German ISAF dingo "drone down"

for this diorama I wanted to chose a less common subject, so I picked the main German patrol car, the dingo A3.3 PatSi. the diorama will be of an ISAF patrol that are in the mountains in Afghanistan and have come across a down us RQ-7B UAV drone. These are the kits that I will be using

the Dingo is a brand new kit and revell has really outdone themselves with this one, the quality is excellent and I specifically chose the one with the PatSi unmanned gun system. It comes with a lot of sprues, 2 of which a clear and 4 rubber tyres

the UAV is from academy and is moulded in different colour sprues along with 2 figures, of which won't be used, its alright but the quality doesn't matter as if has just be shot down

I began work on the dingo with the highly detailed chassis, I didn't add the wheels because they will be done separately, I decided I will do this build a bit differently by building it in lots of different sub assemblies. the highlight is probably the exhaust which is well detailed and modelled

I painted the chassis in black and then lightened it with a dark grey colour (the real chassis is black) I then picked out details in green and metal. I also used a light mist of sand to weather it along with some sand and rust pigments. the first sub assembly done.
the next sub assembly would be the crew compartment that was well detailed. I built everything that would require the interior colour up, I also modified on of the racks that in reality had holes in it, but the mould was flat, so I used a 2.5MM drill bit to correct it. the seat belts were also missing, so they need some scratch building to correct it, I used foil from a wine bottle.

the parts are ready for painting, it wasn't until this point that I realised how big these are, most 1/35 cars are much smaller!

time for a bit of history

The ATF Dingo is a German heavily armored military infantry mobility vehicle based on a Unimog chassis with a V-hull design, produced by the company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). It is designed to withstand land mines, rifle fire, artillery fragments and NBC-threats. ATF stands for Allschutz-Transport-Fahrzeug, meaning all-protected transport vehicle in German. It is named after the Australian native dog, the dingo. Currently KMW is developing the Dingo 2 GFF for the German Army with increased internal volume.

The ATF Dingo has a modular design with five elements: chassis, protection cell, storage space, engine compartment, and bottom mine blast deflector. Its design is lighter and includes an armored chassis with a blast pan instead of the more common monocoque hull found in modern blast resistant vehicles. IBD's layered MEXAS is used and the windows are angled to deflect blasts and bullets. A tarpaulin is used over the back storage area instead of metal to save weight.

The Dingo's standard armament is a Rheinmetall MG3 7.62 mm machine gun in a remote-controlled turret on the top of the vehicle, borrowed from KMW's Fennek. The operator sits safely inside the cabin, sighting the weapon with periscopes.

Recently the Bundeswehr ordered several hundred fully remote-controlled weapons stations from KMW, for its Dingos and other armored vehicles: the light "FLW 100" (for the MG3 or the Heckler & Koch MG4), and the heavy "FLW 200" (for the M3M .50 BMG or the HK GMG automatic grenade launcher). The weapons station is controlled by an operator viewing a monitor inside the vehicle.

Dingo 2 was first introduced in 2003 as a demonstrator. Three vehicles were developed initially: two long (3.85m) wheel base (LWB) vehicles and one with a short (3.25m) wheel base (SWB). The development of the LWB vehicles was funded by Germany and the SWP development for presentations was funded by KMW. The two LWB vehicles underwent trials between November 2003 and May 2004. After six months of trials, the vehicle was accepted for entry into service in 2004. The vehicle finally entered into service in late 2004.

The APV was tested in various overseas missions in countries including Bosnia, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Lebanon. As of November 2010, the vehicle is in use in Germany, Belgium, Austria, Luxembourg, Norway and the Czech Republic. In Germany, the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB) is the government branch that deals with the orders of the vehicle.

The Dingo APV is named after the native Australian dog, the Dingo. The long and short wheel base vehicles have payload capacities of 3.5t and 4t respectively.

The Dingo 2 GSI (battle damage repair) vehicle has a payload of up to 2t and is used for logistics and deployments. The mobile workshop variant provides cabin space for three personnel and an integrated storage system. The vehicle is also equipped with its own generator to produce electricity.

The Dingo 2 ground surveillance vehicle (BÜR) features a radar system with the same safety and mobility features as that of its parent. Dingo 2 pickup is a mobile logistics variant. It is heavily protected and features a payload of up to 3t.

The Dingo 2 ambulance and emergency vehicle is used for treatment and transportation of contaminated personnel. It features state-of-the-art emergency equipment and ergonomic accommodation for three to four personnel.

The Dingo 2 NBC reconnaissance vehicle is a variant used to detect nuclear and chemical warfare agents. It features state-of-the-art sensors and equipment for reconnaissance.

A Dingo 2 variant for use in civilian and support roles is also available, and can be deployed in high-threat regions. Other variants include the Dingo 2 police vehicle.

