Here's my entry
I'm building this kit out of the box, but I did ordered a alu barrel and a better hood for it....
There is a small fret of Photo Etch included, so I'm a happy camper now

HISTORY

The US Military asked various companies to design a troop transport vehicle, and the GMC was the chosen producer. Serving almost every softskin need, the GMC CCKW353 was sold all over the world after WW2 and served in many armies. The Bofors 40mm equipped vehicle serving in France.

THE KIT

• Sprue A - Chassis parts
• Sprue B - Cab and front end
• Sprue C x2 - Suspension and wheels
• Sprue D x5 - Wheels
• Sprue E - Rear bed parts
• Sprue F - Gun and mounting
• Sprue G x2 - Accessories and ammunition

• 9 plastic collars for the wheels
• 1 sprue of clear parts
• Decal for one vehicle
• A short length of copper wire and a length of twine for the winch cable
• 1 fret of photo-etched parts
• Single A4 color sheet
• 16 page A4 instruction book

All appear to be well moulded in a dark olive green plastic, with no obvious mould lines or obtrusive ejection pin marks.
Instructions are well printed and look to be clearly laid out in obvious steps.

Can't wait to start this build, but I'm planning on finishing my Fokker Dr 1 first

I know I will have fun building this kit!
The only aftermarket I'm getting for this build is a alu barrel and a "open" hood.
The wheels (like I said in my review) are not going to be replaced for AM resin wheels.
I'm using the kit wheels. The AM wheels are double the prize of the kit, so a no go this time.

I know what you mean with the am wheels
I checked some prizes lately to see if u wanted some for upcoming builds and they are rather expensive
But look nice and on some kits they are a good add on to use

Jup.... But i'm still doubting though...
I have to look how the wheels of the kit will come out.
I just HATE two part wheels for there is always a seem that should not be there...
But if the fit is right, and I do not have to sand it a lot, I will stick with those.
If not, I'm going for the AM wheels.....

Update 1
The engine

GMC 270 engine, an overhead valve I6 with 91 hp (68 kW) at 2750rpm and 216 lbf·ft (293 N·m) at 1400rpm. A 3 25⁄32 in (96 mm) bore by 4 in (102 mm) stroke gave a 269.5 cu in (4.4 L) displacement. This engine was designed for commercial trucks, and proved strong and reliable in service.

The instructions let you start at the very detailed engine.
I compared the kits engine wit a after market engine, and I have seen no difference between them.
So I decided to build the engine from the kit.

Al lot of parts, very well detailed.

Now it's detailed all right, but as I want to let the hood open, I want to go just a step further.
I'm trying to let this engine look like this one as good as I can.

So I'm needing lead wire, and copper wire...

Drilling holes in the bobbin for the cables.

And with CA glue added the lead wires.

Now I can hear you think... Why not paint the engine first, then add the cables?
Well, if I would do that, I need to drill trough the paint work with chipping risk, and the CA glue would ruin the paint.
Now I can "mask" the CA glue spill with paint rust and grease. More difficult for the lead wire is fragile, but this way works for me.

On thing not included with the kit is the dipstick. So I took a piece of copper wire, and bend it in shape.
With masking tape I made the tube where the dipstick would go in.
It doesn't look pretty right now, but trust me... it will...

That's it for now, more detailing at the engine to be done.

Today I managed to paint the engine.
I love it when my wife is working the late shift!

So we begin with a black primer

Then a olive green, and I all ready begin to highlight some areas.

and finished by painting the details.
This is as close as I can get, for there is very little to find about the colour scheme of this engine.
But I think I came close enough though.

The engine is now ready to receive some weathering like rust where the engine would be hot, grease and oil....
But that will be done when the engine is mounted into the chassis.

I used bright brass from Vallejo and rubbed some AK standard rust pigment on it to make it slightly weathered (oxidised)

Update 3

Started the build at the chassis.
A lot of parts

I already put the engine in.
I know it's already painted, but I can not leave it out for it's impossible to add the engine at the last.
But I can easily mask the engine when I start to paint the chassis, so it will be ok.

The underside of this truck is very detailed, that's a fact.
So more parts to be added!
But first to bend some PE with this handy tool...

Complicated shape, but happy with the result!

The winch is also added, this will be painted later.
I rolled up the wire and put it in place with some CA glue to prevent the wire keep rolling off.

I have never seen a model with this much attention to the axels and differential.
I'm used to build Tanks not trucks, but I like the fact that the kit has as much of details at the underside as above.

So a lot of parts later, the axels are done.

And here the are all connected and in place.
It looks like the are all crooked, I thought so too, but I have checked it 3 times and they are straight.
It's just the angle that fools the modeller eye.
But if they are a bit off, it's easy to correct them when the wheels are on later.

And this is how far I came for now

Update 4

Hello and welcome to another update!

Time to tackle the wheels...

All made from two parts... And I do not like that...
You always end up with a nasty ugly seem. I did found some aftermarket resin wheels, but they were almost twice the cost of the kit,
So I decided to go for the ones in the kit.

And I must say, pretty nice! Great fit, and barley a seem.

Rims constructed and ready to put all together...

And after the necessary sanding, they are all ready!

Thanks to the poly caps, I was able to dry fit the wheels to the axles, to see if all axles were straight and all wheels would touch the ground. It looks great to me

The next step in the instructions is the windshield.

I'm not adding the windshield in this state of construction, I will do that as one of the last things.
However, I can already tread the "glass" with clear.

Normally this treatment is for a planes canopy to make it appear thinner and more glass like.
My experience is that is also works on car windows.

Dip the clear sprue under a few times, and take it out with tweezers.

Let it drip out, but do NOT lay it down on a piece of paper for it WILL ruin the glass!

Instead, build some kind of drying rack like I did here, and lay it flat on the rack without touching the glass.

Putting a CLEAN glass over it to protect it from dust.

Now we will wait until it's dry. So we make a start at the cabin

A nice and smooth build, this kit is falling together by it own...

Some PE rods added

Looking great so far!

Dry fitted the cabin onto the chassis.

And here's where we are today..

The engine will be masked, and the chassis and cabin will be primed and painted first.
Also I will prime and paint the wheels.

This all will be in the next update, together with further build progress.

I did the same trick with the canopy from the Bell 47-D chopper, this time however I did had some clear that was running into one corner without me spotting that before it dried. But as the windshield is going to be dusted, no worries

This kit is literally falling together on it's own. It's much better then I expected.
Most parts are crisp, and if there are sink marks, they are on places were they are hidden.
So I can highly recommend this HobbyBoss kit.
