Firstly I removed one link from each track run and tried to glue the sag in to place. The tracks being workable are semi-glued. In some areas they are very stiff and in others not so much. Some primed road wheels. That is the hat my grandfather wore in North Africa behind my foam wheel holding thing. I probably should put that somewhere less likely to get paint on it.

I got everything primed and started on the basecoat of the wheels. I'll be going for a late war two tone camo of essentially buff and hull red.

That's all for now, starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now that we're in paint mode.

Thanks guys, quick update as I have a super long day at work tomorrow. Just got home and laid the buff over top of the hull red. Sorry about the picture quality my camera seems to be messing up. I may have made a mistake as I glued the upper and lower hull and now I'm having trouble getting the wheels and track on. Only the right side of track is on and there is obviously touch up paint and detail painting up next before the clear coat.

Paint is based on the SdKfz Foundations Jagdpanther.

After tomorrow I should have time to take some better pics. I had a serious situation earlier today involving an interior wash I seem to have averted.

Had one of those horror nights. Was trying to add white inbetween the camo colors. My airbrush will no longer shoot thin lines, it sprays spotty wide garbage so I decided to try and hand paint it. That looked like a child painted it. So I raged and stripped all the paint with alcohol. Repainted some of the black base coat, unknown if it'll look good at all. I might not finish this kit.

That camo was looking great, but sorry to hear that you ended up stripping the paint of with alcohol?!

it's primed again. Yeah 91% alcohol takes Tamiya acrylics off pretty well. Hadn't tried it before. I think it's salvageable. I think.

OK. she was stripped. re-primed. and mostly repainted. This picture is not a good one so my apologies. The only camera I had at hand was a telephoto lens on a DSLR. But apart from redoing the barrel which I had to re-hull red the camo is done done done.

Such a good feeling to win against a model that you saw falling apart in your hands.

The difference is now there is a faint white stroke in some places, I also think the camo is a bit more like the source this time around. So I plan to finish the barrel before work tomorrow night and start detail painting.

Haven't had any time since I salvaged the camo. Did a little dry fitting and tool painting the last two days.

I won't try and fit those Bronco tracks on again until I've weathered them. Putting the Schurzen on was such a bonehead mistake.

Looks great Alex! Glad you could resurrect it - I had a massive FUBAR with my P-47 build recently (completely cocked up the Alclad base) so I can understand the frustration...its why I reckon its good to have more than 1 kit on the go and also to have an armor and aircraft build on the go..

BTW Ive nicked some of your ideas and solutions for my own Jaggie build, hope you dont mind!

So a bit of an update and perhaps a call for advice. I did a coat of Future, then decals, then Future again. I think I was supposed to do that. I'm glad I did, because as it had in our tests (girlfriend and I) the Micro Sol started eating my paint job. I have no idea why this is happening. But even on Future covered Tamiya paint, when I used micro sol it started to eat the paint. Wish I would've taken a picture but I was pretty pissed off. The second coat of Future actually fixed the problem, so I guess what I meant to say was the Micro Sol ate the Future.

used just water on the next 3 and all is well(ish).

I did the second coat of future way too earlier I think so the decals had no time to dry or settle, but I needed an answer to if my paint job was ruined so whatever.

So the problem I need advice on is the weathering products I should buy. I thought I could get by making my own enamel washes from the huge stash of Model Masters enamels I still have but don't use. And still think perhaps I can get by using the super cheap oil paints I bought from the craft store instead of 502 Abteilung as I'm on quite a tight budget.

Today I tried to use this "Mona Lisa" oderless turpentine I bought on the advice of a guy on some forum with some Model Masters enamel to make a wash/filter and it turned in to cheese curds. No go on that for sure. I mixed up a little with standard Model Masters paint thinner and it didn't seem right either, so I decided maybe I should just invest in some proper enamel washes from MIG or AK before I try to go making my own.

So here's what I want to know. What do you guys think is the most imperative product to buy? I just ordered MIG dark and neutral wash and some AK white spirit and streaking grime. I really wanted to make all of these things by myself as I could alter their subtle colors to my needs, but I guess I have a bit to learn yet. And do you guys know about using low end oils for fading and dot filters? Am I in for some problems there too? I will probably try that out on a test kit.

