter.


Also the tail area was masked up so as to spray the White tail, Vallejo 71001 was used for this.



Well i hope you enjoyed reading and looking at this update, and now its on to the detailing of the model and finally finishing her off.

Well, a late night build update is always a treat to write.

Top Tip, don't leave blue tac that you have used to mask with on your model for a long period of time,
As you can see from the following photo, it becomes a Pain in the A..RSE, becoming very powdery and loose.
After digging around with a cocktail stick for around 10 mins i was achieving nothing, but then had a great idea of rubbing fresh White Tac on it to ease it off the inside of my wheel wells. "This worked a treat may i add"

And here are two pics of where we are at the moment with regards to the Decal work. The 109 has not been weathered yet, just a
coat of satin varnish before the Decals were applied.





One thing that i have experienced with this build that i haven't before, more of an observation really is that the Cartograf Decals that are normally very good, are Silvering a lot and not responding well to the normal application of Micro Set & Sol. So I've had to go a stage higher and break out the Mr Hobby , Mr Mark Softer, Normally reserved for the thick Tamiya decals.

I've been following Paul's video building his Airfix version, have you built the Airfix version and how does the Eduard kit compare, I'm guessing that the additional PE that comes with the kit would make them roughly the same price (if you added PE to the Airfix kit)