The Dingo 2 APVC is powered by a single Daimler AG Mercedes-Benz Euro 3 six-cylinder liquid-cooled diesel engine. The power of the engine is 163kW

The RQ-7 Shadow unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is used by the United States Army, Marine Corps, Australian Army and Swedish Army for reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition and battle damage assessment. Launched from a trailer-mounted pneumatic catapult, it is recovered with the aid of arresting gear similar to jets on an aircraft carrier. Its gimbal-mounted, digitally stabilized, liquid nitrogen-cooled electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) camera relays video in real time via a C-band line-of-sight data link to the ground control station (GCS).

In the US, the Army's 2nd Battalion, 13th Aviation Regiment at Fort Huachuca, AZ, trains soldiers, Marines, and civilians in the operation and maintenance of the Shadow UAV.

Sorry, the progress has been a little late and sow going, I painted the interior with a light grey, which was then darkened with a tamiya royal blue. The interior was then given a very transparent layer of vma dark green, then details were painted with vmc sky grey and various blacks and greys, it was then given a mig dark brown wash, it was then drybrushed

Figure time, I used the trumpeter german isaf soldier set and if I'm honest, I will probably never use trumpeter figures again! The kit seemed good, with lots of detail but lots of kit bashing would be required, I used the trumpeter mg36 set, which was surprisingly good with lots of detail, options and even photo etch straps, which were actually very fiddley so they were seldom used. I also added bits from dragons 101st air bones set and some resin british tankers heads from the bodi.

The first problem that was very evident, none of the leg pieces actually fitted to the body and all required a great deal of filling, the next bit problem was the fact that a few of the figures appeared to have shrunken heads. They just looked too stupid so I used resin tankers that had berets on. The final bit problem was the pe straps that only had instructions on how to form straps hanging off the guns, so with great difficulty I formed one of a a guy who had it strung over his back. The last thing that I noticed was that there are 6 seats but only 5 figures, so after a while of looking at pictures, I took one of the us figures and did some to it, and I'll pos it in a few minutes

I have just built the drone and because it has crashed I removed halve the wing and cut off the front box so I could add detail the the black box and camera bays,

Using different amps of fuse wire I created the structural framing and added bits of the skin and excess wires coming of it

I worked on the base using layers of insulation foam that I then applied card to the side, I'm leaving it to dry, next ill cover the base with filler

Painting time, to start I painted the bottom of the dingo with life colour deep cockpit, the parts were then added to the chassis to make ease of painting

Prior to this build I bought a pack of mig ammo paints for modern German vehicle in Afghanistan, before I painted I did some experimenting and at first I disliked the paints, I eventually realised they need to be sprayed at quite high pressure to stop it coming out speckley. I also initially doubted the colours but after looking at the proper colours the sand and green were spot on, but the brown is slightly too pink and is in reality more of a red brown, but with weathering it will fix it

The first colour than I applied as a base was a dunkelgelb from vma

This was then covered in a highlighting/post shading fashion to created the effect of shading, even though this was lost during the camo

The brown was then applied but unfortunately was pink instead of brown, but it was too much of a problem that filters and pigments wouldn't sort out

The final layer was applied which was very fine and complicated as I was doing it freehand and needed some touch ups

The decals were added after details were painted black and other colours, as well as the glass being put on. I then placed all the elements on the base to get a rough idea of the composition, and I thinks that it's looking quite good

Dio construction, the base was covered with wood filler as well as wood effects, I then sprayed the base with a black rattle cans and white was added to the areas that would have sand

Afghanistan is in actual fact very mountainous and rocky unlike Iraq that is mostly sand and desert. To reflect this, I only applied sand on the areas that would be exposed or frequently used, such as the roads and the overturned ground that the drone has uncovered

I used Vallejo desert sand paste for this that was excellent, I also used this on the tyres, dingo and drone to build up more of a texture on the sand

Humbrol maskol was applied on the windscreen to replicated the areas that the wipers have cleaned

I began weathering with colours from and airbrush with very low low presure that gave a speckley effect with Browns and sand shades , that was also applied to the drone to give lots of different shades

At first I wasn't completely convinced by the sand so I added brown, yellows and even some pinks to even out the tones

To further weather the dingo I added mig dark wash to the recesses and using pigments and chalk powder I created dirt effects, this was also added to the base to blend the two in. The area that the drone has taken out was heavily weather with greys and blacks to replicate the smoke created. The rock were added starting with the big ones then the small ones were.


The drone was painted with lots of colours and blacks and greys were added via powders.
Once all the components of the dingo were added, I decide to pose it on the base with the drone and I then added the figure to see what they would look like

The figures needed to painted so I decided to get some inspiration, but it just appeared daunting, fortunately, the camo wasn't to have


The painting begun with airbrushed dunkelgelb

I then gave a dark umber wash

Using lighter sand colours, I made sure to keep the coats very thin and only add the very light colour to the top highlights

The camo was bone with a fine brush in a stippling motion, the brown was first added and then the brown, the same technique was used for the temperate body armour. The details were painted with Vallejo using a variety of techniques, including dry rushing on the guns and wet blending on the faces.


I think that is about time I call this one done
