hi guys
this will be the build thread on my entry for this sig
for this build i have chosen to build a Panther ausf. G late production by cyber hobby
so a it is basicly a dragon kit in a new box and some small differences compared to the regular dragon kit
but i will be adding a great wall hobby infrarot scheinwerfer (night vision device)
i have a few other things but i'm not sure if i will use those

but first a bit of history about the Panther in general
during the campaign in the east in 1941 the German army came across a new tank developed by the Soviets
this tank was the T-34 a 35 tons monster that was far more effective then the German armor at the time
so on the 25th of november the Heereswaffenamt issued contracts to Daimler-Benz and M.A.N. (Machinenfabrik Ausgburg-Nürnberg)
to produce a design for a well armed and well armed medium tank as fast as possible
this vehicle was given the designation VK 3002
VK stands for Vollketten Kraftfahrzeug
specifications for this vehicle where a weight of 30.000 to 35.000 , frontal armor of atleast 60 mm thick and the armor on the side and rear should have been atleast 40mm thick
a other demand was that the armor was to be sloped like the armor of the T-34
also the speed of the vehicle was important the max speed was to be around 55 km per hour and a cruising speed of 40 km per hour
this would mean that it was to be one of the fastest tanks on the battlefield
it would housse a crew of 5 : driver ,radio operator/bow gunner , loader , gunner and commander
the 2 companies came up with entirely different designs
the VK 3002 DB made by Daimler-Benz looked a lot like the T-34 while the VK 3002 MAN was more like the contemporary designs of the Germans
the Daimler had features that where new like the rear mounted drive sprockets and was armed with a 7.5 cm StuK (SturmKanonne) L/48
the MAN version had a hull shape like the T-34 but larger in each direction but the turret was mounted further back but it's most inpressive feature was the gun because this version mounted the 7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70
KwK stands for Kampfwagen Kanonne
this gun was to be used on all regular Panthers
the internal layout of the tank was to be similar to all German tanks and conforms to the rules of the time
a change that was made to the vehicle was the engine after the competion the Heereswaffenamt wanted the V-12 Maybach HL 210 P30 petrol engine
this engine or versions of it would power all the late war tanks like the Panthers ,Tigers and King Tigers
at first Hitler could not decide wich version was better because he wanted the design of DB but the gun from MAN
after a while MAN was asked to make a turret that housed the long barreled gun but that could fit on the DB hull
after some tests though the MAN design had proven itself superior and won the competion
at this point it received the designation Panzer Kampfwagen V or PzKpfw V for short and the WäPrüf designation SonderKraftfahrzeug (SdKfz) 171
and got the unofficial name Panther
the order came for a production number of 250 tanks each month but this was soon changed to 600
so Daimler Benz was contracted to assist in the production
other contractors where
Machinenfabrik Niedersachsen of Hannover (MNH) ,Henschel and Demag

during it's lifetime the Panther design had several inprovements in terms armor, equipment and engine/transmission

but enough information for now

this is the kit i will be building

the gun is a single piece part with a very small seamline

i will go for a other scheme though


the night vision kit
it has 2 full sets so both version can be made


i think i will add these figures but i'm not sure what i will do on presentation
so this can still change


and i will maybe build it as a command vehicle but i want to find the correct turret number first
if i can't find it i will go for a regular vehicle

and that is the end of my intro for this sig

I'll be watching. Looks like a good kit. All the Dragon Panther kits look so crisp. Kind of wish I'd built my Panther with Zimmerit kit for this SiG. Seeing all of you guys build Dragon kits while I hack away at that Tamiya is rough.

I love the figures that come in those black knight kits Mark. They're very dramatic, a lot more than the usual Dragon offerings.
Have you decided which of the two versions of NV gear you'll be using on yours yet?
Are you planning to add zimmerit? It's not necessary for this period, some had it some didn't, but it would look pretty cool

The spruces were the same as in mine. But I didn't get figures. Looks great and great intro.

