Airfix 1/48 Spitfire Mk Vb

Hi everyone, new member here. Long term browser but finally decided that joining up and posting some pictures would give me a bit of an incentive to keep my builds moving along!

This is a new tool kit from Airfix, built a lot of the older kits when I was younger, but had heard good things about their new stuff.



Cockpit detail isn't anything great, but as I'm doing this with closed canopy, I'm not too worried





Scratch made some basic belts out of Tamiya tape and solder wire, but they are too big and not really happy with them. But it was late at night and my first attempt at 1/48 seat belts, so I've left them in for now. I'll cut the canopy off the sprue and see what they look like when it's on, no doubt will end up changing them.




This is where I'm up to just now:




Somehow ballsed up the fitting of the fuselage just behind the cockpit so will have to get the filler out. Got a busy week ahead and then I'm out to Dubai for 17 days, so it might be staying like this until the new year.

Welcome to ISM buddy! I've recently built the same kit, can't fault it. I'm not one for picking fault, but I'd maybe think about the size of those harness straps & buckles. Just saying as you've done such a good job on the cockpit. Really sorry for posting this when you've just joined, I'm not a nasty person, lol!

Nah don't worry, always open to critique! Think I mentioned just above the pic that I realised I'd made them too big, they'll be getting trimmed when I get the chance. I've only ever scratch built straps for 1/72 and definitely over estimated the up-scale!

Don't think I'm ever going to be happy with the harness belts, but once the canopy's on you'll never be able to tell. Just wanting something there to give an impression of the real thing. Bit of an improvement:

I think someone should send Lee a Lego kit instead of an Airfix one. Those are easier to build!

Well, this has been on the back burner for a while, but finally made some progress tonight. Primed and preshaded. Decided to go with the open canopy, I lost my patience trying to get the closed one to fit.

Thanks guys. Got most of the painting done last night. Used an undercoat of metallic paint and then dabbed on Humbrol Maskol with a sponge to make the chipping effects.

Great work on this so far! I just finished Tamiya's 1/48 Spitfire Mk I this summer and I now truly love the curves of this aircraft. I will have to get another Spitfire soon!

Well, the end is in sight! All the major decals on, a few more wee ones to go, then just some final weathering. Don't think I'm going to go too overboard with the weathering, the last spit I built I went all out, so I'd like to keep this one looking a bit newer and cleaner for contrast. Probably just a light wash will be enough.
