F.A.Q. 2 by Mig Jimenez

Hi all,

Just a quick newbie question... I've just started modelling again (last time was about 25 years ago in my teens) and need to learn some proper modelling skills/techniques, particularly around painting/staining, etc.

I've watched the fantastic videos by Paul and Lee and have picked up a great many useful tips though was wondering if there was value in also getting the book, F.A.Q. 2 by Mig Jimenez? From what I have seen it is mostly geared towards tanks and land vehicles, though I would mostly be modelling aircraft and wasn't sure if these techniques would also apply? Also, I wasn't sure as I am only looking at brush painting my models as I currently don't have space for a compressor and for recent health reasons am sticking to the non-toxic acrylics (Vallejo).

it is a great book to have and it contains tons of info
but it is all for afv building though
for planes it should have some value but it is a expensive book
so for planes there could be other books
i think "painting and finishing techniques by Gary Edmundson could be a cheaper alternative and this covers both planes and afv's it is an opsrey book and costs about half of FAQ2
if you just want to build afv kits though then faq is one of the best books you can buy
so i hope.this should get you started

As mark said the FAQ book is great, there are a lot of techniques that can be carried through, but there's lots of other books on aircraft modelling.

Printed 2008 by JM Villaba produced by Andrea Press
Full of techniques used for constructing & painting aircraft
Cannot recall how much it was, hope this helps

I've got FAQ2 and absolutely love. There's pretty much everything in there that you'll need - if you build armour. I really only build AFV's myself, but I'm sure there's lots of techniques that cross over. Bearing in mind that you mentioned you'll be building mostly aircraft and also coupled with the fact that a lot of the products used in the book are enamel based, I would probably advise looking elsewhere. There's some stunning photos in the book though, so if you're looking for some eye-candy, you're not going to be disappointed.

Personally, I've learnt most of my stuff right here on ISM and the good thing is, if you can't find an answer to your question - just ask! There's some fantastic modellers here and everyone is only too glad to pass on help and advice!

Thank you very much to everyone who replied. Really useful tips and information - I will be sure to check out all of the resources and books mentioned. It's what I'm enjoying about my newly found hobby, there is such a wealth of great people, information and skills to learn.
