3D modelling on the Computer

Hi Guys,

At the moment I'm on holiday and not in the position to buy or build models.
So the next best thing is to build a model in 3D! :thumb1:

So I started building a Panzer III in my 3D application: Cinema 4D.
I will be posting the progress here.

Dear Administrators: Would it be a good idea to have a topic dedicated to 3D modeling?
I already made a Schwimmwagen and a Stuart Tank in 3D and we could share the files with each other.

So here is the progress of my Panzer III.
I just started on the hull and the mud guards.

I bet that takes you longer that building it normally too...lol

Yep! ;-)
This way I have to construct every part, instead of just glueing them together.
But it's also fun to do. It doesn't beat the real thing though..

cheers

:th: Yeah great idea I have a thread on 3D Printing/modelling called "Modelling not as we know it". I hope to be adding to it soon. I know it's not traditional modelling but I could see it building (no pun intended) in to a interesting thread :ugeek:

Disaster struck!

I had some serious bad luck with my 3D Panzer. My laptop crashed and corrupted the 3D file!!
I had to start all over again!!
After a day or 2 I picked up the courage to do so. And I'm almost where I was a few days ago.

Will be posting again when I'm beyond that point.

cheers

Ouch! most 3D software will create a backup file in the event of a crash. Try this link http://www.c4dcafe.com/ipb/topic/59163- ... save-file/
Hope it helps!? :th:

Jep. I changed the prefs so that the app creates backups every 5 minutes.
And I'm up to speed again.
And here's the new Panzer III

Still a work in progress....
Lots of details still to add. :ooops: :D

Really nice Han, I don't want to think what Quad/Poly count is going to be! :)

Not bad man. This is what I do for a living. Currently I'm teaching people how to do this actually. So when I get done with work the last thing I want to see is a modeling package. I was working on a tank just for fun a while back that I've posted here before. I work in 3DS Max making video game models by the way. So this is a screen of a high poly Tiger I that is/was to be used to bake down to a low poly game model. The high shown here is I think at 13 million tris or so with the turbosmooths on.

Wow! That is one amazingly well crafted Tiger I!
Very nice!
Could I get the 3ds file? Or is this work property?
I will give you my file but it's not finnished yet. Can give it to you when it's done too.

Well it's not for work, but I've never had any one ask for my file before. If it's for curiosity or learning I wouldn't have a problem with that.

Closer look at how the turret detail is built, with the smooths on anyway.

Very nice Mannloon :th: What texturing/camo are you going for, are you going to incoperate Quixel ndo/dDo mapping? Would be nice to see! :th:

Honestly, if I got around to finishing her and a low poly I might. But as I teach texturing and what we call "advanced surfacing" which is essentially creating a dDo like look by hand, I might just texture her that way. I'm honestly still trying to figure out how to control dDo. nDo is becoming part of my regular workflow in cases where Crazybump doesn't make sense. But man, I haven't had the time to dig in to dDo properly, and if you haven't it's a confusing workflow. Mostly to do with set up and scale of things like chips and grime. My colleague and I are planning to write up a class around it in the fall, so I'm sure I'll get good with it then.

This was to be a Tiger 131 camo though. It's an early Tiger with initial Fiefel filters, so probably DAK. Also DAK stuff looks less offensive somehow to people not in the know.

Was thinking about other types of models I've done that I could show. Most of my stuff is NDA boring stuff anyway. This was from way back when I was in school, it's an environment model for like a screensaver/save the oceans thing Richard Branson had going called "the Blu" which ran in Unity. They gave me the freedom to choose what I wanted so I said the wreck of U-534. The texture is awful, but much like my older scale models, we all start somewhere.

Apparently I like talking about this stuff. So I thought I'd show a few topology shots. I'm curious how you build things hansolo, so here's an example of how I build in Max.

The one on the left is with turbosmooth applied, 2 iterations, isoline display. Which is pretty much how everything I build goes, unless of course it requires 3 iterations if it's like a cylinder or something.
Image

Same here, smoothed on left, unsmoothed on right. These aren't high and low models, this is just smoothed and unsmoothed high. This sprocket piece is actually not how I prefer to model, but for whatever reason I made that huge number of sides on the sprocket teeth. I guess I didn't want to use an array around the wheel for some reason or another.
Image

The bolts and other detail not seen would be added in nDo

Agreed Mannloon, given the medium I work in as you know! the poly/quad constraints put on the LOD even within current game engines is paramount. Got to squeeze every bit/byte out of models and textures alike. I envy the guy's who work in post prod/special effects with little or no constraint who can model at free will
I would be very interested in seeing your results using the Quixel!?

The way I model those details is very simular to what you do. Its called differend though. I start with a cube or other basic form and add lines and polygons. Than I take a hypernerb and put it in there. That is what smooths the surfaces and rounds the edges.

Cheers
