Schwimmwagen Italeri 1/35 + Diorama

Hi Guys,

In a scale model contest I won a Schimmwagen!
And I want to make a little diorama with it.

What I plan to do is to let the schwimmwagen come out of a river onto the riverbank.
To make water in a diorama will be a first for me and I would love to here some tips on how
best to make water. What kind of stuff to use for it, if it can be done with stuff you find in
a hardware store or if the only proper way to do it is to buy 'modeling-water-stuff' and how
to work with it. For example: How do I make ripples?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Maybe a link to a tutorial or something..

Anywho, here is my (tiny) progress so far.

Added figures. I took 2 figures from the Kubelwagen I recently made and I assembled a figure from old parts.

I just got that kit and am planning a very similar dio....the water effects can be done in several ways and it depends on how deep the water is going to be. I have seen some use two part epoxy resin the kind u use for fiberglass to create deep water. It can be tinted with acrylic paints. For shallow or moving water less then an inch deep u can use bathroom caulk the clear kind u find in hardware stores make sure it says dries clear....whats nice about this is that its thick and waves can be scuplted around sunken rocks and logs....it come in a tube and is white when applied but dries clear and is paintable also. Checkout utube lots of videos there on the subject....good luck the build looks good so far!!!

Thanks so much mate! This is all very helpful. I am defenitely going to check out the bathroom caulk thing. Cause I am going to need ripples because the schwimm is driving out of the water and is going to make lots of ripples.

Applied the base colour.
A rusty colour that will be chipping through with hairspray- and salt technique later.



Painted the figures in Waffen SS uniforms.
Face shadows and basic weathering is next.

Salt applied - for the salt chipping - on the model that is made wet with water.




Final coat painted over the dried up salt and base coat.


Painted highlights on final coat.


Salt removed to expose base colour.


Diorama base with embankment of styrofoam.


Added layer of DAS clay.


Swimm position on the dio.


For the earth/mud I use real earth with white glue, water and some fine sand (the stuff you put in bird cages)


For small rocks I use kitty litter.


The earth mixture, the kitty litter and some small stones and grit from the garden applied.


The schwimm plus figures ready painted.


Dio painted in the right shades and colours.


Added some grass, some bushes and little plants and made the tracks look wet with varnish.


That's all for now folks.
Waiting for the can of 'water effects' from Valejo to arrive.
So I can fill the river.

Time to add the water!

My order of Vallejo's Water Effects had come in:



It's white and yoghurt but dries clear. I mixed some brown acrylics through it to make the water look murky
Because cars are driving through it won't be clear:







I really hope that it dries as clear/murky as I intended it to be. It's pretty hard to guess how much acrylics can be added
without making the end result to opaque.

Very Nice Diorama !

I used Vallejo water effects two times , one already was blue ( didn't like the effect ) then another time used this same but paint the bottom and put it above , first I thought that will stay white as yougurt as you say , still it dried and become transparent ...will like to see the result of your idea ( wich is very nce ...) to see the result , I would use it again for Vietnam GB and also would like to that the water will be with the effect of your Diorama .

Hi guys,

Bad news! The Water Effects from Vallejo didn't have the desired 'effect'.
It dried very very slowly, it didn't become transparent (probably due to the added amount of paint) and cracks appeared!!
Water can have no cracks! Here is the disasteress result:



Luckily I was able to salvage the Schwimm and the diorama by pulling the Schwimm out and cleaning it.
And Pealing and cleaning the water effect of of the dio. Because it hadn't hardend fully yet this was still possible.



Now I'm going to restore the dio. My backup plan consists of my second choice of 'water effects', Painters Acrylic Kit from Bison.
That I already bought as an alternative. How foreseeing was I ?!

No. I applied it on the dio immediately and stuck the Schwimm in.

That was looking great until it started drying. But at least you're trying with different experiments....it's all a learning curve! Good luck with method #2!

I just caught up on this Han, so far it look awesome buddy. Too bad about the water effects. I've never tried that product myself, it's good to know that caution is needed with it.
The schwimm looks excellent.
What did you use for that grass by the way, it looks awesome?

I'm sorry mate, I don't remember and I don't have the packaging anymore..
It's a kind of grass mat that can be cut or torn into pieces or used as a whole.

Next time when I'm in the modelshop I'll look it up!

It's still very white after 24 hours! (This picture is from just after application)

Is that where Falty Towers was situated?
And if so was it at least partly filmed there?
And does that hotel or building realy exist in Torquay?

Yes Han, Fawlty Towers was set in Torquay, but none of the series was ever filmed here. You may or not know that in the '70 Monty Python filmed quite a few episodes in and around the area, they once happened to stay in a hotel called The Gleneagles and that's were John Cleese got the idea for Fawlty from.
The Gleneagles is now subject to planning to be knocked down and retirement flats put up in its place!!

A shame they're pulling the place down though. If only for this historical fact.
Must have been a great place to stay (with Polly ) in the seventies.
