I thought I'd have a go at a larger and more challenging model, I've only done four or five 1:72 planets so far, I liked the look of the Eurofighter so I bought it from Hobbycraft ( it was either this or several bags of little coloured rubber bands!!).

So, I've started with the two seats and I have my first dilemma, should I assemble them prime and paint or prime and paint then assemble.

I'll try and keep this builds progress logged as I go along.

If asked that question a few months ago then I would have said paint and assemble but now I tend to assemble then paint.

I've found that some of the new CAD developed kits have such fine tolerances that a couple of layers of paint can affect the alignment of the parts. You also tend to get a much more secure structure as well.

It doesn't have to be all of one of course, you could always paint parts that would be difficult to access after assembly first and do the rest post assembly.

That looks like it could be a nice kit to build. How old is the kit?

Watch out for the intake area as it can be a bit of a problem and in my opinion and a bit over engineered
As to your question build then prime/paint

I've partly assembled the seats and some of the cockpits and primed them with humbrol white matt primer ( rattle can).



I've painted inside the back of the seats and the back before i've glued them together.


so that there are no white bits showing that I can not get at.


This seems to have worked fine.

Looking good. I tend to build as much as I can before painting, this saves on the number of sub assemblies to paint, and plus I hate gluing together already painted parts.

I have this kit in the stash, so will be looking forward to seeing you build yours.

Definitely assemble then paint.

Painted and dry brushed the seats, I'm very happy with how they look.

You've made a good start Nevbo I'll be watching this one closely as I have the single seater in my stash waiting for me to start.

I've made a start on the cockpits. Mixed up Revells little Grey ( 75% grey 25% white )


I made a bit of a cockup of the cockpits to start off with.


But I hope I've sorted them out and they look much better now

Started put the fuselage together and the first thing a found was the pilots display screens were too upright and didn't fit up against the front of the cockpit opening, so I had to snap it off and reposition it correctly.


Then I nearly missed this little piece at the back


Got the two halves together easily and gave the cockpit rim a coat of revell anthracite. It'll need another one tomorrow.

Great job love the paint job so far. Looks neater than an airbrush paint job

I've started to assemble the air intakes, they are over engineered ( as you saidNige201980 ) and nothing fits together very well

And there's a flipping hole in the side of me plane !!!!!!

fit this part at the correct stage and you don't have a hole.

Put the wing on now and they done fit at all well



It doesn't show on the picture, but there is a big gap between the wing and fuselage of the plane.

This is getting worse as I go along.

Done a bit more on the Eurofighter. I've decided to have a closed canopy

Finally got some time to do a bit more.

Landing gears is another part I hate doing especially if the instructions aren't clear

You may also see at the bottom of the last photo a gap has appeared at the back of the canopy

I'm sort of happy with this build. From certain angles it looks good, just don't look to close!


What do I think about this kit and how to build went?

1. Apart from me not following the instructions and thinking I had a hole in my plane and the decals numbers being wrong for the screens in the instrument panels, they were easy to follow and relatively easy to work out what to paint which colour.

2. Some parts of the model were too elaborate and some didn't fit together at all well, leaving me with gaps all over

3. The decal placement instruction were not to clear leading me to guess where a decal should go and also a colour instruction sheet would have made it easier to see what colours went where.

4. The canopy had so much flash on it you could have made a 1:72 scale model out of it, so when I finally go all that off it didn't fit properly ( should have take a photo of it )

These build and fit problems did put me off a bit, so I'm glad it's finished.

So, If you are good at fixing and filling build problems, this is the model for you.
