1:48 Eduard Fokker Dr 1

I know... I've got way to much running projects, but I wanted to build this small prop for I was curious how I would like building planes.
I did build a revell Messerschmitt a while ago, but that was a easy kit and a fast build.
So this Fokker is way out of my comfort zone.
It includes PE (hurray!) and I bought a Sheet of wood grain decals for all the wooden parts.
This is my first go at a small prop plane, so be gentle with me fellas!



Some sprue shots... Only 3 but It takes me more time to put this prop together then I thought.... lol







I started at the propeller.
The reason for this is that at the SMC competition, I have met Alex from "Ushi van der Rosten".
He specializes in Wood grain decals for aircraft. If you like, check his website Here



So with the use of micro FIX and SOL I managed to create a nice looking propeller..



I wanted to use it for the wooden seat as well, but I didn't get the result I wanted.
So I tried to scratch build a wooden seat out of balsa wood.
You can't beat the real thing after all...





And when it's painted it looks pretty nice to me!



After adding the rest of the PE seatbelts I'm almost done with the interior.
The wooden floor board and the wooden triangle at the side of the plane are also done with wood grain decals.



I hope you guys like it so far.
There are a lot of plane builders here, so any tips and criticism are welcome
I have to say hat of for you guys, it's a different cup of joe building and painting the interior first....





The seat would be from wood too, but that plastic part wasn't woodie enough for me, so a scratched a seat from balsa wood.

Great start mate....those wood-grain decals are cool, thanks for the link. I have a Eduard Fokker D.VII "Profipak" kit in my stash that I had intended to build with my Airco DH-2 and display them in a dog-fight for the WWI centenary SiG, but, I ran out of time unfortunately.

Anyway....enjoy building this one and good luck!

Always happy to share a link. The product from Ushi van der Rosten are great, although covering a prop with a decal is not easy to do.
Use a lot of micro sol, and let it do it's work. For wooden panels this stuff is absolutely brilliant

I haven't decided what camo scheme I will use....
I know I want to build the second one as a "Red Baron". That would be nice.
As for painting this first one, I do like the one of Friedrich Kempf.

I'm at closing the fuselage, and got the mid wing on.
But I think it would be a better option to leave the other wings off, and paint them first.
Otherwise I can't paint them properly I think.
I will swing over to your WW1 entry, maybe I can pick up some ideas!

Cockpit finished!





So it's time to glue the two half's together...
A small amount of liquid filler was needed for a hair thin seam...




And the middle wing is added.





Now... as this is new for me, I'm thinking of it would be logical to paint the other two wing before assembling them.
Because this is a tri-plane it would be difficult to paint the wings after the are glued on and above each other.

This is way out of my comfort zone, as for I'm used to building armour.
Build it, prime it, paint it is my motto...

So next update you will see some beautiful painted wings! I hope.... lol

Right... As this is my first "real" plane, I learning down the road.
I heard experienced plane builders say: "when you finished the cockpit, the rest will go pretty fast"..
I thought...sure...
But they were right!
So, skipping ahead a bit, and going to the painting progress all ready

After masking the cockpit, she's ready for priming..
I'm letting the top wing of, this for easy access to the cockpit (the guns need to be added) and for making it more easy to apply the decals and painting the streaks.



And here she's all primed in panzer grey (I'm still a AFV builder..lol)



The underside has a WW1 blue. I did a lot of research for this colour, and I mixed pale blue grey and deep sky blue in a 1:5 ratio.



It looks fluorescent right know, but it dries up darker.



That's better...
Also painted the white squares for the German crosses.



Now for a almost impossible masking job...
Painted the main colour a mix of pale sand and olive drab. 2:4



Protection for the underside...



And the result so far...
Dry fitted the engine, prop and the top wing...









And that's all I have done this weekend!
Next time I will make a start at streaking the wings, and detail painting...

Hello again guys!
Today I finished building the machine guns.
It had some PE work on it, and it looks better then the full plastic parts that were also a option in the kit.

So this is what I have to do...



This is the PE part that has to be bend in a cylinder.



You can use a pencil or whatever you got on the bench, I use this handy tool to make cylinders.




And when all went well, this is the result...



Unpainted, but dry fitted on the plane.





Now to paint the most difficult camouflage I ever did...
Its a streaking on a blue or light olive background.



Here's a pic of how it should look.



I have use a darker olive drab, for I like it better that way.
Starting with a brush with the tip cut off, I made streak lines from top to bottom, starting with a full brush of paint streaking it down until the brush is nearly dry.





With the paint still wet, I do the same with Buff, letting the colours mix a little.



Then With olive drab the same thing again, but this time I worked from left to right instead of right to left.



And it looks like this when finished.
Not bad for a first attempt.





And here's the plane complete with the streaking...









Now I just discovered that I have forgot to paint the wheel base with the same streaking...
No worries, will do that tomorrow...

Final update guys!
I added the last decals, and give the model a matt varnish.
Then it was time to do the rigging.

Boy! Did I underestimate that!
But after a lot of @~*&!! and Mother of all it worked out for me.

So I will show you the pics of the rigging and how it looks now it's finished.
Tomorrow I will take some better pics, for the air gallery



















For my very first 1:48 plane, I had a lot of fun building and painting, and I can now say that I want to do more 1:48 planes

WWI aircraft are my absolute favorite subjects. I've looked at this kit but have hesitated because of the streaked paint. Somewhat intimidating, especially on such a small model! You did a fantastic job!
