"Nuclear Winter" - Zvezda's 1/72 Topol (Sickle) ICBM Launcher

Post by SKANKSTA »

Evening all,

I present to you my first ISM reveal, Zvezda's Topol mobile ICBM launcher. This missile and its carrier are formidable, having a total length of 29.5m and a destructive yield of 800kt of TNT, equatable to about 53 Hiroshima bombs.

The kit was fairly straight-forward to build, having few surprises or pit-falls. If I were to build it again, I would build it in transport mode rather than launch mode. Although launch mode gives a much more impressive model, it means that its entire weight is concentrated into the four outrigger supports rather than the 14 wheels. This relatively large weight over a tiny area means very large stress was applied and so each of the feet broke off at least once and had to be reapplied. To say the least, a few expletives were thrown about.

The diorama, as its title suggests depicts the Topol recently abandoned by her crew midst fallout from a nuclear war. I wanted to go for a look of desolation. I think It came out pretty well.

Cracking model and great dio. I wonder why the Russkis named an ICBM missile launcher after a Jewish actor?:

Thanks, guys! Avgas: (Sorry for not knowing your actual name) "Topol" is Russian for "sickle" I believe. The fact that it's also the name of the Fiddler on the Roof is irrelevant, lol. Norm: Me too, although it would be 84cm tall!
