dragon 1:35 Leopold K5e railway gun

Hello modelling people
This will be the thread on my 1:35 scale Leopold railway gun
I have build this kit about 3 or 4 years ago
Back in the time that i just had my first airbrush (this is the first build painted with an airbrush)
I have painted it and started to weather the big thing
At the time i knew about washes but not even how to use them
I also tried to cover it with dust applied with the ab wich failed
And after i snapped of a few pieces , i was done with the build
A complete loss of mojo had taken place
One of the main reasons was the size of the kit as it is about 95 cm long
The other thing is that i don't have a display cabinet that will fit this thing
So after knowing of this gb for a while i decided that my skills have improved since then and that i would be able to make it look better now
Not that i am a master builder but i should be better then a few years ago

So here is Leo as he looks now

the full view shows it is almost as long as my 3 display cabinets are wide

So now i will soak the whole thing in a big tub of doom filled with water and dasty (a degreaser) as it is painted with tamiya paint and wasn't even primed the paint should come of with out any problems
I leave builds in this solution for a minimum of 4 days but most of the times i leave it for a week or so
The paint should have disolved almost completly by then
After that i will leave it to dry for a while

So in the meantime i will try to get the panther build near the finish line as that has a month left and i have to build the dio by then and finish the figures but they are almost done
So once i have something more to show you guys i will post it here

It needs a cleaning and the it has to dry
Besides that my panther builds needs to be finished this month so almost all building time goes in that build for now altough i am making a lot of progress at the moment

Yep i add water , it takes more time but it will get in all the little places
I don't know about tamiya primer but it will take care of vallejo primer both bottles and spraycan

Hi guys
First of a little sorry for the lack of progress
I have been very busy with both the panther and D-Day builds lately
But i did clean the leopold while working on the other builds

Once it was clean i npticed that it was covered with damages , epm's spruegate leftovers wich all needed repairs and sanding
But it all started with a nice little seamline

This lovely seam runs the lenght of the barrel (43cm) on both sides


but now it looks a lot better


All the broken parts where repaired with the exception of the ladder on the rightside of the carrige
That was damaged beyond repair and i seem to have lost a bunch of parts
And scratch building a new one is beyond my skills
But it will be on the backside of the diorama so out of sight


the engine unit in the back had a few broken pieces but most where easy to glue back into place

Next up will be priming and painting
But i will have to wait untill the weekend for painting as that will take a lot of time thanks to the size of this build

But to give an idea of the size of this kit

both the tiger and leo are in 1:35
So it is big

For the next update i will try to find some info about these massive guns
And ofcourse how i will paint the thing as i want to involve shading into this build wich is sort of a first for me on a armor kit
I have tried it at a few planes but that is all the experiance i have with it

It still had some yellow stains on some places
Mostly where there is texture lile on the barrel
But it is in a nice coat of primer now and drying for my weekend
Too bad that starts a day later then everybody elses

hi guys
so a little update on this build
sorry it has taken a while but i have a other build going on next to this altough that will be used in the diorama for this build
this update won't be about the leopold itself though
it is ready for painting but i want to switch the brand of paint i use (from tmiya to mr hobby)
and i don't have the new paint yet and i don't have enough dark yellow paint left to paint this huge gun

so i will cover the painting of the unpainted railway carrige that i have for this build

so here we go

this is the gondola as i found it in the box
it is fully build but it was not yet painted
i think i forgot about it as i thought it was an unstarted kit


this is not on the gondola but i have done the same to that one
these are the airhoses for the breaking system of German trains


i cut off the styrene airhoses and drilled out the heads on one side
the hoses then where replaced with 1mm thick leadwire
they where glued in place with ca glue as regular modelling won't work on lead


this is why i replaced the airhoses
as the gondola's are connected to the locomotive the hoses should be connected to make the brakes on the gondola's work
the lead wire is flexible enough to make the ends of the hoses touch


the gondola was primed with ammo grey primer
then i used tamiya flat black to get a pre shading
i don't know how much effect this will have as i don't use this technique normally


