Tamiya 1/48 BA-64B

Thought I would try my hand at a military vehicle and the Tamiya 1/48 kits looked like a nice introduction to military and armour things. So I picked this little kit up, I have to say I was a bit surprised at how small it was. The detail is really nice for such a small kit, the only thing that is a bit out of scale is the saw on the right side that is a bit too thick and would look a lot better as a PE part. The assembly went without any real problems, only needing sanding of some mould seams and a slight bit of filler on the back.

For painting I started with a coat of Ammo grey primer. I decided to try to add some artificial shadows by painting the the bottom of the fenders and chassis in black and also dusting some black on the lower sides to get a dark grey color. This was then covered with Akan RLM 83, the call out is for XF-61 and as Tamiya uses this for RLM 83 as well I thought it would be close enough, especially after some bleaching and weathering. To add a bit more color variation I mixed a bit of FS34102 Light Green to the RLM 83 and spayed this on the top surfaces. And finally adding a bit of FS36622 to the mix and adding some highlights to some of the top edges.













I's a bit hard to see the different shades but I think it works pretty well. Nothing "in your face" just a slight difference that adds a bit of visual interest. Next up will be some detail painting, chipping and weathering. Then I need to start painting the figure which will be a first.

If you like the AFV try 1:35, nice size, even the smallest jeep.

Lots of selection in 1/35 too.

Have done some more work now. Started with adding some chips with a brush using Ak chipping color. Also painted the tools and painted a 14 instead of using the provided decal.





After this I started with a bit of weathering, first some small rust streaks, oil and grime.





Then came something new to me, mud. Had to do a bit of testing and also start over a couple of times to get a result that I was happy with. I used AK Kursk earth mixed with plaster applied with a brush on the bottom of the fenders and blown with an airbrush to get some splashes. This was the hardest thing to get right and not get too big spots. It's not perfect but for a first try I'm pretty happy with it. Will need to add a few more colors of mud to add some depth to it.
