Canopy Tinting

Post by Joesdad »

I could do with some help with canopy tinting. The F-16 (and a Lynx helicopter) I'm building does need it. I've had a go with thinned Tamiya smoke and some Vallejo transparent paint, but it's doesn't seem right, it's just...well....paint. It's obviously needs to dry clear which is the problem. I'm missing something, any ideas where to find it?

What F-16 is it? I've got a spare smoked canopy from my tamiya 1/48 f-16c if you want it. I've used thinned 'smoke' before and it looked OK. It was 1/72 though. I've often thought of tinting klear for this, but never got round to trying it. I do use tamiya clear green on some. Looks fine, could even put a little klear on it if it's not gloss enough?

Thanks Chiefy
I'm going to try again later with some Aqua Gloss and drop of smoke/transparent blue, I suppose I only need a drop?
Thanks for the offer Chief but my F-16 is the two seat version

I've seen adding a drop to Johnson's Future, and dip the clear part in that. Not tried it myself though. I've never seen anyone dip their canopy in Aqua Gloss or even spray it on.

Sounds like a good plan, I would only add a drop as you really want to tint the canopy, so thin is better. Good luck. I know it doesn't help your F-16 but Alclad do a Armoured Glass colour (green) that is brilliant.

Future with Tamiya acrylics as tinters work pretty well through an airbrush, but it needs to be mixed well just before application or it starts to look like Future with paint added....

The only issue I experienced was trying to get the colour mix & colour to Future ratio right - tiny bit of brown, tiny bit of yellow, huge bit of Future. Rather than ruin the canopy I used a sheet of clear acetate (from a chocolate box I think) to test on until I found something I was happy with.

Well........

Vallejo transparent blue (on the right) thinned with some Ultimate, light passes well,.....I say light, as long as it's an even coat it seems. When it dries its paint! You can't see though it, it's dull and yucky. Enter Alclad Aqua Gloss...: a couple of coats and as if be magic the canopy clears up like this...

Image

All right it's not brilliantly fantastic but it's a good start. Trouble is I've ran out of clear stuff to practice on....
