I'm building a 1:48 scale plane and want to simulate rusted exausts. Does anyone have advice on how to better simulate rust other than just a rust coloured paint?

Thanks!

I use 3 different mig pigments on my exhausts
It looks like a complex process but it takes just a few minutes for each step
What i use :
Mig standard rust ,old rust and russian earth pigments
Tamiya thinner
A old brush with a split point or any other non point brush

You will need a pirce of kitchen paper and 3 (disposable) cups best a cup with a cover or lid

1 put a bit of each pigment in a cup
2 put a drop of tamiya thinner in the cups aswell just a little bit as you can always add more
3 mix each of the pigments with the added thinner
The idea is that you will get a chunky paint like mix
Once the 3 colors are mixed the process can begin

1 "paint" the entire exhaust with the russian earth mix
2 randomly apply large patches of the old rust on the exhaust leaving the darker spots clear around the parts where the real thing would be welded
3 applie some of the standard rust spots don't overdo this and in a random pattern
4 as the color of step 3 is very light you need to go back with the color from step 2 to tone it down and blend it

The drying time of each step should take about 1 or 2 minutes (very fast)
As a final step you can use a bit of dark wash on points where parts Of the exhaust connect
If you are not sure about how it works , i have a photos of the process of this in my entry in the D-Day build http://www.intscalemodeller.com/viewtop ... 261&t=6930
It is on the lower half of the first page
I hope it helps
Cheers Mark
