1/48 Hasegawa Mitsubishi J2M3 Raiden

Post by wally »

Hello Folks

I want to present my latest completed build. This is J2M3 Raiden from Hasegawa in 1/48.
For this build I used aftermarket resin cockpit and metal gun barrels. Goes together very easy and quickly, no much filler needed. Weathering was done using enamel wash. For the first time in this build I use hair spray technique. I not happy in 100% because I think I scrape to much paint especially in the wing root areas. But this is lesson for the next time. After market decals used from the Kagero publishing "Fighter over Japan part II". I choose markings for J2M3 Model 21 from 1 Hikotai 302, Kokutai, Atsugi airbase, Kanagawa Prefecture spring 1945.
Additional info:

Kit manufacture: Hasegawa 09667
Scale: 1/48
Type: J2M3 Raiden
Extras used: Aries resin cockpit, Eduard canopy masks
Paints and colours used: Tamiya AS-12 Silver, XF-12 J.N Grey, XF-11 J.N Green

So here it is :

Another gorgeous build Wally, outstanding mate! :thumb1: :thumb1:   :

I want to know how you achieve that really silky smooth looking paint finish?! Are you using fine grit paper to sand smooth each coat before you put the next layer on?

Cheers :cheers2:

Hello
Regarding smooth finish I only sand a little bit the primer coat after its dry. I used for this the Gunze polishing cloth 6000 or 8000 grit.
And that's it, I try to paint my model on the low pressure below 20PSI. I think that helps to improve the quality of the surface finish. Also Gunze paints thinned with
Mr. Color leveling thinner also helps to achieve smooth finish, but it's lacquer thinner so it smells a little bit. You can use this thinner with Tamiya acrylics also, to get smooth finish of your paint work.
i hope it will help.

Stunning work Wally .the finishing of your models is always great !

You mention that you aren't happy with the chipping ? Some Photos that I saw from Japan Planes it is like you paint in Metal and make some chipping on the green  , they are so used !

In your build I think it is perfect ! Beautiful Model !

:cheers2:

Amazing job mate! I love it, it reminds me of a Japanese P-47, a big, burly, heavy, high hp engined fighter
