Hi guys

I'm weathering at the moment and am struggling to get the effect I want

From experience I know that the back decking area was typically awash with dirty oil And water that was thrown out from the engine bay through the rectangular louvres at the back

Any ideas about how I can simulate this, I've toyed with the idea of olive oil with black pigment but thought I'd asks the experts?

Mig productions oil and engine grime wash, creates a brilliant spilled oil effect.

AK interactive has one or two... Oil and Fuel stains... neat products.... easy to use and to buy....
I get mine from Lucky Model Hong Kong ! cuz its cheaper.... to buy and to ship ! no other reasons... LOL

Or plain old thinned oil paint, a bit of lamp black or black if you have it with a bit of raw umber, mixed 50/50 or 60/40 thinner to paint works nice I find.

Totally Agree....even cheaper and The Old ways are always good ! they have been proven time and time again...

Has anyone ever actually tried using oil on their models for this effect? Get a tiny bit of actual engine oil, and dab it around the places you want it?

In the end surely nothing can beat real oil for creating oil stains?????

I've never tried it myself. Mostly because engine oil has caustic properties and I would be worried that it would attack the finish on the model.
Another reason might be that I think that it might be too thick for scale purposes.
You're right to think that using real world items to create model world effects though.
I've done it many times in my dioramas.
Nothing makes better dirt than dirt.

I went for olive oil and pigment in the end, seems to have worked, no reaction when I sprayed it with flat base anyway but I guess there's still time !!!