Yep the dragon panthers are very good indeed

It has been a few years since i build the kit you are building but it looked like i had seen it before the only difference should be the magic tracks and the pe that comes with the kit
The intro is just a start i'm affraid as this time i have a book about the subject so expect more rambling about the Panther

Yes the figures are pretty good and i have most of them by now as the only one missing comes with the stug III kit but the commander with bino's is in every box
As for the nv i think i will use the one without the mg because i think that goes with the uhu half track but i'm not sure
And finally the zimmerit , uuuuhh i don't know i haven't thought about it
I.think i might get a zimmerit set from atak for this because when i look at my Panthers that are already build i see that.none of the has it so that would be cool indeed
I won't be making it myself though as i lack the petiance for it and the atak set is not that expensive and easy to use altough it is resin
But if so i will wait a bit because i will go to a small modelshow in a few weeks and they offer better prizes then the webshops do
But first i would have to look for the set and see what comes with it so i won't have to remove stuff
So i.think it will have zimmerit

Well not really an update but anyways
This build is already on hold even before i finished step 1
Thanks to mr. Coen who came with the idea of zimmerit
And none of my Panthers that i build in the past have zimmerit
So this one will have it
And i ordered the eduard set so with a bit of luck it arrives in the next couple of days and then i will continue this build

I won't be making it though
But it will be the first time i use eduard zimmerit
Normally i would go for atak wich is thin resin and bends with little effort
The only thing to watch out for is that you have to remove all surface detail that will be covered by the zimmerit but some stuff has small openings for them wich can be cleaned fast and easy
So we'll see how it goes

I may add zimm to mine as well, and I may use the Atak set. It will add contrast for the materials used for all these builds.
It will be cool to see all the end results and see which zimm kit adds the more believable detail.
I haven't used either so it should be interesting.

I looked at the eduard set and it looks good but it has to be painted first to see how good it really is
But the order is placed so i hope i will get before the weekend

I got scared of my PE zimmerit set for the Tamiya Panther. The bow machine gun part looked like it would require quite a lot of tweaking with putty.

Maybe if you cut some lines in it you can fold it around the part
But i think i will add the zimmerit to the kit parts before i glue them together
But i will see when i get

nice looking kit , funny thing i was watching q .d. c. build that kit on you tube the other day it looked like it went together good . hope you decided to use the figures they look great

As for the figures i still have too decide the setting of it all
If i do a dio i could go for the tank with number 211 that was present in the Berlin
But then these figure won't fit in the story

hello my fellow modellers
so i finally made a start on my entry for this sig
as my zimmerit set had arrived
this was a bit of a dissapointment really because the set only has a part for the standard rounded gun mantlet
and i want the late version with the added block on the lower half to keep enemy rounds from bounching downward into the hull roof and thus killing the crew inside
but i will get back to that later on in this update
first i have a bit more information about the panther

the first version to see action was the ausf. d
this version can easely be identified by looking at it's upper glacis plate (front)
this version had the so called mail slot on the right hand side wich could be opened and the bow mg could be pushed forward so the radio operator could use it
the preformance however was not all that good
because the development was rushed a lot of parts where not fully tested and by the time this tank came in to service during the battle of Kursk a lot of problems became apperant
things that i found include : bad suspension , the torsion bars snapped under the weight of the tank being used cross country
engine problems , it would stall with out warning
but the panther had preformed decend in it's first battle where it was sayed to have a 4 to 1 kill ratio ( a bit hard to confirm with all those tanks around , but the book i have on the panther states that these numbers where claimed)
not that long after the battle the panther was upgraded with the arrival of the ausf. A
but i will get to that version the next time
there where several vehicles that where based on the panther ausf D and here are some of them


a regular ausf. D with the mail slot opened on the left side of the photo the bigger opening is the drivers vision port

this was to have better protection when on it's own in the field


and now for the kit
STEP 1

wheels yeah i'll do those later when i need them


i did make the cooling fans


STEP 2

as with all recent panther g kits by dragon it has a complete suspension
wich allows for independant movement of the wheels


swing arms in place
i didn't bother to sand down all the edges of the torsionbars as these will be hidden once the hull is done

STEP 3

just the cooling units where placed


STEP 4

the back plate


as i have this zimmerit set it is inportant that the zimmerit is placed first


styrene parts are added


STEP 5

placing the back plate


stowage bins with the added zimmerit


completed back plate


step 5 is done

i then whent on to place all the zimmerit on the hull parts but i'm not yet done as i need to make some zimmerit with putty
once that is done i will make a new update

