Looking for tips about attaching a...tip. Seriously, Hasegawa?

Post by Lysus »

So this:

Image

Its twin is part of the fuselage mold (which you can see with the two halves dry-fit above), and yet there it is, a free floating piece with no pin or channel to fit in. Just a smooth surface to smooth surface. It's a baffling design decision...

I'm planning on securing the fuselage piece to the desk after I glue it up and then attach this free floater (to keep the body steady). I'll probably rough up the joining surface a tad, as well. The part is pretty small, each square in that grid is 1" for reference, so I expect Fun With Tweezers™ and such.

I'm looking for a few tips or warnings if anyone has any, or has run into this before.

That looks the right shape to fly off tweezers and get monstered.

I may have misunderstood, but I think you are over thinking things. If it were me (looks like an f-15, which I've built before) just dab a little glue on there. Put the part on with a little pressure. Once the glue starts to bite, you can still adjust to the required position. Then leave to dry. I use TET mostly, and find that after a few seconds I can move on to the next step. HTH.

Overthinking is my curse. So you're suggesting to just free-hand it and adjust once the glue starts to go tacky (skip the surfacing)?

I would do this exactly the same way Chief has suggested. It isn't that complex, to be honest.

However, if you still want to make sure everything lines up, I would attach one or two strips of white styrene stock to the top and bottom surfaces on the main fuselage (make sure the ends are sticking out past the edge where you need to attach the small piece) and then it's just a matter of guiding that triangular small piece in. You can attach the stock styrene strips with tape or PVA glue so you don't have to clean up the main boom parts on the fuselage. It would be something like this:

Make sure than you also don't apply too much of the liquid glue on the small piece when you're pushing it in as the glue could - by capillary action - flow into the guides.

Hope that made sense.

As for picking it up I've always found a toothpick with a tiny spot of blue/white tack or similar on the end works perfectly for placing really tiny parts and is far less frustrating than it pinging out of the tweezers

Had some time at the bench this morning and I went with the "dab of TET, adjust, dab of TET to secure" method:

I'll have to look into that. I get the sense that the Ultimate stuff is pretty good all around (and not just because of its ties to ISM :D )
