Help with weathering

Post by Stefanovici »

Hi there fellows!
You see, I have been working on some models so far (as we all do), but the only things I've done were to glue and paint. Now they look pretty good, but also pretty... basic. So what I want to do is to make them look better through weathering, though I've never weathered any models, and I don't really even know the basics.
Now, could you please help me out? Like explain me how, redirect to any useful links, and also recommend me any necessary washes or filters. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Edit: I have a Panther and a T-34/76 which I hadn't shown yet, but I'd better weather them first and then put them in my portofolio.

There are so manu different methods and techniques its hard to say what to do, do you want to use oils, enamel washes, pigments, drybrushing, the list goes on. What i did was watch a whole bunch of youtube videos and start simple with just a wash to add depth and definition then gradually increased the amount of different steps i take.
John, whats on my bench? Usually a mess and a couple of different models a week.
My motto? I'm not lazy, just energy efficient.

Thanks for the answers! I hope I can buy some washes soon, so I can see for myself if it works. I will post some pictures with the edited models as soon as I can.

Start with Ultimate washes and Paul's tutorial first, then move on from there. Coen's guide is excellent, but the Ultimate washes are totally forgiving and can be washed off with water and done again if you don't like the results.

This covers everything from start to finish, but there's a lot of stuff just on weathering that may be helpful.

Thanks again for the answers, but I have one more question. I've chosen some products to start weathering some models, but I haven't ordered them yet, so first, could you please tell me if they are any good? Of course, I might've chosen others which are better, but in my country, you can consider yourself pretty lucky if you find this kind of stuff.

AK Interactive Dark Wash for Green;
Humbrol Enamel Wash Rust;
AK Interactive Blue for Panzer Grey Filter;

just remember " less is more ".......go easy and build the weathering up in stages, when you feel that you need to do just a wee bit more then thats the time to stop !!

The wash is kinda the same like the Mig, Ammo, Sin ones, enamel based, in most cases needs some thinning and a good sealing layer (varnish) before application. They do work very well. Haven't used the clay based ones (Ultimate) but it looks like they are a bit easier to use and most important, waterbased. So clean up in general will go smoother and reduced risk of ruining the paint job.

Same goes for the filters. But in my, novice, opinion they are a bit hit and miss, some are the right thickness, most aren't. The shades are tricky, all depends on your basecoat color. So be carefull when testing those, a lot of thin layers works best. But they are good products.

No experience with the humbrol washes.
Sven.
