Whic airbrush?

Post by Clifftop »

Hi folks,

That's it, which airbrush would you recommend?

Is this any good? http://www.hattons.co.uk/Search-Results ... Term=AB602

Thanks,

Cliff.

Hi Cliff,

That's the exact airbrush kit I started with in 2010, it was ok to get used to how airbrushing works.

The only stumbling block is that it's not quite good enough to do fine close up work (or maybe I wasn't good enough) it definitely set me off in the right direction which ended up with me upgrading to a Harder & Steenbeck Evolution which I got from www.air-craft.net

I still use the compressor for everything but the brush is just for doing clear coats.

Hope that helps
Chris

Hi Cliff

If you're new to spraying, a compressor and airbrush set is a good way to go. You'll get used to it and be able to try out priming, pre-shading, painting, sealing for decals and sealing for washes etc.

However, be prepared after a while for the need for something better. Specifically you may find yourself wanting something more precise for tight camouflage work.

I bought my first airbrush 9 months ago. Gravity feed dual action and I loved it. Its generic and it came with a compressor kit by an outfit called Fast Mover which I think specialises in spraying cars. It works a treat - provided I keep it clean. As for free hand camouflage (the holy grail for the sprayer), it is ok for tanks, see my Tiger II, where you have some licence with the shapes you're creating. I was happy overall but, hand on heart, the final shapes differ in many places to what I was trying to lay down! With a tank you can get away with it.

Now for where you have large areas with defined shapes and soft edges (RAF WW2 green/brown and green/grey as an example), I don't think I can trust it because the volume in the spray sometimes varies regardless of how careful I try to be with the trigger. A better airbrush will have better internal workings and design so will not bite you on the behind, so to speak, when you least want it to! :nena:

Some people will doubtless say, buy something decent now, don't waste your money. That's fine, whatever floats your boat. However, if you're like me, and are not confident you could hit the side of a barn with your new toy, then better not to spend too much cash first up.

Horses for courses and all that. If its gravity feed and dual action then I'm sure you'll have fun whatever you decide. There are some brilliant tutorials on this site for spraying techniques and I would heartily recommend them. My airbrush came with virtually no usage instructions. It was only the brilliance of the ISM stuff that enabled me to step into a whole new world of modelling.

Enjoy.

Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Personally i would avoid that.

My choice would be the harder steenbeck Ultra from here http://www.air-craft.net/acatalog/Harde ... ml#SID=145

This is my review of it (best airbrush for the money IMO)

And this compressor from eBay (don't bother with the supplied airbrushes they suck) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FoxHunter-AS- ... SwxH1UGATN

The link to the compressor that's on the ebay link Paul put has been very good for me so far but the supplied airbrush is a nightmare and you should just throw it away if you get it in my opinion.