the first step was a coat of wood color
this is a mix of English uniform and white in a 4:1 ratio ,both vallejo model color paint
this was then thinned with Ultimate thinner to get it thinned for the airbrush
up to this point the preshading is working


the wooden surface was then covered with klear floor wax
and then covered with brown wash by mig productions
i tried to do this very randomly with a thicker coat of wash in some places to get a color variation over the entire floor
once this was dry (24 hours) i brushed on a coat of matt varnish by vallejo


i then brushed on some heavy chipping (chipping fluid) by ak interactive
once that was dry to the touch i sprayed on a coat of tamiya dark green


then i brushed on tapwater and used a toothbrush to chip the green paint and reveal the wood


the finished interior of the gondola

i will do some weathering later on as i want to paint all the components of this project before i start the weatehering stages

i will try to get a new update ready as soon as i can but i can't promise anything as i will start a new project tomorrow
so i hope you like it but by all means let me know wht you think so far

hi guys
so i have done some work on this build and now i think i have enough to show you and make an update of the work so far

this time i have the wr 360 c12 lkomotive
this is a trumpeter kit wich was as far as i can remember a very nice and fun build of an unusual subject
altough only half the size of the huge BR52 steam powered locomotive this little diesel powered machine served the army well
mainly as a aranging loc. at the train stations and depots this locomotive also served with big guns like the K5 railway guns
main rrason for this that it doesn't have the need to build up steam pressure before it can be used
but it never went to far away from it's assigned station as the range was limited comparred the bigger steam powered machines

but here is the overhaul of this 3 year old build


the starting point
altough not all that bad i think i can improve this build in terms of weathering and repair some small damages in the process

i started with the replacement of the airlines for the breaking system but i have showed that already in the previous update


before priming the whole thing over i filled in the windows with humbrol maskol to keep the clean


it was then primed with ammo grey primer and pre shaded with some tamiya black
i'm was not sure if it would work but i decided to give it a try


the locomotive was painted with tamiya light grey
and it turned out the pre shading did not work all that well except in a few places but that is okay


the airhoses where painted with vallejo modelcolor black


the wheels where brush painted with vallejo modelcolor red
this was done this way as the wheels could not be removed without a lot of damage


a shot of the side before i started the chipping

and after
the color used is vallejo model color german camo black brown wich is basicly my prefered chipping color for lighter colors of camo and basecoats


the steps where chipped very heavily in the middle of the steps as that would be the place the crew would place their feet the most


the sides of the wheels that come in contact with the rails where painted with mr metal aluminium and then buffed to make them shiny


the chipping on the steps and walkways where filled with some vallejo gun metal grey to ressemble bare metal


the buffer heads received the same treatment with the black brown and the gunmetal
but this time i only left a little bit of the black brown visible because most rust would scratch off once the buffers hit other buffers


and the so far finished locomotive
it is coated with a coat of floor wax now and is ready for some washes just like the railway gondolas

and that will be the next step as i plan on finishing all the smaller parts of the build first
and once they are done i will restore the leopold and ofcourse show how i do that

but that is all for now

Yes it is a big project but because i use already build kits i save a huge amount of time (and money if i had to buy new kits)
All the subjects where started and except 1 they where painted and finished
The command half track was a new kit but that is build for the non ISM half track sig
But i think i will get to Leo soon as the other parts of the build are almost ready for weathering and that will get messy on the bench with so many builds to weather at once
But it is all for a good cause

hi guys
so it has been a while since i made an update for this build
but tht doesn't mean no work has been done
there is quit a lot work done actually
so i hope you are sitting comfy and here we go


after i repainted the locomotive and painted the railway cars it was time for the flak drilling half track
this is painted with tamiya dark yellow and the camo stripes are painted with tamiya red brown


the aa canons where painted with mr metal dark iron
this is a great color for canons and guns


a better view of the guns


the spare ammo boxes and tool box where chipped using vallejo german camo black brown
this is a good chipping color on a dark yellow base because of the contrast the dark color gives
the exterior was chipped aswell

