All in all, looks like a nicely detailed kit, time will tell as far as fit goes.

This is the second ICM kit I've built, and like the last one, this has a numbered parts map.... But the actual parts on the sprues aren't numbered! Lol! Oh well, shouldn't be a problem.

No interior provided, which is a shame, would've been nice to have those big hatches open. Might see if I've got anything I could stuff in there instead.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the builds, I think it'll be a spectacular reveal vid!

Some history and pics

History
The Bergepanther was first developed in 1942-1943 because of the need for a heavy duty tank recovery vehicle. This need came about because for regular tanks such as the Panzer III and Panzer IV, half-tracks such as the SdKfz 9 would be fine for towing duty, but tanks such as the Panther or Tiger were just so heavy that up to three would be required just to tow a single tank. Tigers at the time were also much more valued than Panthers considering that they were produced in fewer numbers so naturally the Panther was the chosen base from which to create the new armored recovery vehicle. These vehicles produced by MAN were subsequently shipped off to serve during the Battle of Kursk and in other battles until the end of the war. Around two to four Bergepanthers were allocated to each tank unit making up for a total of around 330 vehicles produced during the war, mainly by the company Demag.






Even the Brits used them on captured German armour!

I don't know....I'd like to be able to make positive comments, but I just can't get into the armor modeling side of things?! I can appreciate them when they are masterly and skilfully completed and be blown away by the awesome detailing, and have a lot of admiration and respect for the builders...but....show me a plane and I'm drooling!

Cheers dude! horses for courses I guess. Personally I couldn't stick to just one type. After a couple of planes, they do my head in, so I switch to armour. And vice verca. Keeps the juices flowing! Lol!

Saying that, I don't like civvie kits, so I suppose we all have our faves and hates!

Nope never built an ICM model before, this will be my first.

I've done their 1/48 sdkfz 222, that turned out ok, so hopefully this will too!

Cheers dude. There are slight marks on the links, but they're that small that you won't see them. I had to look hard to actually see them!

Hi guys, update one...

First up, suspension. Every arm has a sink mark! So got a lot of filling to do...



Nah! Just kidding! I aren't about to waste my precious time on something you won't see! Lol.

Lower hull completed, no major problems.



And upper hull (mostly) done.





I did have a couple of problems, the front and rear deck panels didn't fit. So I started sanding them down. After test fitting I realised it was the radius of the panel corners that was too big. Rounded them off a bit and in they went. Bit of filler needed where I'd started sanding the edges, but not much.



Also needed to extend the notch on one side of the lower hull to enable a good fit of upper hull.



Thought I'd dry fit the tracks next. Oops! The track links are really brittle. Some of them snapped together fine. I thought 'great, workable tracks, no glue needed!' Then they started exploding on me, bits of plastic all over the place!



Not wanting to lose my rag, I've sacked this set and ordered some AM ones. £31 for friul tracks! Don't think so! Got some trumpeter ones instead.

I had those same fit issues with my Revell Panther D
Front crew compartment top and rear engine cover, none fit.
And the brittle track links

Nothing doing here. Tracks haven't arrived yet! Also, the Mrs has a broken leg so her and the kids are keeping me busy! I'm missing my cave! Lol

Hi guys! Managed to make some progress on this. Tracks arrived at last, and all my DDay entries are done.

So where to start?

Mixed some VMA hull red and dark brown to get a primer kind of color




NOTE! - before you start sticking red hot pokers in your eyes, and screaming 'WTF Chief?!'. I'll be doing this in a winter white wash. To that end I haven't been too careful with the painting, it's only there to have some showing through later. Hope that makes sense, lol!


After a coat of klear, I sprayed some AK worn effect, then a base of dark yellow with red and green cam. After that had dried a little, I used various brushes, tooth picks and the like to chip the paint.



Not sure if I put too much worn effects on, or if the paint needed to dry a little more, but as you can see, it started to peel off, rather than chip off. Not to worry, white wash is still to come! Lol.



Got the wheels and tracks assembled



Sprayed some card black to put under the grills on the rear deck.



On joining upper and lower hulls, I found two quite large gaps that would need filling. I glued some strips of plasticard in to the holes. Once dried they can be trimmed and sanded down.



These two tow bars are stowed on the engine deck, but i want to show it pulling a vehicle. After a bit of fiddling I managed to get them fitted and workable.



Now for the fun bit!



As you can see, the crane is made to be built with the boom sticking out over the left side. I doubt this would be the position when towing vehicles, so a bit of adjustment is required.

Also, the kit part was broken, and had solid chain links.


I started be 'dis assembling' the crane.



Then I drilled holes in the ends of the parts to accept small brass rods. These would act as locating pins for reassembly. I also replaced the plastic chain with a metal one.

Here it is reassembled, with the boom swung into line with the hull.



I didn't want the hook just swinging in the air either, so I made some 'rope' to attach between hook and crane. I'll tidy it up a bit later.



So this is where I'm at right now, main assy completed, (tools and what not will be added later) klear coat on ready for decals.



Busy weekend coming up, and the WW1 GB is starting so might get some more done, might not, lol!

Had the same issue with the drivers hatch, but went a bit over the top trying to fix it.

Made a little more progress on this, not much though!

Gave it a light winter coat, preceded by a layer of worn effects.



After applying a little water I started on the chipping. I didn't want it too heavy, but I made it more prominent on the left side, where the crew would be working most.





Next up was attaching the breakdown kit etc. and painting details.
Followed by a dark brown wash.





And that's where I am for now. More weathering to do next!

Hey fellas! thanks for the kind comments. Finished this a few days ago, only just getting round to posting it though!

You'll have to take this with a punch of salt as I can't really remember which pics go with which step! Lol

If memory serves.....

After the dark brown wash was sealed in, I did some chipping with a small brush and dark grey paint. I don't know how you guys manage it! I just can't get it to look right practice, practice, practice, I suppose!



I think this is showing some streaking...



But this could be as well?!



Streaks were done with enamel washes.

Not sure what I've done here, possibly some highlights with white oils?



Or it could be that I've added some dirt pigments in the nooks and crannies.



And I think this is it finished...

love the weathering - I think winter schemes are one of if not the hardest to do for 1/35 scale

Wow, all that weathering, chipping, staining, highlighting. tonal variations, filters and washes...what a gorgeous mess!
