I strongly disagree with the so-called "pre-shading" tehnique that sadly has gained such a widespread use. It is not realistic and counter-intuitive. In real life the paint degrades from the outside (weather, sun, scratches and chipping, and so on) not from the inside as this "pre-shading" would lead you to believe.
I begin with the base coat of paint as accurate as possible and on top of that various filters and washes are applied.
My base wash is done from grey pigment, dissolved in water, on top of which other filters are applied. For filters the acrylic Vallejo ranges are used, both model color and Vallejo Air.

Beautiful job mate

I just bought myself the Monogram 1/48 F4C/D Phantom about 2 weeks ago, so, I'm looking forward to doing it when I get around to that kit. I'm assuming your cockpit is an after-market set and not scratch-built enhancements? And if so, what is the cockpit set called and where is it from? I'd like to tart my cockpit up when I build mine...I've always built straight from the box, but it's about time I joined the big boys and put in some extras!

Another excellent F4, absolutely stunning. These models are inspirational to we (well me) beginners.

This sort of information is invaluable to new guys like me. Thank God for the internet. When you say your base wash was done from grey pigment, what grey pigment was it exactly? I want to try a wash on my next but one model for the first time. By the way I agree with your pre shading comments, I spent some years as a techie on F4's and Harriers and never actually saw paint fade from the inside out...

There were two distinct stages: The surface needs to be high gloss, so that the subsequent paint does not adhere too well and can be worked on. At first matte grey paint was misted with the airbrush. The weathering was then completed by using a mixture of oil based paints.
