ICM 1/48 Sd.Kfz 222 finished.

Post by chief5437 »

Here's my GB kit finished.

Nouvion, Northern France. Winter 1942.
Sd.Kfz 222 was a 4 wheel drive, armoured reconnaissance car used by German Panzer Regiments.

Designed in 1935, it saw service in all theatres throughout the war. Although it performed well in Europe and to some extent in Africa, it suffered on the Eastern Front due to the extreme winters and poor road network.

Armed with a 20mm cannon and a 7.92mm machine gun, it had a crew of three. Commander, driver and gunner.

Designed primarily as a recon veh, the 222 was extensively used as a liaison veh, and Staff Offr transport.

This particular vehicle is 'Hubert Jr', commanded by Lt Hubert Gruber and driven by Obersoldat Clarence. Gunners name is unknown.

Shown during the winter of 1942, when Lt Gruber was on R and R from the Russian front. While Lt Gruber enjoys the hospitality and entertainment of Cafe Rene (maybe one of the famous French singers of the period, like Edith Melba Artois) , Obersoldat Clarence and his gunner wait outside in the snow standing by the fire to keep warm.

On the northern coast of France, Nouvion was a very interesting place during the war. The French (led by Michelle Dubois) and communist resistance operated in the area, as did the famous British spy Captain Crabtree. At least two RAF aircrew owe their lives to the resistance. Records show that Flt Lts Fairfax and Carstairs were hidden by the resistance with the help of the cafe owner, Rene Artois.

This has been a great build for me, with more than its fair share of firsts! But there haven't been any major issues, the biggest being my first base was a 'little' over scaled!
So as for my first group build, I've really enjoyed it and its given me back a piece of my modelling mojo that may have been lost!
I'd also like to thank everyone for their tips and advice along the way,

Cheers guys!

This is really nice, I think you have the base spot on now and the way you haven't gone overboard with the snow makes it more real IMHO. Congratulations!

fantastic result, a small diorama with nice effects like the cobble stones and the snow, superbly painted figures and a nicely weathered vehicle. you did a great job on the model and on the building review!

Really nice work, and at 1/48 scale! Good detail all around. Need to go watch the build up. Love the cobbled street.
