Getting back into the hobby after a couple of years away. Discovered this forum through the you tube videos which I have found to be extremely helpful. Since I am beginning a new I am in the purchasing accessories phase. Looking for an air compressor,but have one question I could use some help with. I have a compressor I use for my mechaNic tools. Will that work with model airbrushes or do I need one specifically for modeling?

With regard to the compressor you may find some difficulty with 3 things :-

1. The air pressure with mechanics compressors needs to be significantly higher to power air tools. From previous working experience the factory I worked in used to run a compressor at about 90psi. I used a full sized spray gun at between 60-80psi. The guys here average between 12-25psi for their airbrushes. Bearing in mind that this is just personal experience I would imagine that you would need to dial the pressure back as far as possible. Even then you would need to keep an eye on "pulsation"

2. The air hoses from a mechanics compressor would usually be between 3/8" and 1/2" bore so you would need to find a step-down convertor to go the much smaller airbrush air lines.

3. The noise level of your current compressor may be significantly louder than an airbrush compressor. i.e. your current compressor is designed to be used either outdoors or in a workshop, airbrush compressors are designed to be used indoors.