i used the eduard license plate set for the license plates
they are pre printed photo etch plates just like the zoom cockpit sets for aircraft
it seems i lost a tool but i can't find it no where so i guess a casualty of war


the rear plates


decals are applied
i kind of like the double vehicle numbers
they are supossed to look like a new number was painted over the old one when the vehicle was re-asigned to a other unit


then the weathering started
i used mig productions dark wash for a pin wash on the loc.
i did spill a bit but thanks to the coat of floor wax it can be removed with ease


after a little clean up
the result is a nice and subtile wash around the details


i then used mig productions rust wash on most of the rivets and bolts on the locomotive
this works like any other wash and gives a nice small area of rust around details


then with the help of AK rust streaks i made rust streaking that runs from the various places with chipping
all you need to do is to draw a line downwards from the place you want and let it dry
then use a flat brush and some mineral spirits to make them more subtile and realistic looking
all there is to it is to keep the brush moist with thinner (not soaked) and drag it down the streaks you have made
after a few passes it will give a nice result


i then applied AK engine oil around pivot point on the running gear
this will be reduced a bit later
but it gives the look of grease seaping out the pivots


the oil spots where cleaned up a bit
i also used the rust wash on some nuts and bolts around the running gear


as a last step i added some europe dust pigments to the lower parts of the locomotive

and here is how the finished locomotive looks so far









i think i can add some figures later but i need to collect some first from my stash
so i will get to that later

and now for the weathering of the half track

after a initial pin wash with dark wash (mig prod.) i started the streaking
this is done with streaking grime for dark yellow by AK


after the treatment with the thinner and flat brush


the rust on the muffler is done with pigments mixed with tamiya x20-a thinner
the color is russian earth and is the first layer


the second and third layers are made the same way but then with standard and old rust pigments


a thin last layer of old rust is applied to blend the harsh colors together


the tracks where covered pigments for the mud and dust
the colors are dark and dry mud both by mig prod.


the same pigments where used on the front wheels
i only whiped the side walls of the tyre with my finger as dust and mud would fall off these sides with ease
and whiping them down gives that effect

and then this was done too














and then finally the railway gondola's


due to the rather dark colors used i again used mig productions dark wash for the pin wash
i then started the streaking but this time i went for a lighter color of streaking
this time i went for NATO rain streaking
this is a light dust color wich will be niclely visible on the dark green


i didn't clean off the streaking as much as i did on the other subject of this build
my main reason was that these gondola's where not maintained that much and where often used untill they broke down
so clening was not done either


again some mig prod. rust wash for the nuts and bolts


some more rust wash on the lower parts and the breaking system
it was then finished with europe dust pigments by mig productions

and after the dusting they where finished






and that is how the gondola's look now
i will have some cargo later and they will get some figures to as the gondola's will be used to supply the Leopold
so a few crewmen would make it more intresting
and i plan on making some large tarps to cover the ammo during transport

and i started on painting the Leopold gun itself
but i think this update is big enough and the progress on that paintjob is not so big so i will keep that for next time

i hope you like it so far and that anyone finds the way i work usefull for their own builds
but ofcourse you can let me know what you think about this build so far

It is going to be big indeed
The base i have for it mesures 105x40 cm and that will get pretty filled up
When everything is on there
It was a cover for the central heating that my dad made a few years back but the factory lid was too big so i got the leftover piece wich comes in handy now

Hi Mark, Brilliant work again mate it's really looking the business and what with so many subjects a mega build. Really like the look of those wagons (gondola's) the weathering is spot on in my opinion, looking forward to seeing them loaded up. Your half track is great and again the right amount of weathering. I really do think this is going to be an impressive build, do you have a place to display it once you have finished?

And maybe after some rearangung of cave i move it to the tops of my display cabinets but that depends on the height of them
I'm just a bit curious about the total weight of the dio
I will use foam as a filler but it will still have real sand on top plus the wooden base isn't that light either
Maybe i should put it on the scale first before i put it somewhere

The railway cars are kind of dull when you build them so the weahtering should make them more intresting
There is a difference between the 2 carts though
1 was only build but the other was already finished but poorly
As it was a build from about 4 or 5 years back when i didn't know anything about weathering or proper decalling
So that one has some damages on the decals and the colors where a bit too strong
The one that needed painting and weathering is the one i made the photo's from as i think that looks a bit better
But from a little distance they look pretty much the same

I assume that you've used the Trumpeter kit and was wondering if you've had any problems with the gauges of the wheels on the locomotive compared to the K5? When comparing the Trumpy and Dragon K5 kits, the gauge of the kits is different so if using the Dragon K5 and the tracks provided, does the loco fit the tracks?

Just read through the whole thread. Excellent stuff. The Dragon K5 is next on the bench for me and what you have achieved is very inspiring. I have a question regarding the wr 360 c12 loco. I don't really know of a gauge difference though
I do know that the dragon railway stuff will fit on the trumpeter railroad sets
So the difference can't be that big
I will post a photo later showing the boogie of the Leopold on trumpy tracks and the locomotive on them
But i will be using trumpeter tracks only as i think they are better then the dragon ones , wich i tossed in the bin a few years ago due to poor fit and you would have to use the kit supplied roadbeds wich are ugly
The trumpeter kit supplied and seperate sold kits are easy to build without the roadbeds , this way i can make my own with small stones
But the locomotive won't be pulling the gun in my buildwhen they operated these gun there was a loc. Just like this one at the rear to pull it back into the tunnel for reloading (in Italy as far as i know)
My loc will be pulling the ammo carts on the track next to the gun

They where already build though and that saves a huge amount of time
The next thing for this build is to finish the painting (almost done with the last detailpainting) and then the weathering
Then i will post the new update wich should be around sunday or monday if all goes as planned
And then i will start to gather the figures from my stash of prebuild ones and new ones to get an idea of where this build will go and how it will look in the end
Once there is an update on the figures i will make the diorama it self and a update about that ofcourse
And a final reveal in the end but that will be more then a month from now for sure
But i do have every intension of finishing in time as i already scratched my entry plans for the 6 or more wheels sig to have enough time for this build and my Phantom for the Vietnam gb

hi guys
so here it is , the update on the Leopold gun itself
it has taken me a while but the gun is ready for the diorama
there are still things like figures and maybe some of the big 28cm rounds that can go on there but that will be part of a other updte as i plan on putting more small items on the other parts of the build aswell and that way i can show the different ways i do those things

but before i really start waffling away ,here is the build of the Leopold
Enjoy (hopefully)


well this was basicly the starting point of this entire build
my 3 or 4 year old Dragon Leopold
it was badly painted , damaged and the weathering was awefull
you can even see the decalfilm around the gun's name


but after a good wash with some dasty (degreaser) wich lasted for 2 weeks (soaking) it was clean or something like it as the paint made some permanent stains in the plastic



once it was dry i primed it using "ammo for mig" grey primer
this was followed with a pre shading done with tamiya flat black (xf-2 i think)
for me this is more a experiment as i don't do pre shading on my other builds
not that i think it is bad but i never tried it before


as i want a chipped effect on some places like the wooden beams that make up the walkways on some areas
i started with a mix of English uniform and white from the vallejo modelcolor range in a 4:1 ratio
this gives a nice base color for the wood


same step but close up


i then dry brushed the wooden beams with vallejo modelcolor smoke
this a kind of glaze paint (very thick) and was brushed on with long strokes to get an even effect on the entire beam


in the mean time i applied the other color that needs to be applied before the basecolor
the rust base is a mix of mahogany brown and red (bermillion on the bottle) in about a 6:1 ratio
the darker stains are made with germn camo black brown and where applied with a sponge
all the colors are from the vallejo modelcolor range


the rails for the ammo trolly where painted with mr metal stailess steel and then buffed to get a shiny finish


and this is the result before the base paint
i only did this on the generator box as the main body of the gun will get a sponge chipping later


for the chipping effect i used Humbrol maskol
i did this because for some reason my AK chipping fluid had eaten through the wood paint twice
so as i was losing my patiance after 2 repainting jobs i picked up this bottle from my supply drawer
i applied it with a cocktail stick in pretty thick coats to make it easy to peal off later


i then paited the entire build with tamiya dark yellow
i had ordered some bottles of mr hobby aqueous for it but after seeing the paint i thought it ws a bit dark and i will save it for other builds
so 2 new bottles of tamiya where ordered
in the end it has taken approx. 30 ml of paint (before thinning) to cover this thing inside and out
normally i paint 3 to 5 pieces of armor with that amount depending on the size


i then painted on the large stripes or bands of red brown
i used the tamiya paint for this aswell










all still the same step
i removed the maskol from the wood at this point
and now it is ready for the markings


the markings are Archer dry transfers
i never worked with them before and i think this is a good alternative for decals
altough i only did flat surfaces
they can be tricky though and you will need to take your time with them because once they are on ,they are on
no way of moving them like you can do with a decal


i then started with the chipping
the color i use is the german camo black brown from vallejo and this was applied with a sponge


this was also done to the buffers on the front and rear
but i did this step twice
first with the black brown and then with gunmetal grey (vallejo)
because these guns where hauled by locomotives to their firing position they would bump onto the locomotive due to a delay in the breaking system
this bump causes the paint on the buffers to fall off as this is the point where both vehicles hit eachother
but the left shows the black brown and the right the finished buffer


some bdly painted dails and gauges where painted on the raised details of the generator box
i used vallejo white (base) red , bright green (pressure levels) and black (the pin that point to the given value)


the chipping continued on the front section floor and safety rails
all in places i think the crew would be often


and on the rear ,where there should be more activity so more damaged paint










the results before the wash and streaking effects
i think i have done a better job then a few years ago but it is not here just yet
after this the entire model was coated with a layer of future floorwax
this was not sprayed on though
i find the effect more to my liking when i brush it on
i have read it around here somewhere but i can't remember who had the idea in the first place





i applied mig productions dark wash around all the details and in between the wooden walkways


and this is how it looks after i cleaned the excess wash
i use a number 2 flat brush for the cleaning and let the wash dry for about 30 to 60 minutes before i remove it again
ofcourse you will need the thinner that is for the same kind of products as the wash
so enamel thinner on enamel wash and so on



after the wash it was time for the streaking effects
for this i used streaking effect for dark yellow vehicles by AK interactive
this doesn't show all that well on the red brown but can be seen
i prefer to use just 1 color for this as i don't like the look of 2 different kinds of dirt running down the side
ofcourse rust streaks are an exception as that is different from dirt
and there where a few streaks of rust applied aswell running from chipped areas and from the bases of the safety rails


after some cleaning with AK white spirit and the number 2 flat brush


a better view of the same part


the streaking was also done on the sides of the boogies


the rear boogie
it also shows the pretty messed up ladder but this was the best i could do s the thing was broken and damaged once i cleaned this thing


some streaking on the side of the generator box
i also started the rusting of the exhaust stacks
i only did the pipes because the mufflers and guards are already chipped and i am happy with the way they look
for the rust i mixed a bit of russian earth pigment (mig prod.) with tamiya x-20a and brushed it on the exhaust


i then stippled on some standerd rust pigment in a random way
this is also from mig prod. and mixed with x-20a


to blend the colors i applied a third layer
this is again a mix but this time of x20-a and old rust pigment


with the end in sight i started with dry pigments
for the dusting of the lower parts i used mig prod. vietnam earth
this gives an almost rusty look but this color shows better on the dark yellow base
i used european dust on the other railway subjects but those where painted grey



the places where the crew would be walking around where dusted with mig prod. european dust pigments
this also helps to blend in the various colors of paint and the chipping

and that completes this build up to this point
so now i have a few photo's of this build as a kind of reveal as this is only part of the complete build





















and that is all i have for now
i will be picking a bunch of figures from my stash to use in this diorama
along with the 2 sets of Leopold crew figures
for some reason both dragon and trumpeter forgot it took 10 to 12 men to operate this gun and not 6 or 8