Way to much spare time
but i don't consider this a big build maybe when i decide to do a dio
The zimmerit worked great on most places
The ball mount and the mantlet need putty to make additional zimmerit
So that will be a blast
But it is in the vertical type so that is a nice look
I don't have any build that has this
But this is all the pe for this build as there is no other in the kit
I'm planning to do some more work on the D-Day build though , before i will get back to this
Once i have the interiors of the maultier done i can build the cab and the back compartment and mask them up before i will start painting them and when the paint is drying i will have time to do some work on this
And hopefully have it painted before i start on the figures for both builds
Get a little assembly line going

Mark just to clarify something. That picture you put of the Panther on the rail carriage with the PzIV turret wasn't a bergepanther. That was a one off Panther which was used by the 653 Sch.PzJag.Abt I believe. They were mainly equipped with Ferdinands (later Elefants) and Jagdtigers. But their HQ company had a Tiger P chassis with a Tiger 1 turret on it, as well as several other "odd vehicles". One being a T34 chassis with a quad flak gun on it, and a Panther with a twin flak gun on it. As well as the one with the PzIV turret. This was also fixed and couldn't rotate.

Looks like a brilliant start, watching with interest!

the kit is not that hard to build
But i have a problem with the zimmerit
All the indication points are covered and there are no holes for them
So the fenders and tools will be a bit of an eye balling job and i will glue them in place in the roughly right place
But a update will come soon

so a new update for this build
i kind of got the mojo going and the kit is basicly build
there are the night vision scopes and the antenna's that need building but the kit itself is about completed

OOHH GAV0909 you where completely right about the panther with the panzer IV turret
it seems i used a bad source for it as i later found some really bad mistakes about the things i do know

but again before we go to the pictures some more history
this time about the Ausf. A

after the Ausf. D late production was discontinued the new version came into production
this version was known as the Ausf. A wich was a bit unexpected as the most lgical would be the Ausf. E (wich never was used)
but for some reason the Heereswaffenamt decided to go with this name
the Ausf. A first appeared in August 1943 and was build by four companies : MAN,Daimler-Benz,Henschel ans MNH
wich are the same companies that made the Ausf. D
these factories made about 2000 of these Panthers before it was upgraded to the Ausf. G
the basic components remained the same but there where several smaller changes
one of the most inportant was the change of the engine
where the Ausf. D early and some late production tanks had the Maybach HL210 P30 with a capacity of 21.350cc
the new Panthers would have the new and inproved Maybach HL230 P30 this had a capacity of 23.880cc and raised the horsepower to 700 bhp
the engine had 4 carburettors and 2 magneto ignitions to keep it going
these engines where cooled with a 70/30 mix of gycol and water to keep it from freezing altough this didn't always help on the eastern front

the massive engine before it was dropped in the Panther

one thing is to be noted though
these maybachs also powered the 70+ ton King Tiger and a version of this engine was used in the Tiger so they where widely used during the last years of the war

other changes that where made to the Ausf. A where the gun muzzle wich had chamber in the earl Panthers but from the Ausf. A onwards had a double chamber to further reduce recoil
the other big changes where the removal of the loading ports on the side of the turret and the new comanders cupola
the same design also found its way the both the Tiger and King Tiger
the armor was increased aswell so the overall weight increased aswell
also the dimensions where a bit bigger due to the thicker armor
smaller changes where made aswell like the new track design wich by now incorperated ice cleats

although the Ausf. A was further developed and lead to the Ausf. G that made it's appearance in March of 1944 the Ausf. A remained in production untill the end of the war
so next time i will bother you with the Ausf. G

and now for the build
before i started on step 6 i applied all the pe zimmerit

i had some trouble with the gun mantlet as these parts where designed for the rounded type
so a bit od putty will be needed
the same goes for the ball mount on the upper glacis this pe part was to fidely for my taste
the only problem now it that my miliput has dried up (after 5 years) so i will have to get some from the LHS

