Another Tamiya 1/32 Corsair F4U-1 Build

Post by Navcom »

I actually had time this evening for SCALE MODELING!!! Haven't had that luxury for a couple months now due to a remodel project. Well, the project isn't done but I need a night off! I have a couple 1/48 scale aircraft in the works but this big bad 1/32 Corsair keeps staring at me every time I walk by it...and my heart seems more interested in doing this one...so I figured, what the heck!

There is absolutely no way I can create a thread that will compete with Paul's videos and threads concerning this monster aircraft, so I'm simply documenting my version for posterity sake in this thread. And like a couple other threads I have going on here, they probably won't get a lot of continuous attention until later this fall. But I need to start in order to keep sane!

This 1/32 Corsair is a friggin balsy model! To explain why I say this, I'll post just one picture to start with (tons of box pictures out there anyhow)...a picture of everything that comes with this masterpiece...

I know you tanker folks are saying "PFFT! That's nothing!" But to an aircraft modeler, this is a sight to behold. Lots of parts...big parts. And just about everything a fella needs to make a great realistic model...even great research pictures and dialog. Tamiya out-did themselves on this one.

I'm starting with the cockpit and the engine. Hopefully get some pieces de-sprued, sanded, and dry-fitted this evening. Not much more time I'm afraid, but something is better than nothing!

Wow! Can't believe it's been 6 months since I posted in this thread! Shows you how busy life has been.

I was able to get back to work on the 1/32 Corsair. I have to say this is one heckuva model that Tamiya put out. The detail is incredible and the attention to the little things is fantastic. The cockpit was a complete joy to put together. I think I've spent the better part of 2 months on and off with it.

I'm nowhere near perfect but it sure was fun to do! Some pix...

Doing some self critique, I can see in the pictures that the dry brushing looks pretty overdone. Seeing it in real life, it's nowhere near this intense. I think having the thing under 100W CFL's is really bringing it out.

I also did not put a lot of work into the belts. Dealing with those little fittely PE pieces was a nightmare. After losing 2 of them to the carpet monster, I just went simple.

Next up...the fuselage! See you in another 6 months!

Thanks Lou! LOL! Not six months...just six hours!! :jd:

Managed to get the fuselage interiors completed today and the cockpit is now cemented into place for all eternity....

The other fuselage side...

And the tail framework and horizontal stabilizer controls are now installed...

Hoping to have the fuselage glued together before the end of the day!
