half built this one earlier this year. Some major fit issues on the nose, and I'm not terribly experienced with fillers so it turned out iffy.

As much as I liked it in black, that's just the undercoat
my LHS was out of Alclad chrome, so rather than wait, I used Dupli-color universal chrome






The Dupli-color chrome works very well, but is very delicate for modeling purposes, as it doesn't react well with other solvent based products applied directly over it, and must first be sealed with Future, or other ACRYLIC clear gloss before adding secondary colors, using Micro-sol, Solvaset, or things like Testors Dull or Glosscote.

One of my all time favorite planes. She's coming along nicely!

Just out of interest, the paint job looks great, so now that its done would you have preferred to wait for the Alclad or are you just as happy, it looks great in the photos, with the Dupli-color?

this isn't meant as a criticism I'm just curious as a near project of mine will be P-51 and I'm pondering which paint to use, I may go completely mad and use foil

I'm a big fan of Dupli-color, and having used the Universal Chrome before, I knew what to expect, and how to handle it, (sealing with Acrylic clear, Future, to protect it) to get the polished Aluminum I wanted. So, in that, I am Very happy with the results.

Alclad, on the other hand, is the best gig in town for this type of project, and they have a full range of metal effect colors, from the mirror chrome, thru to burnt metal, allowing you to pick just what you want, do contrasting panels, even vary the effect by using colors other than black as a base coat.

So, to answer your question, if this was not a "Fun" build on an inexpensive kit without a time limit, or if I were planning this to be a contest model, then Alclad without a doubt, would be my paint of choice.

That being said, my take on the Box Stock build, is to show a beginning modeller that you can do with a basic model kit, with perhaps limited resources, and get great results.
