1/72 Red Arrow complete and 1/32 started.

Hi,

Well I completed the 1/72 scale and that got me hooked (for now anyway) so I decided to try building 1/32 scale version and see how I get on. I have got this far after a weeks hard labour, sometimes it feels like I am rushing it but I have to cram it in during my spare time otherwise it will never get done. How long should it take to build? but I suppose that's like asking how long's a piece of string. So far it's been pretty straightforward to build with only a couple of niggling fit issues and the Revell instructions aren't the best for a novice like me. Whilst I waited for the paint, glue, etc to dry I built myself a display stand for the 1/72 so I can stick it on my desk in work and keep me motivated

I will update when I have something substantial completed or if you don't mind I may ask for some assistance when I can't figure something out.

Cheers on the stand, I got the idea after looking at this shot I took at Cosford last month but the meat skewer wasn't long enough to give me the exact up and over but it's close enough. I may experiment spraying the smoke blue and see how that turns out.

HELP! finished the building and started the paint process after leaving primer to dry for a day, I put on the 1st coat of red and that seemed to be fine and left it overnight. I added what I thought would be the final coat today and this is what happened. The model was perfectly clean and I'm spraying in a clean room (not Intel clean but clean enough). It looks like hair but it isn't, any ideas what it is I've done wrong? The paint was Vallejo MA 84 mixed 70/30 with Tamiya X-20A and sprayed at 25psi. I might try seeing If I can smooth it off with a polishing stick but if someone knows what I did wrong then I can prevent it from happening again.

The paint also has a greyish tint to it it places so when viewed at different angles it looks patchy and it is also very rough in parts (highlighted by red) also please forgive my 1st time poor scribing attempt, I guess I best invest in some templates

I believe Vallejo and X-20A aren't friends.
X-20A is basicly IPA and can turn vallejo into goo..
No experience, just what i read somewhere.
Allthough this isen't goo.. this actually is the last layer, chemicly reacting to what it's sprayed on.
So just primer and the red vallejo?

Hi Apple,

I'm using the Vallejo grey primer (which I'm looking to replace with something better as sanding it is impossible). The process I did was primer it, then lightish base coat of red, left it over night and that all looked fine. So I did the exact same mix of paint and thinner and did 2nd full cover coat and it just went to pot in places. I'm sure I read Tamiya thinners was ok with Vallejo or maybe I got it the wrong way round and they actually said steer clear of Tamiya. What would you recommend to thin MA and MC?
I may try and strip it all off and start again or I may just leave it as it is, finish the model off and chalk it up as a lesson learnt. Any suggestions as to how to get it off? I could dunk the plane in some cellulose thinners I'm sure that'll work

Get AK Interactive of Ammo by Mig Jimenez primer.
I made the change and will never go back. I have an almost full 200ml bottle on the desk, and it's going to stay closed.
Just drop the parts in mr muscle oven cleaner and let them soak.
After an hour or so, get an old toothbrush and clean them.

Oh p.s.
Another great primer is Alclad's primer with microfiller.
It's laquer based, and has a lot more bite.
I sprayed aqua's over it without any problems so far.
It does smell and give a headache without a booth and/or mask.

Well I just ordered some Ammo Mig primer

hopefully that's the one but why only 60ml bottles?? I also got some Alclad 2 primer/gloss, some Ultimate thinners (apparently that will work with Vallejo) and a few other bits and bobs. This hobby is getting expensive (must hide receipts from Mrs) but I suppose once you build up your essentials it is just a case of topping up when needed
I doubt I will strip this one down as I dont want to damage the cockpit area but I will touch it up as best I can and use it as a practice model as I have another Hawk to build (without mistakes) and more models on the way

Hi there,

I bought AK 177 White surface primer. I didn't have any luck at all with it. It didn't seem to want to stick to the plastic and pooled up. I thought maybe the plastic was oily so I stripped it down and tried again, same result. I was spraying without thinning. I then sprayed Tamiya XF-2 flat white and it worked perfectly. The AK also clogged the airbrush almost as bad as Valejo. I now have two bottle of expensive primer that doesn't work for me. Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Hi Spike,

It seems like it's hit & miss with these primers, maybe it's a case of problematic batches. Well if the AK primer fails no doubt the Alclad will be sufficient as that should bite into the plastic and adhere well. I haven't had any clogging issue whilst spraying the Vallejo primer, the only thing I don't like about it is the fact that I am unable to sand it whereas others can I will still use the Vallejo primer, I will just make sure that all sanding/prep work is complete beforehand.

Well I solved the primer issue but disaster struck and for the time being I am abandoning this model, as if I don't put some distance between us I will take the hammer to it I'd just started putting on the decals too when it decided to take a nose dive to the floor, it's repairable but I would have to strip it all back if I wanted it seamless again

So I have moved onto a shockingly bad fitting and warped Revell F/A -18C kit, not going to bother filling/sanding/etc on this one but I have used it to practice pre-shading. Although it is all raised detail, gaps, seams every where and I must remember to get in tighter with the brush it actually doesn't look that bad so far. I might post pics of it when completed...... if it looks presentable enough.

No probs Grover, shame I haven't got more up. There will be fit issues especially in the cockpit/nose area, so make sure you cut out the notches it shows the instructions and I think it also helps if you sand about 0.2 - 0.5mm off the sides of the cockpit tub and wheel well bulkheads. You'll see what I mean when you dry fit the parts. Anyway it goes together nicely and you can eliminate all of the seams easily it's that good a fit. The wing roots require a little bit more filler though. Well good luck with your build and welcome back to the hobby
