Biplanes and Triplanes

Right I have just purchased Eduard 1/48 Sopwith Camel

And I have never done this type of aircraft before.

Does anyone have and tips and tricks to pass on for when building these sorts of planes?

Being patient and careful is really really important it also helps to paint and decal before putting the top wing on to avoid breakages/problems I don't know much about rigging though

There are two routes to go. Stretched sprue or fishing line, a pair of forcepts and superglue gel.

One tip is to make a copy of the upper wing out of clear plastic, including the strut location points, that way you can use it to get the struts in the right place.

Ill be rigging my beriev s soon as I have finished the bf 109z.

I recall in a triplane build elsewhere 'elastic thread' being used for the rigging and painted; it was highly recommended. Sorry I don't know the product name, brand. But I understood it was otherwise used in knitting socks (?)

the stuff is called ez line. models r go do small reels for a couple of quid

i used it on my 1/48 neuport and fokker builds

just checked models r go web site a 3m reel (fine) which will do a good few 1/48 kits is £1.39

The ez line is black, if you want a finish like the picture, that might be more cumbersome than it's worth....the elastic thread I saw used virtually soaked up the aluminium/silver paint.

I have EZ line which I use for aerials on aircraft - it's ace stuff

Here's a photo of a little trial build I did of a Matchbox 1/72 Boeing P-12E to test options and to practice doing biplane rigging. As you can see it wasn't entirely successful...



For the rigging I used two different thicknesses of fishing line 0.4mm on the wings and 0.28mm on the elevators. Both the wings, elevators & tail fin were drilled and the line threaded through before fixing with CA. I tensioned both lines as much as I dared but both still show a lot of curves into the drill holes. Additionally the colour really doesn't work I will look into getting some EZ line to try out for the next rigged build but I thought you would be interested in seeing something that didn't work.

No it was a clear elastic thread he used then used a metilizer paint to colour it
