1:35 Dragon Sd.Kfz. 251/22 Aufs D Halftrack DOOM BUILD

Hello everybody! :D
Started a new build today!
Between some GB's and finishing the last bits and bobs on my competition models for the Scale Modelling Challenge this October, I needed another build to keep me busy

So I decided to start this nice model.

Image

It's a big box with a lot of extra goodies! There's even a flexible vinyl driver figure included... :wtf:

Here's sprue mountain:

Image

And this is what I've got so far. The engine is in already and some more bits and bobs.
Im not paying to much attention to the engine and the compartment, for it will not or barley visable.

There is a Photo etch set on it's way from the US, mainly for the Pak 40 gun and the interior.

Image

So a start is made! :thumb2:

Hope to see you next time! :cheers2:

How are you going to do the tracks? Put two links together and glue on the pad or do all the links at once (like magic tracks) and attach the pads afterwards?

Yeah but the tracks should make up for atleast 200 parts
Still the dragon sd.kfz.251 kits have lots of parts ,it doesn't even matter wich version
Have fun building this compact beast

Normally I replace the tracks for white metal tracks from Friul.
This kit has the Dragon magic track suplied, so giving then a try.
Glue the tracks together and make it a upper and lowe part so I can apply them a bit more easy.
if it turn out ti be a compleet disaster I can alway buy som friul tracks later.
:cheers2:

If you are careful with them and don't glue them with tamiya extra thin you can make the tracks workable
I had that with my half tracks

Great looking kit. I love the mobility and firepower solution the Germans came up with. Looking forward to seeing you knock it out of the park.

I loved that too Russ.
WW2 was a mobility war, and some solutions were awesome.
I even saw A pic of a flak 88 mounted onto a captured T-34... :wtf:

Image

And off course they have a kit of that one too... Dragon I believe...

I spent the whole evening just putting the front suspension together... Lots of fiddly parts
But all workable :thumb2:

Nice looking kit dude, :pop:

however although in 1945 the Germans in battle group Kienast did put a 88mm flak on a T 34 the picture itself is a fake, it did happen but the picture is a fake. The original picture shows just a normal captured T 34.

Regardless I do look forward to the build, the Sdkfz 251/22 is one of those vehicles I have always wanted to model.

Good luck :cheers2:

Hello and welcome to another update guys :thumb1:

First, a very fiddly build of the front suspension.
Lots of tiny parts, and it wasn't always clear where to put them or to glue it or not.
But with some patience it did worked out just fine, and all is workable.

Image

Road wheels!

Image

Just dry fitted them on for the picture, I take them off for painting them later.

Image

Now... time to make a start at the first Photo Etch works.
Pimping the dash..

Here's the original dash. I had to cut off all details and sand them smooth to make room for the replacement dash.

Image

And here's the PE dash applied. The meters are a print glued behind the PE dash.

Image

Here's the dash onto the bottom plate.
The pedals and gear shifting box is also applied.

Image

Seats are added...

Image

Image

And that's how far I am now. :thumb2:

I'm enjoying this build so far, although this kit do have tricky parts
Until next time fellas! :cheers2:

Ok.. It's been two weeks after my last post.
Just back from a two week holiday, and I was eager to get back to modelling this kit again.
But when I was sitting at my bench and folding some Photo Etch, It just seems not going that smooth as I wanted to be.
Didn't get the PE stuck right, and could not get some parts to fit. :bash:
Arhhh! So Did a lot of thinking, and decided to quit this build for a while because I do not want to ruin this kit.
So it's going on the shelf for a while, and I'm fine with that. Don't care anymore.

So instead of building this tough kit, I'm going to build a small easy kit out of the box.
Hope to get my mojo back when building it.
Not even sure If i'm competing to the 6 wheels or more SIG either, we will see how it goes by then.

So far this announcement gentleman. :cheers2:

After one year on the shelf of doom after loosing my mojo for this build, I'm going to continue asap.
So stay tuned for a new update somewhere next weekend. :D

A bit later then planned, but.... here's a small update. :th:
It's slow progress, because I'm enjoying my new home and environment so much!
But when I do feel like modelling, I'm working on this build.

Image

Tool clamps added

Image

Image

Door handles and chains

Image

This chain was a PE piece as well, but a real chain looks much better.

Image

The mud flaps were a bad fit, so filler required...

Image

The interior looks real nice with this aber set.

Image

The interior of the upper part

Image

The small chains from the locks of the stowage bins are replaced with real chain as well.
Wheels test fitted.

Image

Upper part test fitted.

Image

And that rounds up this small update.
Next time I will be working on the gun, and the Friul tracks.
When that part is finished, its time to begin priming,

See you next Time!

Thanks Mark! Still slow progress because I am getting tired of this model. But it already stood on the shelf of doom for a year, don't want to put it back there. I'm just taking my time with it. Also i don't feel the urge to sit at the bench at the moment. I began this hobby to relax and de stress, but sitting and working in the garden, enjoying the new home is my relaxation now. So less modelling, taking time and enjoying life right now! :th:

A bit more progress at the 251 halftrack.
Spend a couple of hours building the 7.4 Pak 40 gun.
Very fiddly to put together, but worth it.
Next time I will work on the Photo Etch gun shield. :)

Time to get going on the gun shield.
It's fully made from photo etch, and that's a good thing too because I lost the plastic gun shield during my move.... :wtf:

Image

My trusty "bug" is doing his job

Image

Front and back shield folded

Image

Put together and glued on the small bolts,

Image

Completed after adding some shutters and more bolts.

Image

Dry fitted in place.

Image

Image

A look from the other side...

Image

All test fitted, when I painted the interior, I will glue the upper hull to the lower hull. Painting the gun separably, it will make it easier to mask off the interior again for painting the outside.

Image

And that rounds up this update for now.
Thanks for watching :th:

Haha! Thanks Mark, Who knows, who can resist a tasty piece of polystyrene eh?
I like the full PE gun shield myself, tough to put it together though.
The folding angle had to be spot on. Otherwise it would not fit to the gun itself..
Thanks for paying a visit, much appreciated. :th: :D

Finally done building, and ready to prime.

Image

All primed dark yellow from Vallejo

Image

The interior was painted in Sandy brown RLM 79, so I used RLM 79 from AK.
Went on smooth. :th:

Image

Image

I will weather and detail painting the interior first, before gluing on the upper hull.

Image

The tracks will be done last.

Second stage at the Sd.Kfz 251/22
Heavy chipping and a brown filter added.
The gun is not weathered just yet, I will give the gun a slightly lighter weatering later. I want to give the impression that this was a regular Sd.Kfz 251 for transporting troops to the front, and that the gun was added later.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Sd.Kfz 251/22 halftrack progress
Weathering stage 3.
Paintend the German crosses on and chipped them. I hand painted the crosses to give a painted on look. Often these crosses were painted on in the field by the crew. Added Another brown filter and began with a dark pin wash. Rainmarks applied by oils, need another run when all is dry. Pictures are taken by phone, hope the detailing shows. Rust and rust streaks will be applied the next time. The wheels will be weathered when the metal tracks are constructed and on. I always weater the wheels at the last step when the tracks are on, this to prevent chipping off all hard work.
