I started the Airfix Javelin a few weeks ago (with a little trepidation considering the issues a certain person has had with it )

After a couple of evenings things had progressed well:







With no fit issues apart from a little attention to the inlets, it allowed for painting to begin, firstly a couple of brush coats of Hu11 silver with a coat of clear between them.


Then a little masking followed by dark grey Hu164



This was followed by the Hu163 green and as it was brush painted no further masking was needed.

The camo was given a coat of Gloss varnish before for decalling and the seat given a little dry brushing with silver before fitting some belts.

Now the contentious issue of the decals.

Indeed the fin flash is too big, by this amount in my estimation.



which was then trimmed back with a new blade after the decal had dried.



A little touch up will be needed. As has been pointed out there is a protrusion not catered for in the upper roundels, this was catered for by firstly applying the decal lining it upo with the vortex generators forst, then a small cut applied above the protrusion and copious amounts of Revell Decalsoft applied.

So again a little touch up required. As I'm making a 33 Squadron machine (I was born in Co Durham) the squadron fin flash also needs cutting to fit the rudder properly.

All the Squadron and national insignia has been applied but a couple of night applying the stencils will be next.

That's not how it works.
The scale is 1/48 not 1/4

But hey, we all know it's not 1/4 scale

Edit, you were right.

The scales are not random but are based on easy divisions of imperial measuring systems so that 1:48 scale is 1" to 4 feet and 1:72 is 1" to 6 feet. Even numbered scales are similarly based on metric systems.

@Apple- 1/48 scale is sometimes called 'quarter scale'. There used to be a magazine called 'Quarter Scale Modelling Monthly' or something like that. It doesn't really matter either way.

All the decals and stencils are on the Javelin, seats are going to get attention next.

That's a great looking model considering it is hairy brush painted! Looking forward to seeing her finished now

Bit of a disaster with two of the firestreaks, the rattle can spat paint at them so they are in bleach to strip it off and start again.

Done some initial work on the seats with strips of painted Tamiya tape fixed in place and a sliver of cocktail stick applied for the buckle, I’ll get the other one done tonight and give them a coat of mat varnish then paint the buckles etc.

This is far as I’m going with the seats, not perfect but good enough for me.

Airfix 1:48 Gloster Javelin FAW9/9R (A12007)
No.33 Squadron, RAF Middleton St George, County Durham, England, 1962.

My attempt at this great kit, I cannot remember a single part that did not fit exactly where and how it was supposed to. I encountered some small issues with a few of the decals, but nothing insurmountable.

Brush painted with Humbrol enamels and the only thing I added were some ejection seat belts made from coloured Tamiya tape.

I cannot recommend this kit strongly enough and looking forward to getting another in the New Year. Must pull a Sea Vixen out soon to go alongside it.













I know the flaps and airbrake deployment is most likely inaccurate, but I was enjoying building it so much I decided to have everything deployed.

Mate it looks amazing! Something about having the guns in the wings adds something distinctly British to it when every other nation (pretty much) used nose mounted cannons in their jet fighters to avoid having thick wings. Yet the Brits still managed to get a very successful machine out of the Javelin, top stuff I love it mate!
