Revell 1/48 A-10 Thunderbolt II

Decided to start this, so far it's going together nicely. It has the raised panel details again

so I won't be sanding and filling the seam but I will do the best I can. There are a few fit issues and there is a glaring error in the instructions for the wing wheel wells. I don't like how the wings and the horizontals are attached to the kit as it's a bit fiddly. Oh well, time will tell how it turns out.
Cockpit fit issue.
JNC_5153.jpg
Wheel well painted and weighted. There's a weight behind the piece that drops in too.
JNC_5155.jpg
Wings finished just waiting to go on.

Wings and engines on ready for primer. There is about a 0.5-0.8mm gap where the engines join the fuselage when it gets glued down so that will require filling as well as the wing roots.

Love the A10 too. Had one as a kid that I never got to make. I remember it being difficult then. Keep the posts up. I'll be watching and learning.

Well I got it all put together and managed to get the primer on before my airbrush decided it didn't want to play any more

the nozzle has decided it no longer likes to stay attached to the AB

So until the replacement AB arrives I will paint and decal the weapons. It's Bank Holiday Monday here too so I will have to add an extra day wait to the postage

My problem is I'm too impatient so I will probably find a way to fix the nozzle in PERMANENTLY

Great start so far mate....good luck with the new AB, can't wait to see how it transforms this sweet "Tank Busting" machine!

My brother had that kit when we were kids in the 80's. He never got around to building it; one of the many times he was a total douche to me I ended up smashing it all to hell. I should buy him another one. I built the Tamiya version a while back and remember it going together very nicely without the fit issues you had.

Thanks, I've not decided yet but I might switch paint schemes otherwise I'll end up with a shelf full of grey planes

Lol I think as repentance you should have to build the Revell kit and seeing how well you have done with your MiG you will have no problems making it look good

Well weapons are all done so that's it until AB arrives. I think I have come up with what might be a useful tip for decalling, but if you already know it then oh well. Basically because I was dealing with lots of little decals my water kept going cold and I was getting bored of having to keep getting up and reheating it. So whilst on way to kitchen I noticed the Mrs candle scent burner thing on the fireplace and stole(borrowed until she notices) it, it keeps the water at a perfect 44C - 46C for up to 3hrs
One thing though, I used Krystal clear glue and well it hasn't dried clear, have I used too much and I just have to wait a lot longer than 15mins until it goes clear or should I pop the little caps off and re-apply but use a lot less?

lovely kit. I'm in the process of bringing one back from the dead (shelf of doom GB). Started it 20 years ago, now it's going to be a pain in the a$$ to finish. Did you have any plastic issues , i.e too brittle, didn't sand properly?
Very clean and lovely job on the ordinance. Is that all brush-painted? Are any of those colour bands decals? or is it all paint?
I know what you mean about the grey. I've decided to do the desert camo scheme (tan, khaki, and brown) - what a bad-a$$ looking bird.
Keep up the awesome work!

Good luck with it and I hope it doesn't prove too troublesome for you. I've had no problems with the plastic but I haven't done any sanding apart from removing flash and sprue stubs and just a bit of scraping along the seam line with the edge of the scalpel. Brushed using Tamiya/Vallejo MC and about 6 light coats of Winsor & Newton gloss which is good stuff. The bands are all done with decals. I've found this scheme on the net and have ordered what I hope is the correct colours. I went for Vallejo MC 821, 822, 825, 826 & 912 I couldn't make up my mind with the darker brown so got a few

I might try and AB it instead of the Pledge but it is pretty thick and will require thinning. I will experiment with distilled water/Ultimate thinners/X-20A and see what happens.

I can't wait to see it turn out!! For masking the scheme, I'd recommend silly putty and tape!! (Always seems to work well for me anyways

) Should work nicely on your scale!!
I bet you're on pins and needles in anticipation for your AB!

You're not wrong

but knowing my luck it won't arrive till Thursday seeing as it's a Bank holiday week

I have plenty of tape but what is silly putty, is that the same as plasticine in the UK?

It's a toy goop made by crayola. It's stretchable, moldable, tacky but not so sticky it removes paint. Its really cool stuff!!! I use it to shape out the cammo patterns. Poster tack works as well but, I'm afraid to use it due to rumors of excessive tackiness.

Well looks like it's another item we can't get in the UK

only place I've found it was on eBay and they want silly amounts for postage

would be like £2 for the putty and £11 postage

I've pre-shaded (badly in places, just can't get the hang of the trigger on this new AB) and put down the 1st base coat but I'm on hold until I find a way of masking. It has some complex shapes which weren't going right with tape

OK here is my 1st attempt at camouflaging, it's a lot harder than I thought it would be and this plane is so awkward to paint around the engines. It's nowhere near finished but I will persevere with it. In the end I used a combination of frisket film (forgot I had it) and tape to get the shapes. I'm not 100% happy with the colours as they are nothing like how they appeared on screen when I ordered them, is it just me or is the supposedly beige colour actually green (maybe I need my eyes testing). Depending on how it turns out I will either keep it or blast it with primer and start again

Thanks, but the picture of the scheme I chose shows brown, brown and brown and I'm sure I ordered 3 shades of brown

it just threw me when I sprayed the beige and it was green

Now I'm not too sure if the dark brown goes with the sand and GREEN

I will have to wait till I finish it to see the overall effect, either way it will brighten up a grey shelf

I wonder if it could have been an issue with labeling like Model Master had with their RLM colors!?
(They switched the RLM 82 and 83 labels, so if you need the actual rlm83, you have to get the rlm82)
But regardless, its looking sharp, and it will liven up a grey shelf!

Well..... I didn't like it so I started again and guess what? I kind of don't like this one either

Maybe it's just me but something doesn't look quite right. Admittedly this one looks more like the pic but I'm still not happy with the overall colours

Only the tail section left to do so I will wait till it's all finished before I make up my mind as to whether I start again.......Again

I also liked how it turned out, but judging by this pic the leading edge is the same colour as the light brown. Just that my brown isn't orangey (is that a word) enough, in fact none of my colours are like the pic

Don't suppose anyone has got some pics of this actual aircraft? preferably from above

Camo is all finished, it's nowhere near perfect and can do with some touching up in places. I actually don't mind the colours now that I'm looking at it completed and TBH if I started again I would just paint it all grey

next step is finishing the engines, gluing back on the pitot (think that's what it was) I accidentally snapped off and giving it a nice coat of gloss in prep for the decals.

Cheers guys,
Well it's almost complete, just the decals and nav lights to go on. There is one piece I have left off, it's a long clear rod thing that goes under the tail between the horizontals. It doesn't say to paint it and if I do stick it in then it's about 8mm too long and the plane can't sit on its wheels. So what is it and do I need it

? I've looked at pics of the real aircraft and can't see it on them so I guess I'm ok leaving it off

oh yeah, that little strange piece

Lmao no one answer this one please as I have just realised what it is for and I shall take myself outside and give myself a slap

but why have a random hole in the fuselage that needs filling

Now that is a good use for it and is probably what it is for

but it's too long and wouldn't using that negate the added weight in the nose. Well I'm leaving it off but must remind myself to fill the hole

Cheers Guys,
That's the decals all done

I have a love hate relationship with decals, but I think we all do. They do finish the models off nicely but sometimes I really hate doing them, especially when there's lots of the same repetitive 'no step' or tiny fiddly ones that stick to everything BUT the plane

Luckily there wasn't too many on this one but I'm dreading the F-15 decalling

Well once the micro sol dries I'll clean up any residue and seal them in, but I'd say this one is now complete and it's time to move on to the next one