It just annoys me as I'm ready for weathering (although a little afraid to chip the thing) and I just have no stuff to use on it.

Interesting dilemma.

Every modeller has different methods etc so there are a plethora of tips you can try out, I will humbly offer my basic method which I hope will be of some use...

I cover the basic paint job with Klear. Enough should be applied so that the model is shiny and toy like. This will protect the paint and the kit. I have never had paint ruined by the weathering as I stick to Tamiya mostly. If the kit is not coated well enough the white spirit washes will attack the glue and I have had bits falling off following a wash! Care must be taken to apply the Klear evenly and gently so that it does not pool and drip!

When the Klear is dry I apply the decals and decal solution, but can't say the Klear has failed under this (I use Mr Hobby set and sol). Once dry apply another coat of KLear to seal them in.

For washes and filters etc I use off the shelf white spirit, 'student grade' Daler Rowney oils, so a cheap product with no issues, and to a limited degree Humbrol enamels all thinned with white spirit.

I also use occasionally the tailored products for washes and filters but understand that these are just pre-prepared enamels with a thinner, so not too dissimilar to your own oil and white spirit.

Sorry for the waffle, it's sometimes easier to explain in a conversation than typing all this. Hope this helps, best thing is to experiment a little to find what products and techniques work for you.

Just a quick "I'm still here" post. I'm working on weathering in the small bit of spare time I have from work.

I base coated the tracks, which i liked. I feel like the Mig dark wash is too thick and brown though. I am not sure if I will try to lighten that up. I love love love the oil wash of burnt umber I put on the tank. I could stop weathering right now and be happy with it. It's actually one of the reasons I'm not any further. It's the best a tank I've made has ever looked and I'm afraid I'll cock it up.

The wash has left some specular streaking I hope will get taken out by the mat coat. Anyway, I think I can see the finish line, and I WILL have it done by August 31st. This is not meant to be a beauty shot, just how she's sitting on the bench today.

Looks great Adam, don't be too hasty getting rid of the streaking though. If they are vertical streaks they may assist developing the rain streaks if you need them

Ah, I see. When you apply washes and filters, try to work the brush down for vertical planes so if you do get marks they will appear as streaking. You should be able to work the tide marks out with thinner as you say. Well done though, it's coming together really well.

That's looking great and the wash has tied it all in nicely. I would say that if you're happy with it so far, then call it a day - it looks fantastic to me. You can always try a bit more weathering on the next one and who knows, you might want to re-visit this one at a later date. As far as oils go, I use cheap budget ones from Reeves (not sure if they're available in the US, but I'm sure there's an equivalent brand) as they're only to provide an effect and most of it gets "washed" off anyway. I actually spend more money on an artist's grade white spirit as it's this that will make the difference once its all mixed up.

And well done again, it looks awesome!!

Well, I wish I'd have listened to you but I decided to go ahead with the dot filters and the pin wash. I loved it the way it was. But I'm just going to see this through. Thanks for saying it's looks fantastic, it really is my first proper build.

So update. Long story short I did a dot filter/streaking pass. It was a little heavy on the orange side, but that's ok as I felt the buff was a little too bland anyway. I had wanted to use a yellow or orange filter, and this is essentially what I have now.

Tonight I did a pin wash with diluted Mig Dark Wash. I feel like that wash was too thick still. It was that or black as that was the only dark oil paint I had. So it looks a little more sludge washey than I intended, but it's turning out to be a bit of a happy accident as it's starting to look like a Jagdpanther that's seen some action. So here are a few shots. Chipping would be next, that's one step I'm terrified to do. I practiced on an old kit and it looked awful. So we shall she. Also I had the intertial starter snap off on the rear of the tank, going to need to perform some surgery for that one.

Wheels are poorly dry fitted, still a little on the shiny side as I've just finished. I am trying to figure out how I'll detail that jack block. Not entirely sure yet.

The wash is a little heavy yet in places, as it didn't flow well enough. I'll go back and try to clean her up more tomorrow if I get time. My week picks up considerably from Tuesday night forward as I work a ton.

I did a base coat, dark wash, then paint the bare metal on the tracks and fitted them to my spare Panther G hull as they're a pain to get on the actual Jagdpanther. I plan to do a burnt umber wash then pigments.
