Which Decal softener/setter ???????????

Post by MNO »

I know there are various kinds of softener and setting solutions on the market. I'm currently using micro sol and set.
It works great on fine or great quality decals such as the cartographer decals. But those pesky Japanese manufacturers decals can be a pain to get to lay with micro products. Seams there not stout enough.
So my question is???? What other brands would be recommended. My local store doesn't have any of the Mr. Setter but they do have an AK decal solution. A model master solution and one other brand that's in a short black and chrome labeled bottle. I forget the name. And of corse the microscale products.

After doing the trial and error thing with many of those decal solutions I found Walther's Solveset. Been using it for five or six years now (the same bottle too) without complaint. It beats all the others that I've tried hands down.

I have used most of the solutions mentioned and found they all work to some degree or another but it does seem to depend on the decals I'm using. My most acquisition is the Walthers Solvaset which works really well. I purchased mine here:-

Another one to consider is daco comes in three strengths to confuse you too. I would just get the strong version though.

Everyone seems to recommend solvaset, but I bought a bottle to use on thick tamyia decals after reading on here and elsewhere on the internet that its one of the strongest decal setters available and decals turn to jelly at the mere sight of the bottle. Don't know if I'm using it wrong but it doesn't seam to do anything, I have literally bathed decals in the stuff and it just evaporates having no effect on the decal at all.

I'm not sure what happened there, but it's never happened to any of the tamiya decals that I've used it on.
Thick, thin, old or new. It's even worked on Bandai's stickers.
It's why I'm still using it. It's the only one that hasn't pooched my decals...

Yet.