STEP 6

as with most armor kits you need to do some small things on the inside first


the springs for the htches are to be made seperate from the hull and then installed but i found it is much easier to glue the C shaped parts in plce and then glue the bar on top of them this is less fragile as these parts easely come apart in your hands

i will install this after i made the zimmerit layer on the ouside of the mount

STEP 7

i left off the hatches as i'm not sure about the figures i will use
sorry no progress picture (must have forgotten that one)

STEP 8



i'm not sure if you van see it but i used the back of a brush to slightly bend the screen on the fan
i had found a photo where these mesh screens where bend inwards and i tried to reproduce that effect

STEP 9



all the fans and ventilation parts are in place

STEP 10

this step has some guess work in it
because the pe covers all the indicator hole i had to guess the position of the fender and the tools


the part with the tool on it is a bit too high in this photo
i later removed it and placed it a bit lower

STEP 11



the other side is made aswell
there is one little thing
because of the pe sides the fender are a bit wider then normal but i decided that i will leaves them as they are as this is a bout a 0.3 mm (at max.) difference so if you don't know it is there you will probably mis it

STEP 12

yay the buisness end of the tank


this is how the instructions tell you to make the gun and then later put the mantlet over this
but good people at dragon ,that won't fit as the muzzle is larger then the hole in the mantlet

the inside and back plate of the turret


al glued in place and painted white

STEP 14

i only made the cupola at this stage
i glued the turret pieces together first because i don't want to break off parts in case i would have to use pressure to get the big parts together


these where painted white aswell


after i saw Coen's new video where he was talking about his way of doing the periscopes i was thinking about that and i wanted to try a new way to do them
so i painted them with mr metal aluminium to get the mirror effect on the inside


next i painted them black
i then used a cocktail stick and scraped of the paint on the vision slots
as you can see i need to touch up the black a bit
but there is a metallic sheen in there

STEP 15

this is skipped and was done after step 16

STEP 16



the bare turret shell


with all the bits and pieces glued in place


after that was done i started on the wheels

with it's fre share of sanding ofcourse


here is the tank all build up before i start on the last conversions
and looking at this i see i forgot to make the travel lock for the gun
so i will add that for the next update

and that is this build for now
next time i will show the extra goodies i will use to make this into the night fighting command Panther
i have the antenna set and the night vision kit at the ready so i can start when i have time
and i will pst a color picture of the camo scheme i intend to use for this

It is a rather simple kit And the lack of pe makes for a fast build
The fit is very good so no time is wasted on filling either
And once the last bits of zimmerit are made it will be ready for paint
The night vision decice looks to be a bit harder to make but should not be a big deal or the antenna set
That has a mount for the star antenna but i'm not sure if i will use that as i may make it from a piece of tube
But i will decide on that once i get back to building this

so this is the new update for the panther
there is some change altough not very much as i still have to make some zimmerit
but i have the milliput so i can make those last bits when i have the time
this update will be about the extra stuff i added but it still is not everything but i will add the last stuff once the paint is done as i can get some stowage on there at the end
i did find some friul tracks in my spares box of metal tracks so i will use these for the spare tracks as these are easy to put together and don't require assembly like the 3 part kit tracks

