After seeing some of the awesome dioramas on the forums I have decided to have a go at one myself.Being my first crack at a dio I decided to use a couple simple cheap Tamiya kits in case I bork this thing up

The victims:

Image

Here is what I am going to use for my dio base.Basically it's a diorama-in-a-box (kinda cheating I know :D )

Image

Image

I decided to start with the PAK 40 first. The build went really fast and I had the build portion done in a couple hours.

Next I primed everything with Alclad black primer/microfiller.

Image

Then I sprayed everything with Vallejo desert sand.I don't know if it is "correct" or not,but it looks good to me :D

Image
Image

After a coat of clear I gave everything a pinwash using cheap 59 cent acrylic paint.

Image

I then did some chipping using Vallejo German grey.I am still trying to get my chipping technique down so I kinda got carried away playing around.

After the chipping dried I used some AK streaking rust on some of the chips.

And that's where it stands now.I still need to do final assembly and add some dust effects. Thanks for looking :cheers2:

Nice work Steve, the Pak 40 looks great. The Oasis dio pack is interesting (Its not cheating).

Thanks for the kind words guys :cheers2:

I got some more work done on the PAK 40 today.Got final assembly done and gave it a coat of AK Interactive Africa dust.

Image

It looked ok but the dust effects looked too uniform so I used a thinner dampened brush and stumped the dust effects a little.

So,I am going to call the PAK 40 done and now move on to the Sdkfz 251 :cheers2:

Great progress Steve. You are doing well and I can't wait to see more .... A diorama in a box, great idea, not seen that before!

Great work on the PAK, Steve. The weathering looks awesome. Looking forward to seeing how the diorama comes together. Seems like its a new package for many of us here.

Ok,after a little break from this build I have managed to get some more done on it.

All of the initial assembly is done and everything is in AK Interactive primer.

Image

I am going to add some rust to the muffler so I broke out the Mr Surfacer 500 and stippled it on randomly.

Image
Image

I decided it would be almost impossible to assemble the interior with the two hull halves together so I will do it like an aircraft cockpit and build the interior first.Nothing special, just painted it with Vallejo desert yellow and added some Vallejo German dark brown chipping and some various detail painting.I painted the shifter knobs with some Bakelite color I mixed up myself.

I am on vacation this coming week so I hope to get this thing wrapped up soon, thanks for looking :cheers2:

Doing a cracker job so far, I love half tracks (especially the Hanomag) and I love the Afrika Corps colours, just something about the yellow really appeals to me :) . Keep it up, I like the idea of a dio from the box, it seems like a good way to make a start :D .

Ok,this thing is getting real close to being done.I have the hull painted, chipped and rust streaks down.In my opinion there is too much chipping and rust but this is just a skill building test subject so I am not worried about 100% accuracy.I also have the tools and MG's painted and ready to go,hopefully I can finish this part of the project up this weekend and get started on the figure painting and diorama portion pretty soon. Thanks for looking :cheers2:

That's a hell of a lot of detail crammed into very little space Steve. It looks good bud. :)

Thanks again for the kind words :cheers2: Well,I am going to call part 2 of this build done.I am not 100% happy with the dust job on this,I wanted to use pigments but I didn't use any on the PAK 40 so didn't think it would look right.Anyway here are the final pics.

Now with that done it's on to phase 3 of this build(and the one I'll most likely stuff-up) the diorama base and figures. Thanks for looking :cheers2:
