Good evening

Post by thing »

Hello everyone. Complete virgin modeller here. I found this site by stumbling across one of those 'how to airbrush model aircraft' videos on Youtube.

I'm ex RAF, fly light aircraft recreationally and it was finding a model of a 172 at an air show this year that made me take the plunge at the youthful age of fifty eight...

I've bought myself a little H+S airbrush and compressor. I've figured out which end the paint comes out of but that's about it. I've also bought myself a few models that interest me, all aircraft, mostly 1/48 WWI plus a couple of little 1/72 things to practise on first. I have a quick question, are the Vallejo Air series of paints rated as any good by the modellers on here? I need to buy some paints fairly quickly and wondered what was good and what to avoid. It's all completely new to me, I haven't even bought any glue yet!

Many thanks.

Welcome to ISM :thumb2:

I personally don't rate them at all, while a lot of people say they have no trouble with them, for me they are just too much hassle. Stick to the likes of tamiya or better still the mr hobby aqueous range of paints :thumb2:

:welcome: to ISM mate, as Paul has said, try the Tamiya paints for airbrushing, just be aware that they can be a little tricky for brush painting. I find Tamiya ok for brushing but you usually need to brush a couple of thin layers to get the best out of them.

Welcome to the gang. You're not the only airbrush newbie here, there's a few of us about, but you'll get lots of good advice from here.

Don’t underestimate even that little piece of knowledge. It could mean the difference between painting your model and painting your own face instead.

If you’ve never used an airbrush, I would recommend Tamiya to start with. Tamiya paints are very forgiving in terms of paint/thinner ratios. As Daishi12 mentioned, they can be a bit tricky to brush-paint with. I’ve recently started using AK paints and they’re not bad either.

Whatever you do though, I do recommend buying yourself at least a bottle of Ultimate thinner. You’ll need thinner for your paints anyway, and Ultimate thinner works with all acrylic paints. It even lets you use paint in your airbrush you’re not supposed to be able to airbrush with (Vallejo Model Color for instance).

Anyway; :welcome: to the forum. Hope you’re having fun building.