but first the history of the Ausf. G
the G was the last mass produced version of the Panther
it is the most build aswell with 3126 tanks ,being produced from march 1944
the main inprovements are
a wider hull ,due to the thicker armor
armor increased on the sides from 40mm to 50mm
the early production tanks had the same exhausts as the late A version wich where the standard vertical pipes but the left (drivers side) had 2 addition smaller exhaustpipes
this was for cooling as it would allow more hot air to leave the engine bay
the late production of the Ausf.G had some more inprovements but the most noticable are the added chin on the gunmantlet and the raised fan on the engine deck
the chin was added on the lower side of the mantlet as this made the incoming round bounce up or away from the vehicle instead of down and into the hull roof ,this had happend in the past with other version and it would destroy the tank in most cases
the raised fan was added for use in the fall and winter
because the hot air from the engine leaves on the drivers side it was placed on that side
the fan housing had an opening on one side (pinting towards the middle) that channeled the warm air into the crew compartment because the fan would blow the air into the channel
for this they also had 3 covers wich look like 2 slices of pie to cover the top and to guide more air bck into the vehicle
the exhaust where changed aswell but this was done to some early versions aswell
the long pipes where made shorter then before and the bend was slightly increased
this was done so they could place the so called flame damping tubes
these tubes would make them harder to spot by plane when they where moving at night
later on the Germans came with the idea of adding a 90 degree bend tube to them because the original and commonly used version would blow the exhaust gas straigh up and because the often had the added duty of battlefield taxi the soldiers where not very pleased with sitting in these gasses
they where not very common and they where only used at the end of the war
but the German researchers went on with the panther design and the idea was that the Panther would get a new turret along with a new gun this was to be known as the Ausf. F (later often called the Panther II)
there have been a few of these new turrets wich had the name Smallturm (narrow turret)
the first version had the regular 75 l/70 cannon but the plan was to get the mighty and feared 88mm in there
i have found various pieces of information on this subject but it seems no one agrees about the exact version of it as some say it would be the 88 l/56 used in the Tiger tanks and others claim it would have the bigger 88 l/71 wich was used in the King Tiger and Jagd Panther

but here are some pictures of the last used version of the Panther

altough this tank has the late style steel wheels it still has the older mantlet


i just wanted to show this camo scheme as this is one of the hardest for us modellers
the disk camo , it was only used in the final months and found it's way on all kinds of vehicles
but this close up shows how complex it really was


an archieve picture of the Ausf F with the new turret
it still has the regular 75mm gun




during the Ardennes offensive there where a few rare Panthers
it is debated if there where 4 or 7 but they where real never the less
this is the Panther Ausf. G M-10 ersatz (M-10 substitute)
they where build at the MAN factory and where covered with thin metal sheet to make it look like the American M-10 tank destroyer
some changes where made to the regular design likt the removal of the bow gun , commanders cupola and the raised fan on the engine deck
the plan however failed and the American forces where able to find these Panthers without much trouble
it was part of unternemen greif by the greif commando's wich where under the command of Otto Skorzeny
one of the tricks to find these greif commando's was at checkpoints where the where to awnser the question : what is the name of Mickey mousse's sister
because this was a commonly known thing for the Americans but not to the Germans the would awnser it wrong and they would be arrested
they gave the awnser Minnie as that was told to them by there superiors
but we now all know the truth about that thanks to years of tv


and now for the build

i started with the lion roar night vision kit
it is not that hard to build but the lack of indicator pins is a shame


all fitted in place
the clear parts are seperate for now


after i glued the cupola on i added 2 wires 1 on the ir light and 1 to the scope
this is done with 0.2 mm lead wire


i then used 3 scrap pieces of tube to make this
it doesn't look charming but it works
this is the armored tube that was around the star antenna mount
i sanded down the edge of the largest tube as i have seen this on several pictures that the top was thinner then the rest


i then drilled a hole in the turret roof and covered it with a piece of styrene sheet
this is for the antenna that goes on the roof
it is supossed to be recessed but there was no such thing on the kit


here are the antenna's in place making this a command Panther
there are 3 sizes a 1.4 meter with the star on top that is on the back
the 1.6 meter wich is on the turret roof
and the standard 2 meter antenna wich is on it's normal place

this is made with dunkelgelb III wich is actually light yellow
reseda grun and chocolate brown
i'm not sure about the brown though as i find this a bit dark
so i may replace it with tamiy red brown with a bit of buff added to it

I'm painting the vehicles for the D-Day build at the moment
And i have to make a bit of zimmerit on a few places on the panther
I want to do that today but it needs to dry for a day i think
So i think i can start the paintwork this week

I used the white super fine milliput for this
I then pressed a small piece onto the model
Keep in mind to keep your finger tips wet with a some water to keep the putty from sticking to your fingers
I then used a 3mm wide chisel for the lines
Working from the inside outwards so the excess putty can be removed
It is not perfect but i think it looks good enough to keep it like this

Too bad that it was needed
I think the atak would have been better
They have resin replacements for things like the mantlet and the mg mount

Great build up Mark and plenty of material to browse over, i like the way you have overcome some of the problems and the build really is super and im looking forward to seeing some paint on this cat.
