Global Scale Modeller

Hey y'all! I picked up this kit from a guy at work that buys/sells kits on eBay. He brings me kits to look at and I can't help myself! Anyway, this is an old kit from 1976 if I am not mistaken. I don't know when this particular kit was made, but it looks old nonetheless (older than I am to be honest ).




Unfortunately, since I have already started this build I do not have any pics of the build process, but here is where I am so far....

This kit has been a blast to build. It was missing a couple pieces, but nothing to take away from the model. I plan on using the US Olive Drab AFV painting system from Vallejo along with a few weathering and mud effects.
I cant wait to work on it some more!

I have this kit and the one with a mortar, built the version with troops in the rear, abot twenty years ago. If I recall it was a decent kit. Fun to see your build, it has been in the top ten kits for me to build all summer, but keeps getting bumped.

UPDATE! It has been a while since I first started this thread, and I have done quite a bit of work! I should have take more pics during the fun, but I am not used to doing "build threads". I will try to give as many details as possible.

First, I painted everything using the AFV Painting System by Vallejo. I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out, but in the end I am happy. It seems a bit light, but I am chalking it up to fading from the sun. Then I started adding some small chips, which turned into some rusty chips. I hope I didn't get too carried away, LOL! Here are some pics:










This model has really shown me how patience is key when adding details. For example, I painted the seats with Testors Rubber 1183 (great for leather) then added Flat Brown 1166 followed by Flat Tan 1167 for wear patches. When I first added the brown I wasn't sure how it was going to end up. But once I put the tan and then blended with thinner, it really changed the look. I was really impressed that I was able make them look like that!

The chipping was done with a lightened Vallejo US grey-green followed by touches of German grey. Then I added the rust spots with Testors Rust then blended with thinner. I then finished with Vallejo pigments Burnt Sienna and Dark Red Ocher in the larger rusted areas and exhaust.

I plan on touching up the chassis a bit to tone down the rust and after shooting some Future, I will add a wash. I am thinking about painting the white star on the hood instead of using the decal. I guess I should do that before the Future??

Thanks guys! Another quick update here. I was looking at some photos of 1:1 M16s and noticed a couple things I wanted to add to my model.

The radio needs an antenna, right?


I used my Dremel as a lathe and turned down some sprue to look like the base and used a thick bread tie (stripped) as the aerial.

And there is a bracket holding the tailpipe on the side.


The bracket is a small flat piece of sprue and the u-bolt is thin bread tie wire.
This is the first time I have scratch-made something for a model and I am really stoked. My mind is racing wondering what else I can do with this kit!

Quick question: which of these looks better?



The left is Vallejo German camo med. brown drybrushed with Vallejo light brown
The right is done in reverse.

I did the left side first and I think it looks too dark. In pictures I have seen the bags look more tan than green or brown. Any suggestions?

UPDATE:

Painted the white star on the hood since the hinges were going to be a major obstacle for the decals. I didn't like the way the bags looked just "hanging there" like nothing was holding them up, so I made "straps" out of bread-tie wire painted light brown to match the bags. I also attached the fender tarp and the tools to the truck cab.




I saw a pic where someone did something like this and thought it would be cool.

Next up is a couple coats of Future, the rest of the decals, then I will try to add some mud/dust effects!

Cool weathering and rust effects. I like the antenna and exhaust bracket too.

So it's been a while since an update. I have been working on a couple other projects. But I did manage to finish the decals and put a wash on the model!







That last pic is the boom antenna I made from a wire tie. I want to tie it down with some string. This is somewhat the "angle" of where it will be tied.
